Canon's EOS R5, and it's siblings, can be powered and charged via the USB-C port. To accomplish this Canon sells an expensive power adapter, but you don't need it. Any USB-PD, or power delivery, compatible charger with sufficient specs can power the EOS R5.
This video is an update to my original video on the topic, Unfortunately, there were errors in the manual that lead to me providing incorrect information about what kind of charger or battery pack you needed. This video corrects that error.
TL;DR: To charge the batteries in your R5, you need a 15W or higher USB-C PD capable charger, I've used Apple's 18W USB-C iPad Pro charger for this. To actually power the camera, you need a 27W or higher capacity USB-C PD charger.
I'm currently using an Anker PowerPort III 65W 2-port charger (amzn.to/3ow7igd [affiliate link]) for this and this is the charger that's providing power in the sample clips in this video.

Fantastic information on a nuanced topic that is difficult to find information on. Thank you for taking the time and putting this out there. I've found the R5 to be incredibly picky with both chargers and cables, and it's been frustrating to say the least. This definitely sheds a bit of light on part of that.

You're very welcome! Between Canon's lack of information on USB-PD requirements for the camera, and the generally confusing confusing situation the USB Implementers Forum have created around the various standards, the whole situation of USB charging has become far more frustrating and confusing for the end user than it really should be.

Fantastic quality information. Taking your advice I bought an Anker power bank (537) with enough wattage to both power the R5 and recharge the battery. The latter only appears to happen if the power is off on the R5 but the Anker power bank works flawlessly connected via the USB-C cable provided with the Anker device. I can also charge my phone at the same time as it has 2 type C ports as well as a type A port. USB Port C1 delivers up to 45W, USB Port C2 delivers up to 20W all within the voltage and amperage needed. You were right about needing to leave the battery in even with modest charge for the USB power to work. I only use Canon original LP-E6NH batteries btw. Thank you for the detailed work you put in to this. 👍

I was on a remote livestream last week, for a political candidate. I have an Anker PD charger much like yours, but 30W. I was certain that I've powered the camera with it before, and I charge with it all the time. This time, the camera kept shutting off after a couple of minutes. Sparing the details, it became obvious that it was a USB power issue. Even after your marvelous explanation, I still don't know why. I wound up having to use an M50 that I had with me. When I'm recording via HDMI through an interface, I usually don't have the screen opened. This time I did. In theory the 30W charger should have been enough. But your video convinced me that at the very least I need to have a 65W charger or two in my remote kit. I really appreciate all the work and detail you put into this.

Thank you so much for this testing and explanation! 💚 Indeed with my own testing when off (and charging battery) the camera takes 5.0/5.1v and 5-8w of power. When powered on it uses 9v and 8w (up to 18w with 8K) of power. Have not been able to test long-term if and how much the battery depletes during recording using external usb pd power but it's unfortunate to hear that apparently it does lose some charge throughout.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 4 ай бұрын
Long term battery depletion is functionally irrelevant. It's not as minimal as the battery's own self discharge rate, which of course wouldn't be expected as the camera does use battery power to boot and establish the USB-PD connection. But I basically run my R5C, off USB-PD 99% of the time, running somewhere between 3 and 8 hours per week, and I really only top off my internal battery on a monthly basis, and even then I've never seen it below 50%.

Excellent video. Thank you! I have a question about the newer USB-C PD 3.1 power delivery standard. I believe this allows more power to be delivered, but can it deliver too much? Can I assume this is backwards compatible and any a device using this standard will work as well? Specifically, my new MacBook Pro has a 140W USB-C Power Adapter (with a removable USB-C plug) and I'd like to use this to charge batteries in my R5.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 2 жыл бұрын
USB-PD 3.x is completely backwards compatible with USB-PD v. 2, so you can use your MBP's charger to charge or power your camera. The beauty of USB-PD is that the devices has to tell the charger what voltage and power profile it requires. So a device like the R3/R5/R6 etc, tells the charger that it needs 27W at 9V (or 15W at 5V for charging), and if the charger can't provide that the camera simply doesn't accept power from the charge at all. As with all electrical things, the load (device) draws only the power it needs regardless of how much power the source (charger/battery) can provide. And all of this is why I actually really like USB-PD for this purpose. The entire protocol is designed to protect the devices and chargers from each other while still allowing open interoperability. Anything that is a certified USB-PD charger that meets the necessary power profiles, can safely charge any USB-PD device. My understanding is that USB-PD 3 is basically USB-PD 2 with 3 new voltage levels (28, 36, and 48 volts) which allow it to reach the higher powers (140, 180, and 240 watts respective) and a variable power supply mode where the device can precisely control the charging voltage and current.

Just had a weird experience charging r5 with grip and 2 hahnel batteries via usb c. One battery charged to 100 but the other battery never budged, until I swapped them round! Will pay a lot more attention to usb charging after this!
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Жыл бұрын
That's interesting, I haven't seen that before. It's possible that the battery that didn't charge wasn't making a good enough connection with the temp/control contacts that the camera was willing to charge it. By swapping them, you reseated it and it made a better connection. Li-Ion charging is not the simplest process and there are a lot of safeguards in the charge controllers (in and outside the batteries) to insure that everything goes correctly.

Yes I found that I cannot charge the battery with a USB-A to USB-C cable, I had to use a USB-C to USB-C cable whether connected to a USC-C port on a battery or mains adapter. I suspect the all USC-C cable uses a different negotiation or handshaking compared to USB-A to USC-C cable.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Жыл бұрын
That's correct. The camera uses USB-PD version 2.0 which is not supported on devices with the type-A connector. You have to use a type-c to type-c cable, and you have to use a PD compatible power source that supports 9 volt output.

Finally getting around to playing with timelapses and thinking about how to power the r5 while doing that. I thought about this video and found it very helpful to review. I didn’t even understand how the PD stuff works, so thanks for going over that bit. I have been looking at some Anker Powerbank devices and some of the newer ones seem very unclear (to me) if they even support PD at all! I have decided not to purchase any device that does not say PD in the description. Anker talks about this IQ think of theirs, but even on a $180 powerbank, I can’t quickly tell if it supports PD or not. It’s just stupid. So, it is not just Canon being flaky. I hope I’m wrong but it seems a lot of people are dicey on this topic, almost like they didn’t pay attention in circuits class. I’m going to order the Anker Powercore+ 26800 mAh PD 45 W with a 60W PD charger to rapid charge the power bank. I probably don’t really need that extra 60W PD charger but I can’t seem to find, on Amazon at least, something with just that powerbank alone. Sigh.

I'm trying to connect usb c to the R5. I'm using a V-mount battery mount that can supply 8v and 12v. I'm working with a company now to make the 8v DC5521 barrel to USB-C cable I'll need. My thought is to run a straight PD cable with no step down from the 8v power plug OR run a DC5525 barrel connector from the 12v and step it down either to 7.2v, 8v or 9v. OR, should I not worry about the step down and just feed the camera 12v and let the camera adjust the voltage? The USB-C power seems to be a very tricky issue and just want to get this right. Anyone have any suggestions?
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Жыл бұрын
USB-PD is not DC power with a USB-C connector on the end. So you can't just wire a DC plug to USB-C cable. You need the USB PD electronics in the cable. At a minimum, (at least this should be the case if Canon engineered the camera correctly) if the camera can't negotiate the the proper power profile from your source, it will not connect the high voltage pins internally and never actually draw power from the source. If your V-mount battery has D-tap outputs, get the Tether Tools D-tap to USB-C PD cable that I linked. It's properly implemented and is a certified USB device. If it doesn't get a mounting plate for it that has them. If you're hell bent on hacking something together, you should use a DC to USB-PD regulator, like this amzn.com/dp/B09D98799T. That one also supports 6-35V DC input and providing correctly regulated power on the USB-C port, so it wouldn't matter what voltage your fed it.

For wall-powering the R5 (and now the R5C) in a studio environment, is there any benefit to using USB-C power delivery versus using a dummy battery? Seems like that would be a simpler approach if you're just looking to power the camera unless I'm missing something. Cheers, thanks for the video.
@PointsInFocus

In a studio, and just for power. No I don't see any advatnage for USB-C. If you're tethering, it's unlikely that your computer, especially if it's a laptop, is going to be able to provide the power the camera needs, so it wouldn't actually work anyway. IMO, where the USB-C stuff really shines is in the field for people traveling. That way you can leverage your tablet/laptop charger or a USB-PD battery pack to recharge without having to carry extra chargers.

I don't use dummy batteries, though if I was going to go that route I'd want something with built in regulation and from a reputable vendor. That said, I can't make any specific recommendations since I don't use them. As for USB-C. If you want complete piece of mind, or at least to make it so Canon can't point fingers at anyone else. Canon has the PD-E1 USB-C PD adapter. Granted, I think it's over priced for what it is, but if it kills your camera, at least Canon can't say you weren't using an unsupported power supply. Personally, I use chargers from Anker or my Apple MacBook Pro charger. The 2 Anker chargers that I use are the 726 2 port 65W Nano II, and the single port 65W charger that came as part of the Anker 747 battery bank kit. And for a battery, I'm currently using Anker's 747 battery bank. That said, when it comes to batteries, there's an increasing number of Gold and V mount batteries that include USB-PD supplies that are capable of powering the R5 and R5C.

Very good video. I would like to know if you could recommend a power bank capable of sustaining an EOS R or EOS R5 for 12 hours of continuous shooting. I am not finding any that support 8.4V or 9V outputs, or that have a 27V output."
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus Ай бұрын
For 12 hours of continuous shooting, you're looking at a battery in the 200 watt-hour (Wh) range. The max draw from the R5C is 15W, times that by 12 hours and you end up with 180 Watt-hours. But you want a battery that's bigger than that so you don't have to rely on completely discharging it. Anything with that much capacity, that also supports USB-C and USB-PD, should have no problem meeting the R5/R5C's requirements. If you're using USB-PD, the only think you're looking or is 27 Watts (W) or 3 amps (A) at 9 volts (V); the camera requires that specific power profile to work. That said, one thing to be aware of is that batteries larger than 100 Wh are prohibited on airlines. Because of that, and the fact that I don't need to power huge lights off batteries, I don't own anything bigger than a 100Wh Anker USB power bank. So I can't make any specific recommendations from personal experience on that front. That said, I'd suggest taking a look at SmallRIg's VB212. Though I've never used one, so I can't speak from personal experience. Hope that helps.

First of all, I don't subscribe to many channels, but I did to yours. Excellent content. But you opened another can of worms. I saw you and another person talking about dummy batteries for the R5. I have an Anker PowerCore that provides PD, and I use it to charge my R5 all the time. But... since the specs (and my results) say that the battery continues to drain even when the camera is connected to USB PD, I just assumed that a dummy battery wouldn't be enough (dumb), and I never went looking for one. Is there a good, dependable, SAFE dummy battery for the R5? If there is, what is it powered by? Seems like USB PD wouldn't provide enough juice, as per the above. I am going to set up the PowerCore to power my R5 and send you the results. I also have an R3, so I might as well do the same with it for comparison.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 2 жыл бұрын
The safest option would be Canon's; either the whole AC-E6N power supply and coupler, or just the DR-E6 and your own 8V 3A power supply. Barring that, my only experience with a 3rd party dummy battery is the one Blind Spot Gear sells, and the dimensions on it aren't quite right. It works in most things that use LP-E6 batteries, but it doesn't fit and lock properly in the R5's battery grip.

@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 2 жыл бұрын
Samsung makes several USB PD chargers, so it would depend on the specific charger. If it's the 25W version, then it will only be sufficient to charge the battery when the camera is off. If it's the 45W version then it should be able to power the camera. You can always check the output specs, which should be printed on the charger somewhere. To charge the camera you need a charger that provides 3 amps or 15 watts at 5 volts (any 15W or higher USB PD charger should be able to support this). To power the camera you need a charger that provides 3 amps or 27 watts at 9 volts (an 27W or higher USB-PD charger should be capable of this). And of course, it has to be a USB-C charger that supports USB Power Deliver (USB-PD), which should be the case for anything from the last 2 or 3 years. If it's not compatible, the camera will not accept power from it.

Are you using Canon OEM LP-E6N or LP-E6NH batteries? Many 3rd party batteries won't report correctly to the camera and won't be charged. The other sticking point is that the charger must be a type-C USB-PD charger. You can't use a type-a charger with a A to C cable, even though it seems like that should work given the charge power requirements.

@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 6 ай бұрын
So far as I know this is incorrect. The R8 is specified by Canon to work with the same Canon PD-E1 power adapter as all of Canon's other EOS R cameras. This is a 27W USB-PD power supply that supports only 5 and 9 volt profiles (3A at either voltage).
@chrisrussellca

@@PointsInFocus i believe this applies to power banks and not via AC adapters. RF shooters mentions this and Canon also recommended the Anker PowerCore 26800 45W power bank. My 30W power bank with PD 3.0 certification would support power delivery to Canon R8.
@PointsInFocus
@PointsInFocus 6 ай бұрын
So far as I've read in the standard, no distinctions are made based on the source's underlying power supply (battery or AC). The port power rules always apply. If as source is ≥15 W, it's supposed to supply 9V power at wattage / 9 amps up to 3A. The only complicating factor in all of this, is that a multi-port source might be marketed on it's total available capacity while not actually supplying that to any given port. Which is misleading marketing on the part of the battery bank, not a higher requirement on the part of the camera. But again, this applies to AC adapters as much as it does to batteries.
