Pentatonix came together as a quintet in 2011, but the original trio of Mitch, Kirstie & Scott had been performing together since they were children. When they signed up to audition for The Sing Off, they found out they needed at least five members, so they brought in Avi (who shared a mutual friend with Scott) and Kevin (who they found on KZfaq). The record deal was part of the package they received when they won The Sing Off, but the record company (Epic, a Sony company) dropped them a week later primarily because they didn't know how to market an a cappella group and they believed a cappella music wouldn't sell. The group stuck together and started producing their own music on KZfaq videos. They developed a big following and about eight months after dropping them, Sony re-signed them to one of their smaller labels, Madison Gate. Pentatonix released three EPs over the next eighteen months. The third EP included Daft Punk Medley, which went super-viral and won a Grammy Award. Immediately afterward, Sony promoted them to the RCA label, their top company...and the rest is history. Avi left in September 2017. The group did a handful of projects as a quartet, then Matt joined full-time in March 2018 after being the "special guest" bass singer on their Christmas 2017 tour. Avi technically does not have a new band. He released one album with his side group Avriel & The Sequoias (NOT a cappella) while still with Pentatonix. That group disbanded soon after. He took a year away from the music business after leaving PTX, and has since started a solo career (also not a cappella), releasing two EP albums so far with a third about to be released. He put out the lead-off single for the new album a couple of weeks ago.

Perhaps the highest praise onr can given artist is to be speechless Regardless of what language you speak. Being speechless means there is no word that you know of that can even come close to describing what it is you have just heard and seen. And although you may not know the English word to describe How you were feeling your body language shows it all. you're awe, Amazement, respect, just being blown out of the water was written all over your face. Never be afraid to show your emotions. I watch reaction videos for a true and honest reaction and if that means You shed some tears or have to take a moment to collect yourself that is an honest reaction. And on a side note I've seen many reactors have to do just that when listening to Pentatonix. The role of an artist is to connect with the consumer on an emotional level. By having such a visceral reaction to their music means that it has gone straight to your soul and fed it. A soul that was starving for this but didn't even know it. If you haven't done hallelujah or amazing grace please put those on your list. Great reaction

Many people have been overwhelmed with the beauty of their voices. Not surprising. I've been a "Pentaholic" since 2012. It was "Somebody That I Used To Know". I was totally blown away. I've felt that way ever since. Enjoy!

When Avi (2011-2017) or Matt (2017-current). Is singing Scott takes up the bass. Avi left because his mom was sick. Then he started doing stuff on his own. He found Matt to replace him.

Avi Kaplan was the original bass from 2011 through most of 2017. He is unbelievably talented and my favorite. He left on good terms with the rest of the band and because of a family health issue and personal reasons. He also helped the band find his replacement Matt Sallee. Matt has been with the band ever since and Avi has a super solo career. They all still remain in touch. Avi and Kevin Olusola were roommates and are still great friends. Loved your reaction to their performance of Imagine. Its beautiful and the message is super powerful. Each of them is very different and backgrounds are very diverse but they are a family who love each other. And when they sing......wow, well they are heavenly. They won 3 Grammys while Avi was with them. Please watch Daft Punk(the first Grammy). I didn't see Hallelujah on your play list but I may have just missed it. I think you said you reacted to it. :)

Great reaction! Pentatonix has a way of getting us in the feels. I think it's their laid-bare presentation... just naked voices, emoting each word clearly, eyes looking straight into the camera, and the joy on their faces as they sing their hearts out. Some of my favourite videos are their laid back, one-take masterpieces like "Gold" and "Evolution of Michael Jackson."

Avi was the bass until 2017...He left for personal reasons and his mother's illness. It was amicable. He helped find Matt for the group. Avi also taught Kevin to sing. Kevin didn't know he could sing and Pentatonix convinced him he could. They are all strong, talented people.

a good introduction to Matt as the Bass replacement is "You're a Mean One . . Mr Grinch"

This is another of their classics and so incredibly moving. The harmonies in the song as well simply go far and away above everyone else who tries, which is why PTX is the world's best acapella group. My ancestors are from Sweden (near Odeshog) and believe you me, your English is outstanding whether or not it is your second language. It's not so much that you speak it well, it is that you speak it so naturally and idiomatically exactly as we native speakers do it. Wonderful!

One thing I find so funny about this video, is it makes Avi look so darn short - but he's five foot ELEVEN! The others are just SOOO taaaaalllllllll....

Well, there isn't really a lead singer in PTX. They all sing depending the song and arrangement.

Welcome to the rabbit hole! Most Pentatonix fans (known as Pentaholics) are also Home Free fans (known as Home Fries). I suggest you start with Ring of Fire (it features Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix), then End of the Road, then Mayday. These two acapella groups will help you grow your subs quickly. We seem to be a pretty tolerant group, allowing for some of the silly things reactors may say during a first time hearing. 99% of the time they "take it back" by the end of the next song! LOL :)

Avi left because he needed to be with his family as his mother was ill and he couldn't deal with that and the touring schedule at the time. He actually helped them find Matt, his successor.

they actually were awarded a record contract but were dropped after they all moved to LA within a couple months.

Touching reaction for a wonderful song. You could try their beautiful rendition of Can You Feel the Love Tonight, or Sound of Silence- some of the earlier ones with Matt. They have some original stuff out too- latest is Coffee in Bed. Their 90’s Dance Melody is a bop! Enjoy your journey.

You have so much to enjoy yet! "Daft Punk," absolutely! It won them their first Grammy. And I know you'll appreciate their interpretation of Tchaikovsky's "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," a piece with no lyrics sung by a group with no instruments. That one won them their second Grammy.

Not sure if someone already said this, but the words on the cards they passed were showing who they are, and when they passed the card the word was the connection they shared with the other member.

English is my first language and at times I'm not as eloquent as you are with your second language. You do well.

Us Pentaholics are die hard fans. We love watching reactors react for first time. 1st time on you page will have to see what other PTX you have reacted. I won't go through PTX facts as everyone does on all reactors pages. I will say if you haven't seen PTX sound of silence they made the song their own (as all songs) however it will be best rendition you have ever heard and yes better than disturbed version. If you want Matt to give you goose bumps watch his intro on your mean one Mr. Grinch

Avi's solo group was called Avriel and the sequioas but these days he goes by his own name Avi Kaplan. It's not a capella except partially for some of the songs which he's done some vocal layering

In order to come "down the Rabbit Hole" of PTX with all us Pentaholics, you might want to watch the video (without reacting to it) "The Beginner's Guide to Pentatonix". I think it will enhance your understanding and appreciation of this group as well as answer a lot of your questions. There are some spoilers, but I think it would be worth your time. Pentatonix is like family to us. We love them and they love us.

Great reaction. This is one of my favorite videos because of the message. You might add to your long list some of their original music. Two of my favorites are “Sing” and “Can’t Sleep Love”.

I'd personally suggest The Sound of Silence, Mad World and Havana, not just for Matt but also because they show off Scott's talents as well. Thanks for "eating your words" about Scott.
