PTX and Home Free were both season winners of a show called "The Sing Off" that ran for 5 seasons. The show's competitors were all a capella singing groups. PTX won season 3 and Home Free won season 4. The high tenor of Home Free, Austin Brown, is from Georgia; the bass Tim Foust, is from Texas, & I believe the baritone Adam Chance - who joined the group after the show - is from Alabama...so the three of them all have different "southern" accents. The other two members, Adam Rupp, beatboxer and tenor Rob Lundquist are both original members of the group and come from Minnesota. And, may I humbly say, they put on one AMAZING show! We saw them for our anniversary in 2015 and they blew me away! If you get the opportunity to see them, do NOT pass it up!

My favorite part of the record of this song.: They had Don come in first to record. Don asked Tim how they wanted him to sing the song. Tim's answer was, "You sing it how you want and we'll adapt to you."

There is no competition between PTX and Home Free. They are both masters at their craft. Avi Kaplin from Pentatonix sang with Home Free in Ring of Fire. You can easily appreciate both groups without comparing them. Their harmonies are impeccable and they work to support each other's voices. Home Free lends more to country and PTX more to pop, but they both are not afraid to venture into other genres. Sit back and enjoy the ride. As Alice sais, "One can never have enough rabbit holes to travel down".

You can not compare acapella groups. I love Home Free. They are a "country" base acapella group but they do all generations of music. I'm a country gal so I love this group. 😀. I do watch PTX too but prefer Home Free. That's me though. Hope you do more of home free please thanks.

50 years later and Don McLean still sounds amazing! This is one of the greatest songs of all time, and was VERY MUCH a part of my childhood. Don & Home Free really touched on some magic (as well as some feels) with this video! Home Free won The Sing Off the season after Pentatonix. PTX was somewhat involved in coaching them during the show, and former PTX bass singer Avi became VERY good friends with Home Free bass singer Tim Foust in the process. Avi has collaborated with Home Free on one song (Ring of Fire) and has also made cameo appearances in several of their videos. There's no real competition between the groups or their fans. Most Pentaholics are Home Fries as well (and vice versa). For a while, Home Free was considered a "country" version of PTX, but in reality, both groups record all genres of music.

This song was written by Don, released 50 years ago about events in music and the US going back 62 years ago. Many of us are PentaFries. It is all a capella. Don had the first lead, Chance (baritone) had the second lead, Austin (higher tenor) had the third, Rob (lower tenor) had the fourth, Tim (bass, very) had the fifth - he's the 'more southern' sounding guy, and yes he really was singing that high, and Don wrapped it up with that great slow finish. Adam just about killed himself doing so much 70's rock percussion. Great reaction. I liked the look on your face when you realized you had hit the jackpot. Yep, mostly southern and midwest-ish. Try Man Of Constant Sorrow for some pre- bluegrass. Ring Of Fire for some country-ish. Moonshine for some southern flavor. How Great Thou Art for gospel. Do You Hear What I Hear for Christmas. Country Roads for country pop. They even did a Sea Shanty medley. Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer is well, just silly. After you get familiar with them, then try Mayday. Whoops, forgot God Bless The USA and Castle On The Hill.

So happy you enjoyed Home Free with Don McLean. Home Free is as they say country based acapella group. It is amazing all that they sing. The first HF to sing was Adam Chance(Chance ) is from Alabama, the second HF is Austin Brown is from Georgia, Tim Foust is from Texas and is the one you commented about the southern voice. (just can't take the Texas out of a Texan.) all three of them are for sure southern, Rob Lundquist (the Beard) is from Minnesota same as Adam Rupp the beatboxer. In some of the songs you will see Chris Rupp (wears a cowboy hat or sometimes a cap) he is a baritone who was co founder of Home Free with his brother Adam Rupp. He left to go out on his own. Great group of guys here. Yes all of the acapella groups get along well. Thanks for a great reaction. edit: sorry I had incorrect information about Chris being instrumental getting Chance to join the group. I did delete that part, but wanted to put it out here for those who have already seen it. Thank you JadeSkye.

PTX are classical and pop. They won The Sing Off show in 2011. Home Free are country and trad, they won the next Sing Off. High tenor Austin Brown is from Georgia, Adam Chance, baritone is from Alabama. Tom Foust, deep bass is Texan. Rob Lundqvist, tenor, and Adam Rupp, the vocal percussionist are from Minneappolis.

Home Free is the real deal. Home Free won the NBC show the Sing Off in 2013 the year after Pentatonix won. They’re friends. Avi Kaplan has collaborated with Home Free on Ring of Fire. Don McLean heard of Home Free and wanted to do this remake with them. He sounded great for 75! I love the boxes - reminded me of shadow boxes you keep your memories in. Such a clever video. Yes, Adam Rupp, the beatboxer did a tremendous job. Some say he almost passed out doing this for so long. Haha. Home Free is a country “a cappella” band but they do so much more than country. They sing all genres and sing them well. Try Helplessly Hoping, How Great Thou Art, Country Roads, End of the Road to hear great harmonies. Don’t compare HF and PTX. They’re both good and both different. You won’t be disappointed by either group. Good reaction!

On Feb. 3, 1959, rock stars Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. Richardson were killed in a plane crash along with 21-year-old pilot Roger Peterson. This incident became known as “The Day The Music Died,” after Don McLean coined it in his 1971 song, “American Pie.” We had to there concert - the one they were flying to. It was so traumatic the music organizers quickly arranged a new concert with other big star groups. But it wasn’t until 1992 - when I took my sister to Buddy(musical in London) that she was able to say she had closer. Me - I was left deathly afraid of flying.

i read through some of the comments cause I didn't want to repeat the same thing for the 30th time but here goes... they are an acapella group from minnesota. Adam Rupp (Beat boxer) and his brother Chris formed Home Free in 2000. Chris left the band in 2016 and in came Adam Chance (Chance) who was the first guy that sang after Don (with the backwards baseball cap). He is their baritone. The second guy that sang from Home Free was Austin. He is their high tenor and you said he sounded southern. He's from Georgia but now lives in Nashville, TN. Rob is the member with glasses and he is also a tenor. Tim is the bass and he was the last HF member to sing. Although he is bass he has a 5 octive range. Tim is from Texas so when you said he sounded more southern you were pretty much right. As for PTX vs. HF. I personally prefer Home Free over PTX (although they are amazing). Home Free, although is a country acapella band, is very diverse and touches on everything from country, to pop and r&b. They are a fun group of guys who aren't afraid to sing about things that are serious and to help make people socially aware, to hilarious songs that make them goofy but still can't put out an amazing song no matter how much they are fooling around. PTX won the 3rd season of The sing off. Home Free won the 4th season of the sing off. Chance who came in the bang in 2016, his former acapella group, street corner symphony came in second on the sing off on season 2. also- sorry for the long comment!

HF has their own record label, Home Free Records, so you don't have to worry about copyright issues and pause their videos repeatedly. Just check who the producer is first and you won't have a problem. Their earlier stuff though is still copyrighted by Sony, so on those you will need to continue to pause. PTX and Home Free both appeared on a TV show called The Sing Off and PTX was the winner on Season 3 in 2012, and HF won Season 4 in 2013 and won a $100K recording contract as first prize. The Sing Off episodes are available to react too so you follow their journey on how they won. You might try their Johnny Cash cover of Ring of Fire, in which they featured PTX's former bass singer, Avi Kaplan to join them shortly after Sing Off appearance.

Home Free and PTX both groups became popular after an acapella show that pitted formed groups of acapella singers against one another, it had judges also and it ran for 5 seasons and PTX won in season 3, Home Free won in season 4. They do know one another and actually, the bass Avi that was originally in PTX sang with Home Free in their video "Ring Of Fire" and also appeared in another video of theirs. They can sing about any genre of songs, you can see in their videos that they do, but they call themselves the first acapella country group. They are just something different, and anyone can enjoy listening to them. They are also known for their amazing harmonies. So this is only my opinion. PTX is an amazing acapella group with amazing singers and otherworldly harmonies that are very adept at showcasing what acapella is capable of. Home Free is an amazing group that uses acapella to make music. It's a subtle difference but a difference none the less. What I love about HF is that they seem to have less turnover than the other groups and they really showcase their personalities through their songs, arrangements, and non song related content. They become another part of your family that you feel you could call any day of the week to help you out. I don't know another group of musicians that have managed that like Home Free. Don't get me wrong, I love listening to PTX but feel that they have found a formula and stick to it and do it very well. Home Free, to me, switches everything up more often and keeps things fun and interesting while producing some of the highest quality music you can find, acapella or not. I believe that over 75% of HF's songs, if they came on the radio, people would rock out to without ever knowing it was an acapella song.

First, I have just subscribed to your channel because I discovered you because of Home Free. I have been a fan since they won the Sing Off the season following Pentatonix (whom I also love, but am more partial to Home Free). They are the first official Country all Vocal Band. I can't speak for all groups, but many A Capella groups know each other through previous networking while finding their group. These guys are not only super talented, but they're really great guys who love good music, and like having fun (they love playing pranks on each other sometimes). They're very entertaining, funny, and down to earth. The first guy is Adam Chance (baritone, bass) and he's from southern Alabama. The second guy is Autin Brown and he is high tenor. He's from southern Georgia (you're right, he's from the south). The third guy is Rob Lundquist and he's 2nd tenor. He's from Minnesota. The fourth guy is Tim Foust, who is also from the south (southeastern Texas), and he's their main bass. The beatboxer extraordinaire is Adam Rupp who is also from Minnesota (he's the co-founder of the group. His older brother Chris is the brainchild of the group, but he left the group in May 2016 to pursue a solo career). Anyway, I hope you continue to react to these guys. I would like to suggest their cover of "Seven Bridges Road". These guys' harmonies are spectacular. The bass and percussion are also phenomenal.

Every time a song plays on the radio, the artist gets paid. KZfaq is not regulated by ASCAP, who oversees the whole payment thing, so every time a song is played on here, the artists are losing money. Subscription radio takes care of the issue by charging a fee to subscribers, which is how the artists get paid. The required breaks are designed so that the music can't be recorded, depriving the artists of their fair share. A pain, I know, but it's how the business works. That being said, enjoy this new discovery! They are fantastic!

New sub here, here to see you discover the Home Free rabbit hole!! There really is no need to compare the two groups as their styles are so very different. I love Home Free with every fiber of my being, I love their sound, their arrangements, their hearts and souls put on their sleeves, and I love the songs they do. I appreciate the talent of PTX as much as I appreciate the talent of HF, but I'm not a fan of their arrangements and while they all have incredible voices the voices of the guys in Home Free speak directly to my heart, while PTX doesn't. It's nothing against them, it's just the way it is. Home Free and PTX both won their separate seasons of the Sing Off, PTX season 3 in 2011 and HF season 4 in 2013. Loved your reaction, btw! Keep 'em coming. Where in the world are you located? I'm guessing maybe Sweden or Norway, but your English doesn't have a typical Scandi accent. :)

The beatboxer and founding member is Adam Rupp. Formed the group with his brother Chris in 2000. From Minnesota In order of solos after Don McLean: Adam Chance (just called Chance to avoid confusion). He's a baritone/bass, joined Home Free in 2016. From Alabama Austin Brown, high tenor. Joined in 2013. From Georgia. Rob Lundquist, tenor. Joined in 2008. From Minnesota. Tim Foust, bass. Insane range. Joined in 2012. From Texas. No they are not any part of PTX. But the a capella world is a tight knit one and the group members know each other and some are friends. There are many "southern" accents. Austin sounds different from Chance and he sounds different from Tim. Each can add more or less "accent" depending on the song.

As someone who has worked in broadcast radio for decades, American Pie means a bathroom break for all those poor DJs who are locked in an on-air studio for 5 hours at a time. 😂 But, honestly, this song is a sad one to me. The day the music died refers to a plane crash in 1959 that killed early rock and roll stars Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, and Ritchie Valens, ending the era of early rock and roll; this became the popular nickname for that crash. The theme of the song goes beyond mourning McLean's childhood music heroes, reflecting the deep cultural changes and profound disillusion and loss of innocence of his generation. It came out during the Vietnam War era when many Americans were disillusioned.

Welcome new Home Fry to the very deep and wonderful rabbit hole that is Home Free! These are my boys (I am from Minnesota, where the group began, and where Chris Rupp (the human drum kit) and Rob (The Bearded Wonder) are from). Their producer, Darren Rust (member of The Blenders), also lives here and is featured in their hilarious Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer video. They are a super fun group of guys (which you will soon find out), and they absolutely love their fans and reactors! They have put out so many amazing videos in the last year and a half, even though they were all spread across the US. Some of my favorite "Quarantine edition" ones are Down at the Honkytonk, Moonshine, Sunday Best, Meet in the Middle, and of course Quarantine. Their videos are put together so well and can have a lot of little details that can be easy to miss, so be sure to keep your eyes on the screen when watching! There are so many reactors that look away during the videos or close their eyes and miss things. A couple more of my favorites: In the Blood, Catch Me if You Can, Mayday (but make sure you wait a bit and really know the group better before you do this one, it will make it so much better!), Blue Ain't Your Color, Country Fried Pop Medley, God Bless the U.S.A. (featuring Lee Greenwood and The United States Air Force Band), Dive bar Saints, and End of the Road. I could go on and on, but you will have plenty of recommendations to keep you busy for a while!

I call Pentatonix a rabbit hole. I call Home Free a squirrel's nest because it is full of nuts. Adam Chance, first singer is from Alabama. Second, Austin Brown, from Georgia. The third one, Rob Lundquist, is from Minnesota as is the world champion human sound machine and vocal percussionist, Adam Rupp. Last but never least with a 5 octave range is speaker-blower Tim Foust from Texas. I am unable to choose between PTX and HF because I love music and theirs is unbeatable. You will find that there is comedy included in many HF videos and some of their outtake videos are hilarious. I have never heard a bad song from either. The members also have their own stuff same as PTX. And another artist with his own channel is Geoff Castellucci with a 6 octave range -- check out 16 Tons, Country Roads, and Blackbird. HF - Man of Constant Sorrow, End of the Road, When a Man Loves a Woman, It's In the Blood, Blue Ain't Your Color, Travelin' Soldier, Butts Remix, Honey, I'm Good, It's All About the Bass, God Bless the USA with Lee Greenwood and the Air Force Band, Elvira with the Oakridge Boys, Folsom Prison, and Mayday (only after you have done many more). There are so many more but I am tired of writin' and you're tired of readin'!

And Recky, I get what you mean about watching people around you (and you, yourself) age. I am 63. You are just a young man in my eyes. Remember that age is only relative. We mark the passing of time with years, but it really, truly it is that you are only as old as you feel. In my case, my body feels like 90 (!) but inside my mind I am still 25! I love that you are young, yet have enough years behind you that you can appreciate a lot of the music of my generation, and even further behind that. That is why I love your KZfaq channel here, and many others like it. It makes me so happy that you are working to keep that music relevant to today. We had a ton of great music back in our day - like American Pie. And music of that time really did set the stage for the music of today, just as the jazz and big band music of my parent's generation influenced my generation of music. So it's all relative! Great job!
