It's something how deep insecurities, hard drinking and smoking can prematurely age you ... David Janssen channeled his personal vulnerability into his performances and that jumped off the screen. I'll never stop being captivated by him.

Couldn't have said it better - and they yanked the show after only two seasons, even though it was besting the other shows it was up against in the ratings. I read that Jansen took it hard. He knew he had a great role. This was on a different level than other detective shows. His pain, decency, complexity cut a lot deeper than other characters. GREAT show. Can't wait to get the DVD's of both seasons.

David Janssen was probably the most "underrated" actor in the history of film and television! He had that natural gift as to appear that he wasn't acting at all. Robert Mitchum had the same gift.

I remember watching this series when it was on ABC tv in its final season, 1976, and in reruns for years after. I was only seven years old then, but the series made quite an impression on me. Seeing Harry O again on DVD, probably 30 plus years since it was last in reruns, as a 43 year old adult, I can now understand why the show made such a lasting impression: David Jansen. His portrayal of Harry is a mix of cynicism, world weariness, decency. Even pathos. This was a great tv show.

This series is Priceless for anyone on passionate/often acrimonious terms with the mid-70s! The show mixed with fixed organization with counter culture, and just breathed. Thank you for a video with all 3 themes, and inspired portraits of Janssen, Darrow and Zerbe. Of course, the 1st season theme is the best, as explained by many: Harry was wrecked, coming alive again, and embracing uncertain freestyle living, after decades in structured law enforcement/possible military...It's the defining theme. Third season theme is great...even though Harry was mandated to be a 'Healthy' action P.I...the stories still held his essence, and great cast. I LOVE 2nd season theme (hard choice)! It steps out, it's bold...and blends naturally with the 'Loss of Manny', Harry reigniting, and classic new/rocky friendship with Lt Trench; I wish the series could have been bold enough to blend all 3 characters. As a new question: Could 'Harry O' as a series, be reinvented and broadcast in this era, and still retain the heart, soul and feeling, it had back in it's Day?
@scvandy3129

I'm surprised that in one year no one's answered your question. Okay, here goes: "Not a chance." Sadly, we'll just have to be content with the 44 hours. Spring 1976, Janssen, and much of Hollywood, thought a renewal for another 22 was a lock, but network programmer Fred Silverman came into ABC and pulled the rug out from under him, co-stars, staff, crew -- and fans -- giving "Harry O" 'the hook', i.e., cancelled it. Janssen, reportedly, took it hard, having invested so much of himself into plus liking it and his cast and crew -- similar to Burt Reynolds' reaction to "Dan August" getting cancelled by ABC five years prior. And not unlike other detective shows the following season, 1976 - 77, Karl Malden's "The Streets of San Francisco" and Robert Stack's "Most Wanted", the latter which ranked in Nielsen's Top Ten in April 1977.

Amazon finally has both seasons of Harry O on DVD. They are both fairly expensive but worth having if you're a fan. Amazon states that both seasons are manufactured on demand aka they put them on DVD-R discs so not sure about the quality of the episodes themselves. I ordered the second season of Superboy and it was stated that was manufactured on demand as well. I will wait and see how well those turn out before getting these sets.

"We are VERY close on HARRY O. We just have to clear music for a few episodes, and we are waiting for costs on that. Everything else is in place, so if the costs aren't prohibitive, it's likely that we'll be bringing you HARRY O next year...and the first pilot telefilm, too. This is a 'front burner' item. :)".

Glad to see Season One is now available on Amazon. Wish it was a technically legit release as it's a on demand release now (hence why the set is pretty expensive) but it's better than nothing. I just hope Season Two gets a release as well. I hate it when a show only gets one season released and that's it due to crappy sales. That happened with Superboy and a few other shows I liked.

This is a superb collection of classic crime themes. However, I need to clarify a correction on Track 13... that is not the theme to "Harry O". Instead, that is the theme to a short-lived crime show called "Griff", which aired in 1973. Comment |

Yes, S2 theme's okay but the original version from S1's still the best. It's coming soon via Warner's archive, Amazon will carry it later. -Preferably it'd be on real DVD (kitsch like Logan's Run can but superb drama like this can't?), guess it'll have to do for now. Latest Warner messages; "We're working on Season One of HARRY O right now. Hopefully we should have it ready in the next few months. Season Two will follow shortly thereafter". & "Harry will be here sooner than later, do not fear!".

Interesting how each theme seems to reflect a certain flavor of what was 'in' for that time. S1's theme does have - as someone mentioned before - a jazzy, smoky, kind of melancholy feel to it. S2 - my personal favorite - reflects the changing of the times, just as the series did with Harry's character. S3's sound is too bombastic...it sounds kind of forced, like they were trying to wring the last good stuff out of the series.

The series only lasted two seasons ('74-76)--and, unfortunately, the themes in this posting are out of order. (The first theme here is indeed the one for the San Diego/Quinlan episodes; however, the version for the L.A./Trench episodes at the end of Season 1 is the final one here. The final arrangement--for Season 2--is in the middle.) That said, you're absolutely right about the arrangements' change in tone as the series progressed. And, I wouldn't be surprised if the one for late Season 1 was done hurriedly; the opening during that period (with the zooming O's) does come across as a stopgap measure.

Okay, it's been well over a decade since "reclaimerReclaimer" offered the three variations of Billy Goldenberg's "Harry O" themes and just shy of 120 Comments voicing their favorite(s). Such a disappointing figure. So, speaking of three, and speaking of faves, viewers were treated to three enchanting young women Harry (David Janssen) slept with (in typical, true-to-form, American television / movie fashion, each young woman young enough to be his daughter) and, AND, AND -- appeared more than once as the same character. Do you suppose a "who's your favorite, please, '1' . . . '2' . . . or '3'?" will garner more than a hundred Comments in a decade's time? (I hope "Harry O," Billy Goldenberg, David Janssen fans will continue to find this page and vote; share their preferences!) While these three actresses' and characters' names and corresponding images are seared into the brains (hearts for some) of die hard "Harry O" fans and / or true admirers of the female form, here's a refresher, a cheat sheet, if you will -- or, for the newbies, introductions: 1) 'Betsy' (Kathrine Baumann), 3 episodes (note unique spelling of her first and last name). 2) ''Gina' (Barbara Leigh), 2 eps. 3) 'Sue' (Farrah Fawcett) 8 eps. (billed then as Farrah Fawcett-Majors, reflecting her marriage at the time to Lee Majors). Of the three themes played here, out of order, I prefer the one heard in the middle position which was in fact the third version used. One of the additional pluses of the "Harry O" main title was the freeze frames and names provided of each guest star, a practice that served Janssen's "The Fugitive" producer Quinn Martin so well with all his one-hour dramas. Another was the extended play beyond the usual 30 - 35 seconds for the End Credits' version. Much to our displeasure / grievance, End Titles are usually compromised by voice overs promoting other programming, or eliminated entirely with the abominable practice of "squeezing" the credits to the bottom of the screen. So, having the Warner Archive DVDs, admittedly pricey, is a true treat. Now, back to the fun-to-discuss / debate subject of the three actresses playing Harry's lady friends in Santa Monica / Malibu -- Farrah Fawcett / 'Sue,' Barbara Leigh / 'Gina' and Kathrine Baumann / 'Betsy' post the San Diego, early episodes where there were none recurring -- Kathrine Baumann wins my vote. Plus, Janssen and she had some fun with the scripted dialogue pertaining to Betsy's (unseen) big-as-a-moose, football player boyfriend, Walter. "Thank You," composer Billy Goldenberg for this perfect theme that perfectly accompanies the visuals. And, for another personal favorite, "Alias Smith and Jones". I could listen to both "on a loop." "Thanks too" to "ReclaimerReclaimer" for your assemblage.

@TheTVisions
@TheTVisions 6 жыл бұрын
Well, he did play a Janssen role already in The Fugitive and is probably too old now. Janssen was in his 40s here but looked older, Ford is in his 70s now. It'd have to be some weathered actor for sure, can't think of many suitables among today's Hollywood guys though. Maybe Russell Crowe, Vince Vaughn, Mark Ruffalo, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Matthew McConaughey or George Clooney.
@billylake08
@billylake08 6 жыл бұрын
Ford was great, but the movie project version opened and closed the story, in a single 90's style work. From 60s, onward, Janssen had a rougher, introspective charisma...good, even fair roles, just worked for him. TVisions is right about older screen artists who could manage the spirit of the show, even though, not a series. It'd probably have to be a performer working 90s until now, known from features and much television. At a Loss..! For new millennium tough, and dry humored: Ehh...Kiefer Sutherland, Matt Dillon, Josh Holloway, Thomas Jane (constant motion). Truth is though...We're eras later, and Harry Orwell may be a person of color or culture, man or woman. The only rule is that they look, and act like Bogart to Janssen...and a 40s-60s Establishment person, rebelling (and struggling with it, and all the revolutions, of a daily changing world...)...They must of course, be a member of the American (Insert Today's Choice Here!)...Political Party! (This is one of many reasons, Harry Orwell, retired from law enforcement in the earlier 70s)...and began to rebuild the wrecked, personal motor and sailed craft, "The Answer"!

@@suzannewillis817 Completely agree; thinking of Emmy winner Anthony Zerbe as Trench and Paul Tulley as Roberts. (Oh, the fun Zerbe and sometimes Janssen must have had calling out "Roberts!" now and then.)
