I would think olive oil might turn rancid. I use neatsfoot oil.

@mickthepope I'm sure those would work, but KnivesPlus recommend olive oil, so that's what I use. In a pinch I highly doubt it matters though. :)

Can I use olive oil instead of mineral oil to load my strop for the first time set up
@jayc31106 жыл бұрын
Good information, and well made crisp videos... Thank you. Some questions for you: -- Will the olive oil dabs which you demonstrate in this video work to recondition any loaded leather strop?... And have you tried it on other strops besides the "Knives Plus" strop block? - Do you use any wood carving knives and tools? - Have you ever used "Flexcut Gold" stropping compound? (Flexcut products are mainly used for wood carving knives}.... Again thank you for your efforts and these video demonstrations.

@mickthepope As far as WD40 goes, keep that stuff FAR away from a leather strop. It will clean the strop fairly well, but since it is a petroleum distillate it will also deteriorate the leather. :)

Nice, I actually need to do this. Mine is loaded with steel.

I just got this puppy. I got some mineral oil for it. I also have EVOO in the kitchen. I got the mineral oil bc i didnt want to have something rancid on it but apprently mineral oil has an expiration date aswell. I havent used it yet as im waiting for my UF rods for my SM. Any thoughts guys, knives plus says to only use EVOO, but do they even have a warrenty?

Can someone post a link to the strop he recommends please and thanks
@barrygolden9823 Жыл бұрын
It is from "Knives Plus" in Texas. A quick Google search will bring it up.

Mineral oil or vegetable oil is also good. These oils will not go rancid on your strop like Olive oil will. I've also heard of WD40 being used for the same purpose. Thanks for the viddie.

Have you noticed the $$$$ of any Olive Oil Lately.? Even @ Wally World.? It is expensive.?
@glytch59 жыл бұрын
shit i knew i should not have done this. my strop got very dark where i did this. I asked knivesplus a while back about if the strop gets dry or if there is anything I should do with it, they just said make sure you knives are clean but other than that its a hands off strop, and that they have been using one for 10 years without an issue. CRAP! got to buy a new one I guess. Does it have to be extra virgin? Knives plus did not say that.

I know I sound like an idiot because everyone else seems to have good luck with this strop, but mine came so dry that when I put olive oil on and rub it in lightly the thing is BONE dry within a minute again...
@jdavis8827 жыл бұрын
Thomas Gasho no that's normal man I promise. Mine are also so dry that it almost looks like green dust would fly off of them when you strop. They still work great in that condition, they don't need to be moist looking. I really just use the olive oil to get down to new compound when the strop loads up a little. Use it for a while with light pressure and let me know what you think!
@khleatherworks45257 жыл бұрын
I think I had ended up putting too much oil on mine. I sent it back and they sent me a new one that seems to work great. I'll take your advice next time!

jdavis , these come from knives plus in a baggie . I have always stored mine back in that when I get done using it . Is that ok or is it better to leave it out ? Thanks .

Use Alcohol & a tooth Brush.? Soak it with the Alcohol, Scrub it & use a Scraper to scrape off the Old Compound,? Alcohol, Will not harm the leather etc.?
@samurai16512 жыл бұрын
How would you recondition a normal strop? By normal I mean a strop that isn't saturated with compound. Also, when are you going to upload some sharpening vids? I miss watching you sharpen! lol
