Doug Polk Poker

Күн бұрын

Last night's high stakes poker cash game featured some all-time fan favorites like Phil Ivey, Tom Dwan (aka Durrrr), Dan Cates (aka Jungleman) and Patrik Antonius. However, it was Jason Koon and Kane Kalas that stole the show, battling it out for the largest pot in TV poker history. What a time to be alive.

Poker Hands is the show where Doug analyzes live poker hands from tv poker shows such as Poker After Dark, EPT (European Poker Tour), High Stakes Poker, the World Series of Poker (WSOP), the Aussie Millions, WPT (World Poker Tour) the Big One For One Drop, and the PCA (Pokerstars Carribean Adventure). He especially enjoys reviewing hands by popular high stakes pros like Viktor "Isildur" Blom, Fedor Holz, Dan Cates (Jungleman), Tom "Durrrr" Dwan, Phil Hellmuth, Phil Ivey, and Daniel Negreanu.

When you have a person that can lose the value of 6 good houses in 5 minutes it's just something they cannot relate to.

I dont know why Polk didn't put any AK in Kalis's range on the river. The turn bet was tiny and I think AK probably peels it again. Feels like AQ is a check to me. I agree with you that JJ-KK get folded alot since its the worst river in the deck.
@JiveDadson
@JiveDadson 5 жыл бұрын
I would never play AQ that strong on any street. But then, it would bother me a little to lose a million dollars on a one pair hand. I guess that's why I'm not a pro.
@NikhilAutar
@NikhilAutar 5 жыл бұрын
I agree in most senses. You could still extract value from kk from a shove, and maybe some qq (I could see jj bluffing this river in koon's shoes to fold out qq/kk type holdings kalis could have). But given the small bet sizing otf and the turn, ak could definitely be in his range, as could aq, and this plus 3 combos of 1010 is enough to put me off betting a third street for sure now I think about it.
@sauce0609
@sauce0609 5 жыл бұрын
I'm going to take dougs word for it and say he has no AK and no AA on the river. So he can't even get AK to fold. 99, JJ-KK just check behind because it's the worst card in the deck right? If Koon only has AA, KK and some Ax bluffs he beats all of Kalas's range other than 10's. I'm probably completely wrong, but I don't understand how it's not a check 100% of the time.

@chaosblood88 4 жыл бұрын
@@Cream147player but floating AK on the flop and turn (despite the reasonable price) seems like a weird line? might make AK unlikely by the river. The only hand which you put in a tough spot is kk which will likely re-raise pre. Anything below other than 10/10 will fold to a shove unless there is specific read so you don't get value from anything. It's either your ahead anyway and you're unlikely to get paid, or your behind. Anything less than an all in is exploitable so its either check or shove. I guess you could argue either is reasonable?

How do you not mention the issue of what Koon expects to get value from? I know he’s not going to be able to have many bluffs if his only value hand is AA, but what bluffs is he going to show up with on the river here when he 5-BET in position pre??? He’s only ever getting called by TT or the slow played aces. It’s a check back on the river
@Johnny-cz2wv
@Johnny-cz2wv 6 жыл бұрын
David Zimmermann it’s only a 4bet pre so it’s easy to think of enough bluffs, j8s etc. Only hand AQ is losing to is 3 combo’s TT and maybe .4 AA. Still a fine valuebet if let’s say 15 99/jj/qq/kk call turn and 25% hero river

@@AppalachianLiberty It's a punt at low stakes...you notice Koon as setting up for the river jam on ANY river. Which means, if he had a hand like 89s, he was going to jam the Ace as well... Which also means that a hand like QQ or KK will hero call a % of the time. How often is opponent 4 betting AQ/Ak and betting half pot, then small on turn with ace high? And for Koon with his opponent 3 betting out of the blind he's eliminated all sets except Tens and they're most likely flatting the other small pairs. And he's not calling 2 streets with AK. Therefore, he's only losing to slow played AA or TT exactly. When a range is that limited, there's value to be made by jamming river.
@AppalachianLiberty
@AppalachianLiberty 5 жыл бұрын
Craig Gray koon doesnt 4bet with 89s there preflop. So he doesnt have that bluff. So hes not getting hero’d. You need ace blocker to 4bet bluff. Go ahead and 4bet 89s and see how that goes

honestly what is gonna calling range of kayne in that spot on river. Koon's bluffs are mainly AK AQ heavy flop and turn, and get there on river. So, KK QQ JJ should check back and get to safe showdown cheaply, losing time to time TT set, and down bet w/ AA AK since koon doesn't really have that much bluffs, and also if he got jammed on river, he should fold AQ and some of AK.

I am new to poker and have a question about the hand. It seemed to me that Jason was repping pocket aces through pocket queens the whole way. The snap call from kalas seemed a little too hasty to me, as Jason could’ve easily had the pocket aces. How was he so sure he didn’t have them?

If you can't fold (too much equity), and you can't raise (because he's all in) there's nothing to think about. I guess your question really is 'why can't he ever fold here?'. The answer to that is because the pot is offering him like 3-1 and he beats way more than 1/4 of his opponents possible holdings here. Take your thought process where opponent is repping qq, kk and aa. Hero is beating 2/3rds of opponents range which means he only need 2-1 odds to break even, but he's getting 3-1 in this specific scenario you created so it's an easy call. More importantly your assessment of opponents range being aa,kk,qq is far too limited. He could also easily have jj, AK and AQ which means the odds are more like at least 5-1 in hero's favor, making it an impossible fold. You can't ever fold here even if he shows you one of his cards is an ace. He could have AK, AQ, or AA and obviously not all of those outcomes are equally as likely since there's an A on the board. Which means you still only need 2-1 to break even and he's being offered around 3-1. This might all seem complex to a new player and you might wonder how he could calculate all that so quickly, but after so many hands some of it will be unconscious. Any experienced player (good or bad) would never have to think twice about making this call.

Hello, can someone please explain that all in. It seems like a terrible move? He was in position to just check it down and take the pot if his ace was good. What hands are going to call that he has beat? The only thing I can think of is he had a read on him like KK, QQ, JJ and trying to pretend he was bluffing and hoping for a hero call? Even then it seems like a pretty poor move. Btw I am a poker newbie, just my thoughts.

Range/Combo Question: When you're thinking about removal/combos when sitting with a hand like AQ, how much do you let that influence your decision that an opponent is less likely to have AA, AK, QQ? It seems Dominated hands like this come up constantly, so I've been really confused how to apply reduced available combos. It seems that when I think he's less likely to have aces, because I have a blocker, he usually does.

Josh Foss it seems that way because of your flawed perspective (putting too much emphasis on the rare ax aa showdown). The actual stats are there tho
@joshfoss7407
@joshfoss7407 6 жыл бұрын
johan van til it's actually not rare at all. Whenever someone mentions blockers they fail to mention what holdings someone is likely to be acting that strong with. I see things like ”an Ace came off on the turn, so he's less likely to have AA” if you bet and he comes over there top are you really thinking he's less likely to have AA? Maybe ”mathematically", but Experience says he's more likely, because his behavior points to it.

OK I know it's late but nobody has answered this correctly yet I think. Here's how the math works (god, I hope I'm not wrong about this!): 839,000 in the middle, let's make it 840k for friendlier numbers - then each player put up 420k into the pot. Let's put Kalas range as 99, TT, JJ - pretty much the only one that makes sense whatsoever; seldomly AA but let's be very generous to him and say he always plays AA like this. Now when he folds, the outcome of the hand for him is -420k that he put into the pot; when he wins, he wins 420k+504k that Koon adds with the river bet, meaning 924k - again, simplify that to 920k. (still with me? good!) Now how much does he fold? TT is 3 combos, 99 and JJ are 6 each, AA has 1 combo left. So he folds 12 combos out of a total 16 (at best!), meaning 3/4 or 75% of the time. When he folds he loses 420k, so out of 4 times he will lose 1,320,000 or 1 million 320k. When he wins it's 920k, which happens one time out of four. So four times this spot happens he will lose 400k on average. In order to prevent that, he needs to call 60% of the time (because Koon's bluff needs to work 40% as he bet 2/3 pot) - that means 9.6/16 combos. TT and AA ARE 4 so he needs to find 5.6 combos from JJ-99 - almost all JJ combos are enough. That, in turn, makes it a profitable value bet for AQ. Besides, if Kalas only called TT/AA here, Koon would only bet AA and own him so probably both know Kalas needs to call more.

Here is why Jason Koon has to bet with AQ on the river. Preflop Ranges: - Koon = JJ+, AK+, AQ (some of them), A5s, A4s, KQ (some of them) - Kane = 88+, J10s+, ATs, AJs, AQs, AKo Flop (263k) : 5d 3h 6s By betting half pot, Koon is giving Kane 3 to 1 to call, which means that he has to bluff 25% of the time when he c-bets. Obviously, his value range is JJ, QQ, KK and AA (24 combos). So he has to find 8 bluff combos to be balance. But since his bluff has equity (AQ and A4s can improve on later streets), he can bet like 10 AQ combos 4 A4s combos. From Kane side, the situation is this. He is supposed to defend 66% of his range here. 88+ = 42 combos JTs+ = 16 combos ATs, AJs, AQs, AKo = 24 combos Total: 82 combos So he has to defend 54 combos : 88+ = 42 combos And 12 combos with, for example, back door flush draws: - ATdd, AThh, ATss - AJdd, AJhh, AJss - AQdd, AQhh, AQss - AKdd, AKhh, AKss Turn (519k) : Tc Koon bets 160k (0,3x pot), which means he is supposed to bluff only 20% of the time when he bets, because he gives great odds for Kane to call. The value range of Koon here is still JJ+, so 24 combos. He should have only 6 bluff combos, but with the equity of his bluffs, let's say 8 AQ combos 4 A4s combos. Kane has to call 77% of his range giving the pot odds. It's 42 combos. - 88+ = 39 combos (there are only 3 TT combos now) - ATs = 3 combos Total = 42 combos. River (839k) = Ad So now, Koon goes all-in for 707k. It's, 0,84x the size of the pot. It gives him the opportunity to bluff 32% of the time when he bets. On the other hand, Kane must call 55% of his range, which is kind of wide at that point. It's extremely important, because it means that Kane has to call 23 combos: - TT = 3 combos - ATs = 2 combos (ATdd isn't possible anymore - AA = 3 combos - KK = 6 combos - QQ = 6 combos - and some JJ as well (3 combos from a theorical standpoint) So we can see here that the AQ combos of Koon are a clear value bet since they beat KK, QQ, JJ (that has to call) and block AA and ATs (so 2 combos of aces, and 1 combo of AT). Conclusion : the board is absolutely perfect for Koon range. He should value: - AA = 3 combos - AQo = 8 combos Bluffs: - A4s = 4 combos - JJ = (some of them) Checks: - KK - QQ - JJ (some of them)

I really like this comment. What about AK though? And do you think QQ could escape from that hand, at least some % of the time?
@arthurgoisset3496
@arthurgoisset3496 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, Firstable, there is one big blunder in my comment. A4s is never a bluff on the river. It should be checked back. Which means you have to bluff with all your jacks. KK also has showdown value. If Koon checks it back, he wins against JJ and QQ (9 combos), he splits against KK (1 combo) and he loses against AA, TT and AT (8 combos). So it's a break even check. Besides, we can suppose that Kane doesn't call 100% of his Aces preflop, so Koon will only lose here against 6/7 combos. Finally, checking back QQ means giving up. The thing is Koon can't bluff these hands because he doesn't have enough value combos to be balance. So as far as GTO is concerned, he has to give up some hands. Of course if he noticed that Kane's calling range was too tight on the river (for example if he folds KK, QQ and JJ), he can start bluffing QQ. It will be very profitable. As far as AKo are concerned, I just simplified Koon' range on the flop by saying that he bluffed with 10 combos of AQ and 4 combos of A4s. The thing is, in my opinion, Koon doesn't 5-bet that much with AK. But let's assume he does. He could have for example 5 combos of AKo, 5 combos of AQo and 4 combos of A4s. Actually, it's not that different to have AK or AQ in this situation. You're either ahead or behind because the only Ax type of hands that Kane has in his range is ATs.

@Mad1Lee 6 жыл бұрын
You are way off in your breakdown. First of all, Kane is out of position in a 4b pot. He does not have a lot of those combos on the flop and on the turn like you have mentioned, like a lot of the times he is just flatting hands like 88-99 pre or ATs/AJs and especially JTs pre-flop. Then you can cut those combos AGAIN once he calls a 4bet out of position. He should fold a lot of his 88/99 right there as well as hands that have Tx in them. Maybe leave 1 combo of ATs some % of the time and one or couple of combos of 88-99. Then we get to the flop. There is absolutely no way in hell he is check calling ATs on the flop there versus half-pot bet. It's a losing play for him, even if he ever has ATs in that spot. Then we get to the turn, he is left with AKo/AKs/AQs, TT-AA, couple of 88-99 combos. Again, even against a bet this small, he has to fold something. At this point it's time to let your 88-99 go and fold your Ace Queens and some of your AKos. So by the river he has TT-AA and some AKs/AKos. He has 6 combos of sets and maybe 4-5 combos of AKo. In GTO, he might have to call 2-3 combos of JJ-KK, but in reality he will never do that, because what kind of bluffs is catching Koon with when he has KK-JJ? KJo (which he blocks)? There is no exploit here, you have enough nutted combos + AKo to never be exploited here. Also, regs exploiting other regs in 4b pots 250bb deep on a super dry board versus obviously monster range, come on now.

Honestly I like a check back from Koon on the river. He has so little bluffs left there and so even JJ QQ KK is going to not call him a lot of the time so the jam is extremely thin. I get it's GTO and we need to balance with 78s but really there is only 4 combos of 78s and he has no other natural bluffs left here. Once he hits the Ace and has some show down value and doesn't have to bluff the third barrel ... maybe it's not GTO but really what worse hand calls in this spot.

I don't understand it either. his hand has gone from a bluff to a hand with reasonable show down value. After being called twice, there is a strong possibility that the opponent has TT. By shoving you will only be called by better. I think he played the hand fine up until the river.

I just don’t think Kane would call a river jam here with JJ-KK so I disagree with the river shove, I think it’s a check back despite him rarely being beat but maybe some players would level themselves into a call with QQ and in that case he would be better off jamming, I don’t think Kane is one of those players though but who knows he is crypto rich now.
