The Secrets of the Universe

Жыл бұрын

Astronomers have recorded the most powerful cosmic explosion so far. It was a gamma-ray burst that took place two billion light years away from Earth. It is the closest such event ever detected and was caught by a fleet of observatories both on and above the Earth. The event is already yielding a trove of scientific treasure.
The gamma-ray burst was so powerful that it affected our atmosphere 20 billion trillion km away and was bright enough to be seen through a smaller amateur telescope. But what are these gamma-ray bursts? What phenomenon creates these mighty cosmic explosions? Finally, and most importantly, why was this record-breaking gamma-ray burst so crucial to astronomers?
The 35th episode of the Sunday Discovery Series answers all these questions.

I've been enjoying this channel. I was under the impression that as a star is losing power ("dying") and the streams of energy flow outward the star implodes upon itself, as it spins and that's what creates the phenomenon known as a black hole, not just the increasing velocity and speed. Please elaborate. Thanks?
@mikesemus9773
@mikesemus9773 Жыл бұрын
It's fairly complicated, but the TL:DR version is when a star uses up the last of it's Fuel the stars gigantic mass is no longer pushed out by the power of the Fuel exploding, resulting in it "imploding", or getting so compressed by it's own gravity that all the bonds in the atoms break, then the atoms themselves get shredded into their quark components (we are not 100% sure exactly what happens, so this is educated guesswork). The matter gets crushed into a singularity (Black Hole) if the star is large enough and has enough mass. Most of the shredded particles are converted into Gamma Rays, which is a fancy way of saying the highest energy state matter can achieve, at least that we know of. These Gamma rays are so energetic that they can escape the gravity of the Black Hole, mainly as they are propelled by the unimaginably powerful magnetic field around the singularity then forced to the N/S poles where they are shot out from the Black hole in what we call Astrophysical jets. The spin as far as we know doesn't determine whether or not a Black Hole forms, that is a factor of it's mass/size. If a Star isn't large enough it will not form a Black Hole as there's not enough gravity to completely shred matter to the point it can't really be classified anymore, instead you end up with a Neutron star. However the spin of the star and the resulting Black Hole does affect the Magnetic field, although at this point you're talking so much energy it's largely irrelevant except for measurement purposes.
@koori3085
@koori3085 Жыл бұрын
@@mikesemus9773 The GRB does not "escape," the black hole. Nothing escapes a black hole, not visible light or electromagnetic energy of any sort. Technically, information is lost at the event horizon.
@mikesemus9773
@mikesemus9773 Жыл бұрын
@@koori3085 You are mistaken, only once it passes the event horizon is it lost to our ability to track it and unable to escape. GRB's are formed from matter that hasn't reached the event horizon. A Black Hole isn't just the event horizon, in fact we have almost zero idea what happens at that point. ALL the science around Black Holes is referring to the stuff that happens around it, not in it, since that is all out instruments can detect.

Interesting question. But if we take into account that super massive stars tend to frequently have super massive solar winds and are incredibly hot, it's actually very unlikely that supernovae of this size would have killed any life at all. As any planets orbiting stars of this size generally have extremely harsh conditions with no atmosphere, or one that's straight up toxic (like Venus).
