May 3, 2011 - An Australian team has made a record-breaking dive in what may be the world's deepest coldwater cave. But the explorers still haven't reached the end of this New Zealand cave, thought to lead to the mysterious source of the Pearse River.

Hi all, I was one of the divers in the film and I took the video. To asnwer a few questions: - you go there for the adventure and to see what is around the next corner. It is pretty cool to lay eyes on somewhere that you know nobody has ever seen before. - we do use electric scooters for all the deep diving beyond about 125m. This conserves energy and reduces the chances of dangerous CO2 buildup. -we don't have the budget for submarines, and you are right it is more fun to see it yourself.

the water is incredibly clear, bloody cold and slow flowing. The passages are quite wide so getting stuck is not an issue in this site. There is minimal silt in the cave due to the flow and regular flooding. - it is probably 5-6km to the source so we have a LONG way to go. Hopefully will have more info after next years expedition. - the bug should have been an AMPHIPOD...not an arthropod. Lots of interesting critters in there we are studying.

not really, diving is a low skill sport. just swim and breath. You dont even have to be a good swimmer as long as you can breath you can dive. a cave is special and you habe to not stir up silt so boyancy and keeping your fins from kicking up silt os added to the skills. it takes more mental skills. you have to know that your kids will do fine without you. you mustn't focus on the things that could go wrong, like a cave in, silt out, losing the line and getting lost, getting stuck, running out of air, dying in the dark. Those thoughts will cause your breathing to increase, which uses your gas up faster which isnt a good thing. One third in, one third out. Good luck.

The reason they don't bring a propeller system into the cave is because there is a lot of debris and silt at the bottom. they have to move very carefully. I do some cave diving and know how dangerous it is. When silt gets kicked up from the bottom it clouds the water, causing the diver to become very disoriented and makes it incredibly easy to get lost and lose track of where you are. the takes a long time to settle will cause death if the diver's tank runs out of air while in the cave.

Anyone suggesting that robots should dive this instead of humans, are clearly not divers. It's not about finding the source. It's about finding the source... yourself. Why do people climb Everest, when they can fly there? Why do they jump from buildings when there's an elevator? The experience counts more than the result.

Or even Hasenmeyer's dive back in 1983 in the Fontaine de Vaucluse where he reached 205m which was a huge record at the time. In 1985 the Modexa ROV reached 315m there and it's likely the passage goes even further down. Exley hadn't reached the bottom at Nacimiento del Rio Mante either. And the slope at the bottom of Bushman's carries on down. Nonetheless 194m is bloody deep.

DoubleThom, yes they are breathing the correct gas for the depth. However, they are using rebreathers, which is a closed loop. If they overexrt themselves, they will breath harder, therefore exhaling more CO2 into the loop. Too much CO2 cannot be handled by the scrubber in the unit and they end up breathing CO2 back into themselves

@MrEllisRedding One reason is because if you aim one of those scooters the wrong way, it can produce alot of silt and then you have no visibility and cannot see anything. They have been used in caves before but they probably had a good reason for not using them. Wasn't there so I can't say for sure.

@DJMight because that's not diving. They've sent one of those down to the deepest point on earth, no point setting a record with it in a cave, plus they could lose connection using wireless cause of the cave structure. They can't do it by wire because the length could not be long enough, it could get caught, snap, and the length of it would determine the weight which would cause it to use more power to pull it all. So people are better for this, they can fit easier.
