I heard it's best to record dry without any amps or pedals? Then re-amp or add like what I use: BIAS FX2...
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic Жыл бұрын
@@OTCRock4one there's no right or wrong way. The advantage of using a plugin like the Amp Designer in Logic Pro or Bias FX2 is that you're not committed to the amp tone. If you record with the plugin on you can always change it later. And yes you can always re-amp it later too if you want to get the sound directly from the amp (or blend the two together). Nothing with wrong recording directly from an amp too if you've got your tone dialled in. Check out this video for recording a real amp in Logic Pro: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i9iGmNGKmcCohaM.html Cheers Georges

Hi Georges, let me start by saying that I have been using Logic for many years. Anyway, your video came up and I decided to watch it. Your explanation is essential and precise. I appreciated your calm and knowledgeable way of presenting the information. As a musician and teacher I know how important it is for those who want to learn to find a "guide" of a certain "level", and you certainly are. Thanks for sharing your skills.

Ppl like you should get awards and money for your invaluable videos. Thank you. My question is. If I record this way, instead of micing up my amp, how true is the tone through my studio monitors going to be on the recording itself? I guess what I mean is. So it sounds really great through my studio monitors, ( the guitar tone(s) ) But what about if I were to complete a song and then listen in car or on headphone etc? I’m assuming that all just works itself out in mixing later? Just seems like playing virtual amps, through my studio monitors, would give an extremely false sense of what the tones going to sound like. On the other hand my brain also thinks, “ hey, it’s just like listening to an mp3 or CD through your studio monitors dummy. “ Don’t know why I’m making this more difficult than it needs to be but. It just seems likes micing up my cab would be a truer representation of things.
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words! Ya I wouldn't over think it too much. If it sounds good in your monitors and you generally know how they translate outside of your studio then you should be good! When mic'ing a real amp you'll get more of that sense of air coming out of the amp, but the virtual amps are sounding pretty good these days. You shouldn't notice a drastic difference outside of your studio any more than you would with a real amp. I hope that helps. Cheers Georges

When I plug my phone into a set of speakers(aux cord) I set the source volume (my phone) to around 75% and increase volume via the speakers. Does the same rule apply for guitars? Should I set the volume knob to 3/4 and only increase via the interface? Or does it not make a difference in sound quality? Appreciate all the videos, this has been one of my go to channels recently as I go through and try and create music

Are you hearing just the dry guitar signal when you're recording? It could be that you are monitoring directly from your audio interface (direct monitoring) rather than through Logic Pro (software monitoring). Check out the 6:14 mark of the video where I talk about monitoring to see if that helps. Cheers Georges

I'm confused when it comes to studio monitors/speakers/headphones part. I'd like to hear myself play not using headphones since it makes my ears hot after a while. What monitors/speakers do you recommend? Also if headphones what would you recommend? The majority of the time i like playing along to my favorite songs.
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rene, since we're not dealing with microphones using this method you can for sure use monitors to listen back to your electric guitars. Do you already own an audio interface? You'll want to look at getting powered studio monitors (that plug in to your audio interface). For affordable monitors, I like the KRK Rokits myself. The JBL MkII are another good option too. For headphones I like the Audio Technica ATH-M50. I hope that helps! Cheers Georges

I came here to find out the difference between ‘Guitar and Bass’ tracks and ‘Audio’ tracks as I have a thing I’m trying to figure out. Typically I’ve used the ‘Guitar and Bass’ tracks, but have always found them a bit flat and lifeless as far as presets are concerned. Last night, I accidentally selected ‘Audio Track’ and thought I’d stick an amp modeller on it and man it was an epic difference. My guitar (Jaguar) was sssooo much brighter and ‘amp-like’, and adding pedals was actually adding to the tone, not muffling it like I’ve found on the ‘Guitar and Bass’ track presets. I have one dilemma I’m hoping can be resolved here: When I use and ‘Audio Track’ my Scarlett audio interface seems to push through a fuller signal even when the gain dial is turned right down. I effectively have no gain control at the interface. Just curious if this is a typical behaviour. My guitar comes through logic very loud, but without clipping. Just unsure how to get the same ‘flashing green’ gain control on an ‘Audio Track’ that I get on a ‘Guitar and Bass’ track. I feel like ‘Audio track’ gives me the better sound. But I think I am missing the interface gain function somehow. Any thoughts from the wise? Thanks. Great video. New subscriber here for sure. Very well articulated. 👌
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 9 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for the comment. The "Guitar or Bass" should be the same as a regular "Audio Track" but just with the Library Preset plugins already applied. It could just be that you prefer the sound with fewer plugins and that the numerous plugins added with the Library Presets are changing the playback volume. I prefer to just start with a plain Audio Track and build from there. I'd check to see where your levels are at with the basic Audio Track before adding any plugins. If you're in the -18 to -9db range then you're good to go! I hope that helps. Cheers Georges

Do you need a mic to record a electric guitar? You only need to plug your guitar into interface right?! And another question, i want to record the guitar in midi as well, do i need a cable for that, or can you create a midi track from the recorded guitar in audio with flex.. all the best dennis and thanks for this video :)
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 9 ай бұрын
You can record directly into your audio interface like I do in the video. If you want to record MIDI there are dedicated MIDI guitars for that. If you are only recording single note lines you could try converting audio to MIDI using FlexPitch, but a MIDI guitar would do a better job. Cheers Georges

So, I’ve purchased Logic Pro, I have real amps, and pedals and such, BUT, idk if I missed or not, I’d there a separate software you have to be able to pull all those amps up? Or are they actually on Logic Pro? I’m new to it. I ask because I don’t record at home, I record quite a few miles away from home and I have a Marshall half stack I tote around. So if logic already has those amps installed, that’s a major help and weight lifted off me every time I want to record.

Which audio interface are you using? Look for a knob called "direct monitor" or something similar. You're likely hearing the audio feed directly from your audio interface before it's being processed in Logic Pro. This can be helpful to cut down on latency, but you won't hear any of your plugins while recording. Another thing to look at is to activate "input monitoring" in Logic Pro. Look for the little "I" button on your track. I hope that helps. Cheers Georges

I ran into a new problem that I’ve never had with any daw. I cannot record guitars. It’s not a faulty interface or a broken cable. When I play, logic only captures the attack of the strings. I’ve tried switching guitars, using a larger buffer size, but nothing has worked. I haven’t changed any settings for months so it’s not that either. Edit: reaper records perfectly fine but I prefer to use reaper for mixing/mastering.
@knuckledustermusic
@knuckledustermusic 9 ай бұрын
Any luck with this? Reaper records fine, but Logic doesn't? A larger buffer size will give you more latency. Try setting your buffer to 128 or 256 when recording. Cheers? Georges
