I hope you're sitting down cause this is one long, strange and fun road trip. Episode 286 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is all about a trip my friends I took, which began in Georgia but saw us driving to the coast of South Carolina and then to the mountains of North Carolina and finally, back to Georgia. Along the way I bought a 1970 Datsun 510 two-door, with the goal of driving it from the beach to the mountains so we could go snowboarding one last time before the season ended. The car was mostly great and it made it home intact. My leg? Not so much. lol
Thanks for watching! Want to support the channel? Please go to www.fsmgarage.com and grab a shirt, hat, hoodie or sticker pack.
You can also find me on Instagram under the handle "Finnegan999"
Thanks again!

Talk about stirring up old memories. I was stationed in Charleston in 1972 Since my Malibu SS in CA, I ended up getting a Datsun 510 for transportation. Basic 2 door, L16, 4 speed, and not much else. I drug that thing around over the years... Charleston, Rota Spain, California, Hawaii, and back to SoCal before finally traiding it in on a 1977 Datsun 620 pickup, with an L20 and a 4 speed. Trashed the 4 speed, and upgraded it to a 5 speed. Good memories with both of them.

I used to have a 1980 Datsun pickup in high school. It had a 280z motor and trans swapped in it from a wrecked 280. I had a blast in that pick up. I ended up totaling it hitting a deer coming home from work in the middle of the night after I painted it. The deer wouldn't have totaled it if I had the front bumper on the truck. I had just painted it black with two mustard yellow stripes still had tape on the mirrors. I was going to put the truck back together the next morning at home. I feel sick to my stomach just thinking about it. I'm 40 years old now and I still think about that truck often. I've always wanted a 510 to go with that truck in the driveway. Maybe some day. Congrats! The car is beautiful!

My first car at 16 was a 1971 510. It was given to me by a friend of my older brother. Being a northers car, it was full of rust! I wrenched on that car a ton and learned a lot. It looked like crap, but was fun the drive.

I had a workmate who owned a 70's 510. She had it all tricked out and was an SCCA racer. It was her daily driver too. She had a lead foot for sure. LOL. I knew folks who had down draft dual Hollies on those cars . They liked them better then the side drafts. The Datsun side draft carbs were notoriously cold-blooded on start-up. I had a 72 240Z and those carbs were tuned and they still had cold start issues. Get the Hollies for better running overall. Get well soon Board Runner. Hope it heals fast.

I learned to drive with ‘76 620 pickup and experienced everything you did will owning it. Electrical issues were common with the Datsuns of that era. Those old wire harnesses had fuse links that burned out all the time. Great memories. It had the Webber 2 barrel carb, Thrush exhaust header, and exhaust. It would burn rubber in all 4 gears. Wish I still had it. It got t-boned by a ‘86 GMC Jimmy. The little truck saved my life. 😢 A buddy of mine had a ‘74 B510. Ah, the memories. 😊

In the early 80s I had a 510 station wagon with a 4speed, cam, headers, carb and a glass back. The body was seven different colours, and had rust and lots of body damage, but the motor ran great, and I had tall good winter tires, it was my winter beater and ski machine, when I lived in Canada. We made a wooden box on the roof, just screwed it on to the roof, for the skis, and with the extra space of the station wagon four of us could load up our gear and go skiing. When the roads got really bad, I had a full set of chains. It was a great driving winter beater, it was fun to drive and I hated selling it. BTW, I’ve broken both fibulas skiing. Cheers from Tokyo

Epic. Glad you got to bring your kid along. Mostly so he could learn the ways of the Roadkill. I did a similar thing with my dad as a teenager. When on winter vacation in California visiting relatives, we were on the beach one day and rented a car the next day, and drove to the mountains and skied. There was a decent snow storm on the way up. The authorities tried to turn us away because we didn't have snow chains. My dad replied, "we're from Michigan and this is nothing". Somehow, pre-GPS, we found our way around the roadblock and had an awesome day on the slopes. I will never forget that day!

I didn't actually find out it had broken until 5 years later during my exit physical The big bummer, I was getting into cross-country running, after the break (which did NOT fully heal) I no longer have the stability to take on un-even terrain Glad yours was diagnosed and does NOT need surgery!

Hey Mike! Everytime I see one of those Nissan L series engines, it reminds me of my Mum's 910 Bluebird. It was an '83, built here in Australia with an L20B and a 5 speed. She drove it from '92 until 2002 but only because the back window was gonna rust out. My sister learned to drive in it and I got to start it up a few times. Weber carb.....get the adapter for a bigger round aircleaner. The stock ones that come with the Webers choke them out and are trash. Make sure the floats are set correctly most of the time they aren't properly set from the factory. If it is a 38/38 it will have synchronized barrels but you can get a kit to make them progressive. This will keep it from flooding out and makes start up easier. They are great little carbs for mileage and performance once they are properly tuned. I second the name "Piss Missile"!

Never owned a 510, but have been in, driven and helped workon dozens, plus all the rally cars here in Australia. Quick point, the L20 was the OHC inline 6 cyl which won't fit in a 510, the L20B from the 710 and 910, and 620 and 720 pickups, do. A little trick I was told when I had my 720KC, with L18, was to use the pickup's split exhaust manifold, gives you 4-2-1 headers with nice long primaries.

Have to love the roadkill moment of burned wires. 😅 Funny thing about snow boarding, since you can't cross your legs, you're less likely to break them. Had you been skiing, you may have broken more bones!!

I had a '72 240Z. Miss it, Mike! It had good leg room, but yeah, kind of tight side to side. Love that 510!

Nice pick up. John Morton was BRE's driver. A legend in his own right.

So it's funny, my vintage Datsun racecar is a roadster, as seen in the episode, and was sponsored by both a SC beach business (from Myrtle Beach) and was also sponsored by Sugar Mountain. Glad you met some of the Datsun gang out there!

My Buddy’s 510 he had in the 1970s was Datsun orange, which to me was the perfect color for that car.

About 15 years ago a friend of mine blew his knee out on that same upper loop around on Sugar Mountain and had to walk the whole way down as well. Hope you have a speedy recovery.
