I considered applying to KCPD back in 1993. I contacted them by telephone. Had to dial information to get the number. No internet or Google back then. The lady that finally answered my call was so rude. I asked if I could be mailed an application (had to fill them out by hand back then). She told me I had to come and get it myself. Didn't feel like driving 150 miles there and back. Your loss Kansas City.

Decades of cover ups and no accountability for the actions of bad cops is the reason we're in this mess nation wide. The citizens of this country wants transparency, accountability and they don't want to be held in fear of being killed and oppressed in their own neighborhoods, by those in uniform sworn to protect them. After multiple videos of police misconduct, brutality and the killing of unarmed civilians, people are angry and they feel betrayed. Police Officers need to understand that they are first line of defense for maintaining a civil society. A civil society can only happen if the people have trust and are willing to comply and obey the rules and the laws. Once trust and faith is gone, that's when you have chaos and disorder. The severe lack of trust and faith in law enforcement is the problem and it needs to be re-establish immediately.

I work for a PD and see the real consequences of our officers retiring and resigning at the cyclic rate. Calls for police assistance sit in the que for several hours (even a full day) because each shift is below minimum or just at minimum.

I think we need fresh officers and maybe younger ones and maybe install more black officers in black neighborhoods to help regain confidence in the police. We do have a gang and drug and gang problem in k.c. and we must be firm with them. We have neighbors where the crimes are black on black and almost always drug related and unsolved. It would be nice to once again prosecute drug dealers.

Policing has always been a difficult job. Most police forces assign officers to long shifts and / or are always rotating their shifts. Almost every member of the public they come in contact are not happy to be interacting with the cop. Many are in the middle of one of the worst days of their lives. The commanders are frequently authoritarian and don't do their job well. The typical department has about 6 linear feet of policies and procedures which they are required to follow. But, the shear volume of the material means that no mortal can understand that material well enough to follow every subtle detail. Yet, if an officer fails to follow some inane detail AND the commander wants to, the cop can be disciplined. Thus, the cops are vulnerable to "Tyranny by Policy." Finally, the job doesn't pay well. Although that is slightly countered by excellent retirement for the pay & reasonably good health insurance & vacation benefits. Because policing is such a terrible job, it attracts 2 types of people, the idealistic, who have a sincere desire to serve. But also, those who have no better options in life. After a few years, the idealistic tend to leave for better opportunities while the others don't have better options, so they stay. Which is one of the issues that contributes to the idealistic ones leaving. Their coworkers & commanders are generally those who didn't have better options. Who wants to work a difficult job where bosses and coworkers are difficult to work with? The universal, common theme for all these criminal, excessive use of force cases by police is that the commanders are unambiguous that the misbehaving officer was not following orders. Thus, the root cause is that these commanders are unable to instill Good Discipline within their forces. Which is another indication that those who remain in the job of policing after a few years really don't have better options. The commanders achieve their positions thru their political skills, not their leadership skills. Look at the incident in Loveland Colorado. You can see in the Chief's public comments that he views this damning incident as just a difficult & challenging political problem to master. When the video shows that 10 out of 10 of his staff all did the wrong thing, that is pretty compelling evidence that the entire force if dirty. Good grief, the Chief even bragged about how he personally knew every member of his staff. When these types of incidents see the light of day, the few good cops will leave because they know from personal experience how many of their fellow officers regularly misbehave. When the misbehavior is usually petty, the good officers can justify ignoring the misconduct. But, when these extreme cases become public, the good cops realize that in their work, they are vulnerable to being caught up in the catastrophe. Why take the risk with all the other negatives of the job?

Have to have force that fairly represents community they serve...two sides work together..Will not gain trust of public with these random killings and mistreatment
