Ayd Design Co. You’re welcome. I’m a hifi enthusiast and beginning woodworker. I built a simple stereo cabinet with record storage using pocket screws. I truly appreciate your woodworking skills and craftsmanship. I learned a lot from your video and I hope to make improved version of my stereo cabinet based on your design in the future.

Beautiful! I’m trying to figure out what direction to go with my setup. I bought this house 6 months ago and am still playing records on my cheap, all-in-one/don’t care if it gets broken setup. I don’t have the skill yet for something this impressive, but this is definitely some good inspiration for me. Love the project, the product, and the presentation. Also, love the Diresta ice pick!

@@AydDesignCo Thanks! You know, your video got me thinking. I don't have a permanent solution, but I figured out a temporary fix (old wooden dynamite box on top of the credenza to elevate the TV). Now there's room for the turntable. Set up last night, and started my Saturday off jamming to the Trolls soundtrack with my kids (found it for my 5yo's birthday...trying to get them hooked on records). I think a record storage solution (I'm thinking a simple plywood box shelf) will be a more appropriate initial furniture project.

Nice woodworking project, it looks very good, but.....this is the worst possible way to site or position a turntable if you want good clean sound! You have just coupled the turntable to the floor with a big heavy piece of furniture that is also loaded with heavy records, meaning that it will conduct low frequency vibrations extremely well right up into the turntable. The speakers are sitting on the floor right next to the cabinet, so bass vibrations from the speakers will go right into your new cabinet and up into the turntable and vibrate the record, tonearm and cartridge! You will seem to get lots of bass, but probably boomy bass with a lot of overhang on the notes. If you turn it up loud enough, it might even feedback with a low howl or thrumming sound. An interesting experiment you can try would be to NOT turn the turntable on to make it spin but merely place the needle on the record and see how far you can turn up the volume control on the amplifier before it starts to howl and feedback. (This test assumes that your turntable wasn't designed to automatically mute the audio signal from the needle and cartridge when the platter isn't spinning , or during certain automatic pick up and set down modes, as a few turntables are). If feedback occurs with the volume control anywhere near a position that you might set it to when listening to music, then you know for certain that you are causing Distortion and muddiness in your audio quality. At the very least, you should move those speakers as far away as possible from the cabinet, or move the cabinet away from the speaker positioning, and put the speakers on stands to get them off the floor. A Also, if the turntable tends to skip when you walk around in front of the cabinet, I won't be surprised. Again, you have coupled the turntable to the floor, and virtually all floor joists move, with the exception perhaps of very recently built houses with engineered lumber for the floor joists. Also, most floors will dip away downwards as soon as you get 6 in to a foot away from the wall; did you check the top of your cabinet to see if it's level or if it's tipped downwards? The stereo cabinet will probably tend to rock a little bit as you walk around and you might hear the footfall noise through the speakers, or the turntable might even skip. (This is often more prevalent on carpeted floors because of the sponginess and give of the carpet and padding). This is why many fancy stereo stores have lightweight steel frame equipment racks that have adjustable floor spikes to enable you to level them, and that are specifically constructed to be lightweight and not prone to transmitting or resonating at extremely low bass frequencies. Personally, I have found that in most cases, and especially if you have problems with the turntable picking up your foot falls or skipping when you walk by, mounting it on a light rigid shelf will almost invariably solve those problems.
@AydDesignCo
@AydDesignCo 5 жыл бұрын
good 'un Thank you for you well thought out, in-depth comment! I appreciate and understand your concerns. I have this set up in my basement on a concrete slab on top of carpet. If I were on a main level or higher with this setup, that would be something I may have to look into. The hidden or flip-top record player cabinet concept is something I simply needed to do to prevent my cats from walking/running over my record player when it was exposed on top of my previous set up, in that regard they can walk/run around on top of the cabinet while a record is playing with no skips! Though, if I ever do move it, I’ll remember your comment. Thank you!
@goodun6081
@goodun6081 5 жыл бұрын
@@AydDesignCo , I can understand that since you have a concrete floor the turntable is highly unlikely to skip from foot vibrations, but concrete is an excellent conduit for bass vibrations, which will travel from the speakers up into your home built stereo cabinet, and so your turntable certainly is not going to sound as good as it would if you put it on a lighter support structure. Just some ideas to think about and perhaps generate some experimentation with equipment placement on your part. Get those speakers off the floor on some lightweight stands, for starters.

I liked this, but I couldn't help but think it'd be nice to have some kind of damper on that lid. Something to keep it propped open when it's up, and to stop it from closing too hard. I'd hate to set an album going, only to have the needle jump because I set the lid down too hard. Maybe that's just me..

I was having the same thoughts while building this. I couldn’t find any soft closing hinges that would fit the limited space within the closed cabinet. I have since added cork pads to the flip top lid to eliminate any threat of a jumping needle. Thank you!
