Snow levels in Braemar have now reached more than 2ft (70cms) breaking the previous unofficial record of 68cms 20 years ago. The Beast from the East Two continues to bring severe weather to the UK and blanket the Cairngorms National park in heavy snow. Temperatures overnight 8th to 9th February 2021 fell to -14 with deeper lows predicted for the following nights.
The village of Braemar sits high up in the Cairngorms National Park, close to Glenshee Ski Centre, at an altitude of 339 metres. This film shows current conditions around the village and the extent of freezing, which has created some wonderful icicles along the buildings. The Braemar Gathering Games Pavilion is now buried in snow and difficult to get to within the Park. Local deer are also struggling to forage for food and have come close to the village. The slow air music is called 'The Beauty of Cromar Before Me' composed and performed by talented fiddle player Paul Anderson from nearby Tarland.

makes me sad it doesn't snow like that or even snow at all more then maybe once or twice each winter down in south of UK and east Anglia. Still, I remember it snowed 15-20cm in 2022 where I live, not even the beast from the east gave us that much. Once in a lifetime snow that just doesn't fall much anymore. Remember 2008,2009, 2010 and 2011 having snow down in Kent enough I got off school and you could sledge, even once on christmas day( my favourite memory of christmas) , then moved up to Cambridgeshire when I was 7 in 2012, had snow, 2013 really good snow, 2014 no snow, 2015 snow, 2016, 2017 no snow, 2018 snow, 2019 no snow, 2020 no snow, 2021 snow, 2022 snow, 2023 snow. It sounds not bad, I know, but the difference is then the snow was the deep stuff, the snow that stuck around for several days or even weeks, I remember there was still snow in early April in 2013, people flocked to Magog down every year for sledging and it would often be more then 10cm deep, it would snow as late as spring and as early as December. Then since 2015 the snow has changed. It doesn't stay longer then a day or two at most, sometimes it's just falling and unable to settle even on grass or rooftops, and it's way too shallow. 2018 snow was exceptional because it was the first time since 2015 I remember snow falling and being more then 1cm, and now there seems to be a pattern where out of every 2 years, the first one has no snow and is mild, then the other one is cold enough to have snow. The snow used to be a guarantee, now it is a rarity and any snow that does fall and settle never gets more snow on top. I worry that by the time I'm 30 snow won't be able to fall in South of UK except once every 10 years and light.
