Hello from Florida, I haven't seen any of your consistently useful Journalisms over this last Year. Hmm I've always felt that You've earned and should have greater Subscription Numbers . Anyway , thank you for this report , I immediately had a bit of a listen to a part of the Evans Album , sound quality is very good, just as you mention. Although I'm not any sort of JAZZ fan or collector , I've felt that You and the Jazz Sheppard are 'the' North Stars and are outstanding assets for your communities. I've considered you to present with high levels of integrity which I suspect is missing in most of the Gear Review Precentors in Print . Watching this title review I notice that you look healthy and not at all blown out , shaky , nervous, skittish or homeless. Thank you for being there and doing this fine work . Why would I be skittish or homeless? Anyway, thanks for your very nice words. I write for stereophile magazine every month. And I have also written consistently for jazz times with that magazine just folded. Again, thank you for your nice comments. Dan is the real deal.

Appreciate your feedback about the Bill Evans title. Many vinyl enthusiasts on You Tube said they weren't getting this because they don't need yet another live Bill Evans title on RSD, but your feedback on this is making me want this one. I thought it looked really good and thought the audio quality might be superb due to the European locations. I want to get the Chet in Mono. There are too many LPs I want this Record Store Day but will have to really narrow it down because everything add$ up so quick.

I bought Bill Evans "Treasures" and its a superb album but I cannot really tell if the album is in stereo or mono or both. There's no indication either way anywhere on the sleeve or labels. This may sound dumb, but as someone who owns two seperate turntables, each with respective mono & stereo cartridges, it's important I know this. If its a stereo record then I cannot play it on the mono turntable without risking damage to the records. If it's a mono then I'll play it to its full benefit on the mono turntable. Does anyone have any appropriate information for me? Cheers. 😊👍

I've been disappointed by 2/3 of my RSD purchases. Most RSD titles, especially jazz ones, aren't available to preview on streaming services, so I go in blind and buy titles by artists I like just because they're exclusive RSD titles and very limited editions. Many of them have mediocre sound quality and are the scraps left over after the good stuff is released on mainstream vinyl. So I REALLY appreciated this video. I'll buy Bish & Bill Evans Treasures. Without this video, I would have bought Shirley Scott's RSD title and been disappointed, regretted my purchase. Thanks for saving me some money & disappointment!

@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Sorry, I meant to say that your video has given me confidence that Bishop & Evans will be great purchases for me--your recommendations are always safe bets. I normally love records by or featuring Shirley Scott, so if I hadn't seen your video, I would have definitely bought it on RSD. But after seeing your video review, I feel it would be another disappointing RSD purchase, like so many others that I've made blindly. So you've saved me money & disappointment on the Scott title, and pointed me to two other titles I'm very likely to love. Again, thanks for your conscientious and helpful reviews!

Ken, great video! Sad to hear that “Miss Shirley” is weighted down by poor recording techniques and the Late, Great Ernie Andrews who is magnificent on “Live Session! With Cannonball Adderley. I feel Scott’s “Queen Of The Organ” at the front room suffers from mic placement and audio issues, but as do you, I dig her work.

Thank you. Honestly, I was about to dump this channel, because even though I believe I have certain knowledge to share, which comes from 15 years of being a jazz musician, 30 years of being a jazz journalist, and about 10 years of working at the best jazz record store in the country, but it seems the channels that get the most play are all about style and not substance. But a comment like yours makes me want to continue.

Ken, it’s absolutely the case your reviews are miles ahead with respect to how you convey how the music sounds as well as the history surrounding each record. I suspect that there’s a whole wave of record buyers who typically started watching KZfaq videos during the pandemic and are (I believe and hope) working their way to you as the more curious-minded eventually migrate past the superficial in search of substance - and here you are with a channel full of content. Please keep going!

I generally avoid organ Jazz albums, but I'm in for the Shirley Scott. Being a little bit down in the mix may be more preferential to someone like me and I will take anything of the wonderful George Coleman. I also find the Reel To Real archival releases may be weaker sonically, but the performances are always scorching. Roy Brooks Understanding and indeed George Coleman's It Baltimore are two perfect examples. As for song selection....By the Time I Get To Phoenix and Never Can Say Goodbye were big numbers for Isaac Hayes from Hot Buttered Soul and Black Moses albums respectively. I can see perfectly why she would cover those.

As I noted in the interview, it’s standard practice for jazz sessions to cover the popular songs of the day. But it can be done badly. Ernie Andrews takes up almost an entire side with his vocal drivel. Surely Scott is wonderful on all her prestige albums, but you can barely hear her on this one, and this entire performance is aimed at some fat dude in polyester pants, drinking a Tom Collins.

@@kenmicallefjazzvinylaudiop6455 Misunderstanding. I say that people buy record store day releases before they buy the classic albums of an artist. Yes, I have no proof, but I think I am not alone in believing this. Record store day plays with FOMO and not with education. It is not about introducing an artist to a broader audience, it is about selling stuff from the vaults. It became a lame business day and I think the organisers are not interested in building a long term basis of new record collectors, I rather think they make the old mistake again, selling out, making money and when enough new "collectors" left, blame somebody else. Tell me, why do we not see the classic Jazz albums rereleased on record store day? The ones where you pay a fortune for a clean OG?

Let them keep serving up white jazz artists either past their prime or wasted. The young audience have been fed too much of this crap and too little of the REAL heavy hitters.
