If you want to hear a song using this overhead setup, there is a full recording of me playing a song where we A/B the drums with the track and without the track so you can hear them at the end of this video.

Just wanted to chime in on setting up the room and killing off the "ricochet" effect from ceilings and walls. I went to Lowe's and got a 4'x8' sheet of OSB (Oriented Strand Board), the thinnest kind and also bought a 4'x8' grey outdoor carpet. I also bought staples for my staple gun and some spray glue. I then cut the OSB down to various shapes & dimensions, and then covered those pieces with the grey carpeting, after spraying the surface of the OSB with spray glue. Make sure there's enough overlap to wrap the grey carpet around the OSB pieces and staple that in place. So it looks nicer. Then I affixed these pieces to my ceiling and walls, and that took care of the crazy acoustic zones of the room. If you wanna make corner killers, cut an 18"x18" square, then cut that into two triangles and cover them with carpet. You'll probably need some long screws to attach them as well. Overall it cost me ~$150 to treat the room in such a way, and it looks pretty cool too. And if someone wants to stroke the furry wall, they're more than able and welcome to.

Jimmy Page and Eddie Kramer would often record John Bonham’s kit with no more than two overheads and another at the opposite end of the room. Additionally, they would sometimes isolate John and his kit from the rest of the band and record him under a flight of stairs or in the loo. Pagey always said that ‘distance makes depth’.

Couldn't agree more...the overheads really work to add "presence" to the kit

I feel to Mix the overheads/room as if I only had the 4 mic's carefully mixing in kik snr toms for detail. The overhead and Room* are the drum mix* Thank you, for the video -always learning.

I have a very small room but leave the door open put a tube mic away 6feet from the drums and I also place a omni mic above the kick looking at the beater head between the tom and floortom and I get pretty good sound with two audient ASP 880 pres

I recorded drums with one Neumann U87 mic just above the bass drum at head height about 4 feet away in a big room. I had no idea what I was doing.

Great video. A good follow-up would be one on studio acoustic tips. That one looked like it should have had a great deal of reverb to deal with yet saw little baffling anywhere.

Follow-up...meant relatively little baffling compared to the volume of the space.

If I only have 2 large diaphragm condenser mics and 2 active ribbon mikes, and a room that just fits a drum kit, what’s the best I can do?

When doing overheads with Tom mics, is there a chance I can get phase issues on the toms? How do I keep them clean sounding when O/H mics are in the mix? I am experimenting in practice of moving overheads around to figure out where they sound best for cymbals but need to figure out drum impacts in conjunction with those close mics. Thanks I’m advance!

A couple questions actually, as this vid is exactly where I'm. What kind of mics work best for room mics? Is phase a big big issues for drummers if the overheads aren't equal distance from the snare?
@brooksbohmbach1
@brooksbohmbach1 3 жыл бұрын
yes, grab a mic cable, and use it as a tape measure, make sure the snare is the same cable length to each overhead. boom!

@@brooksbohmbach1 Thanks man. I'm liking the over R shoulder, and 1 above the snare. I'm not micing the toms. 2 OH's = distance, bsss, and snare. It's a good start

I think the carpet isn't for sound, it's to stop the kit leaving the room while you are playing.

Query: is it a good idea to record the drums using two room mics and close mic’ing the bass drum?
@StephenTaylorDrums
@StephenTaylorDrums 6 жыл бұрын
Depends on your goal. Why would you only close mic the kick?
@harrisonmyers1572
@harrisonmyers1572 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Taylor it was a mic’ing technique I’d read about in Modern Drummer magazine. I forget what the endgame was of that technique-it’s been a while since I read that article.

Harrison Myers if it gets the sound you're going for, then it's a great idea. That's the goal.

Room mics or overheads? There's a technique called Glyn Johns (after the engineer), which employs 2 overheads and a kick mic. This gives you a very natural sound, if the mics are placed well.

really important to record room sound ..only if that room is huge with a right position soundprof panels around..but if its a little room ..better make alot of soundproofs panels..alot...i mean fullroom..and curtains everywhere! then use room sound as vst ..uad eventide softube waves lexicon best room reverbs plugs on marker 200$+ each or download cracked :) so ur choice like ..ur room sound..if this room is huge is best..if its little...nah..its sound like repetition shit ....or vst modeling room sound...belive me ..that is no difference... at all ( vst can bring little bit more options..) but if u are recording drums in huge naked room ..its sound like orchestra crazy...if in small naked room..its sound like trash if u are not belive me...test :) if u think dat vst or hardware modeling room sound is bad..and natural room sound is perfect...pls check chris lorde guides for start ...when he start mixing ..all hes doing is ssl eq comp and modeling reverb for every instrument how he wants...perfect room natural sound is for lives and orchestra music mostly

Depends what you're going for a bit, I have a D112 which I get so the front half of it (or just a little more) is through the porthole (which is at 3 o'clock, starting about 4" from the edge), pointing straight at where the beater hits. Sounds like this: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fdiRddmTzbOcink.html

For that track, yea, we did. Was just the sound we wanted. In the studio, it's about the sound. Sometimes that's super choked...sometimes really open. This worked for that situation.

You are setting the kit up wrong, you've put the snare drum on the bass drum, you'll never reach it from there.
