The concept of "real" drums is a fallacy. Compression and EQ all change the sound of the original drum part recording, which are basically one long sample anyway. Using a sample doesn't make a performance any better or easier to play (in other words it's not cheating), it just changes the sound. It's EXACTLY the same as a guitar amp - it takes the acoustic signal and changes the sound. I think things like this video are great experiments, but there's nothing wrong with using a sample, especially if you are smart and BLEND it with the acoustic sound. This bullshit about "real" drums is just for gatekeepers and elitists. Focus on the music, not how it's recorded.

@@Syklonus A very wise man once said "the only thing that matters is what comes out of the speakers", and I fully agree with that. If your drum processing involves reinforcing the acoustic sound with samples, there's strictly nothing wrong with that... I would even go as far as saying that some music genres such as extreme metal with 200+bpm blast beats actually require samples to sound good. But once in a while, you'll get guys like Dirk or Peter Wildoer who do not need samples cuz they manage to hit both super fast AND super hard... Another point to take into consideration is indeed the drummer's drums, settings,, sound, touch and overall sonic identity which very often get buried under samples. And it would be disingenuous to say that "classic" processing (eq, comp, gate, exp, transient designing, etc.) erase a drummer's original sound as much as actually replacing hits with samples. What do you think? (BTW, not antagonizing here, just exchanging ideas for the pleasure of it...)

@@MaverickMustaine By itself a good drum library like superior drummer has plenty of dynamics. To much compression is more of a general problem in mixing nowadays, and the listeners to some degree expect a certain amount of loudness, especially in more agressive metal genres. You should cover the most important aspect of mixing live drums: phase alignment, and still advertise InPhase. Also a gate isn't a good solution to bleed at this tempo, it's not fast and accurate enough (3:11) notice how choppy and unnatural this is. This is a Waves commercial for its products, that's fine, but it would have been great if you include some really important things like phase.

What he does not explain here, is that he has shifted the pitch of the snare down. How much, I can’t tell. That’s why the snare ring cut is at ~200hz. If you tune a snare that low naturally, you’d want to dampen it and a low tension makes it harder to play blast and other stuff you need a lot of rebound for. It’s all ok, just that it is a bit misleading to say ”natural sound” when pitch shifted is not natural.

In several points of this video we can see that there are at least 1024 samples of delay using plugins in tracking. That means more or less at least 21 ms of DAW latency (maybe more considering ad/da roundup). That means that there is NO WAY that a pro drummer can play 4658700 bpm blast beat with metronome hearing from him self on headphones in real time. Why do you Waves guys always believe we are totally stupid?
@adairdaufembach
@adairdaufembach 4 жыл бұрын
Alessandro Rorato Follow me on instagram to see me recording drums. @adairdaufembach The samples were at 1024 because I was recording the video too with Quicktime player, which is extremely CPU consuming. If you’re using reaper you can easily use that amount of plugins if you a 16gb RAM computer. I’d never agree on recording a video lying about anything. On Pro Tools maybe is not possible to do it, but in Reaper is absolutely possible.

The problem with all these programs/software is it deadens the drum tracks. And if all other instruments are using similar software the music sounds totally flat and has no depth. Listen to today's metal music using all these programs and software and then listen to the albums from the 60's to the early 90's when most recordings didn't have software to limit the sounds - you'll hear depth in that music had. Software makes things easier but it looses a lot of the depth and warmth.

don't blame software. Blame everybody that has been making music louder and louder so there's no more dynamic range, compressing and limiting the shit out of everything. You can go right now and have a nice dynamic and quiet mix, like the 70's (just do'nt overcompress it and you're set), but that's not where the industry is going.

The difference is that the drummer in the band is actually performing the part. With samples, you get a drummer in a really nice studio with really nice mics hitting drums at different volumes. Sure it might "sound better" but at that point you're not even playing with the drummer in your band because all the characteristics in his touch and techniques are replaced by someone else. These plug-ins alter the Timbre of drums to help it sit better in the mix. Not alter the performance

I definitely agree that the post processing here is a little over the top, perhaps that was what they were going for artistically. But imo photoshop for music would be something like quantizing the performance and what not. I wouldn't normally be so extreme with the eq, but that was the whole point of the video, to demonstrate how much these plugins can do. Thanks for the reply!

Sorry, but the kick drum sounds inconsistent and flabby. It's darts in and out of audibility, and it's the one part that really could have use a sample. Even if it was a sample of the actual kick drum of that kit, but either way it needed something consistent. There's a reason that kick drum triggers are so popular in metal, because the sound is so dense that it NEEDS that consistent one level click to cut through. The rest sounds great though.
