SOS visit GSI Studios in New York and speak with Engineer & Producer Josh Giunta, who shares some of his extensive knowledge of piano recording and microphone techniques.
In this video, Josh shows how he sets up microphones for recording the Yamaha CX6 grand piano at GSI Studios. Using a range of Telefunken and Neumann condenser microphones and Royer and Coles ribbon microphones, Josh demonstrates the variety of stereo configurations he likes to use. He details the importance of microphone placement, selecting the right microphone for the task, and how to deal with phase issues when recording piano with complex microphone arrays.
In Part 2, we join Josh Giunta in the control room to listen back to the microphones and learn more about his mixing process.

Hi! Perfect video! If you could borrow 4X AKG 414, 2X Neumann TLM 170i, 2X Neumann U 87, 2X Gefell M930 and 2X AEA R44C mics which ones would you use for a yamaha c3 on a livingroom?

I have access to these mics (in matched pairs): Neumann M49, Neumann M149, Neumann M250, Neumann M269, Coles, RCA MI 6203. Which ones would you choose to record a Yamaha C7? My mixing console only allows for 6 simultaneous mics. Thanx!

Why do you keep the piano covered?

I'm surprised how NOT close the close mics are. Also surprised that that there are no mics on the left side of the piano. No hammer attack. Still, after watching part two it sounded amazing.

Depends on the genre of the recorded piece. It would be terrible to listen to a Chopin's nocturne with the noise of hammer attack!

People calling Steinway dark... Better example of a dark piano imo would be Bosendorfer. I personally find Yamaha and Steinway to both be bright to the point of being brittle in the range of roughly A4 to C6 (not just when mic'd with a high end LDC, they're brittle in that range period). I also find the two brands to be the most similar sounding on the market. A bandmate of mine that grew up in a home with a Steinway failed blind tests picking a Yamaha piano as Steinway. Another example of a piano that isn't bright would be Masin & Hamlin though I consider it to be more warm than it is dark. In any case I find it absurd that someone would describe Steinway as dark. In comparison to what? I stencil piano or the brightest Yamaha on the market?

There is a huge variation between Steinway's, plus knowing there are Steinway still in use from the 60's, I wouldn't generalize. I think old Steinway's definitely have a deeper sound (more bass, richer medium, the treble are not the best though I think). I wouldn't describe them as dark, but if I had to compare them with Yamaha they are relatively darker. Yamaha's are the brightest clearest piano I've ever played on, but the sound quality isn't as pleasing as others. But I could at 100% tell apart a 60's Steinway and a modern Yamaha. Modern Steinway's have become a bit brighter and clearer, I might agree with you

@@jonasdaverio9369 I would generalize. Yamaha is as you said the brightest brand, Steinway (of brands worth talking about) is the second brightest. This is SonS, guys supposed to be an expert. Needs to go back to level 1 EQ ear training in reality. Apparently he's never heard a dark piano in his life. Also mid sized Steinways and Yamahas sound incredibly similar and 99% of people saying otherwise are being Steinway snobs, I'd love to see them pass a blind test. Much like with other pro-audio most people claim to hear things that they don't. When you test them on it they fail.

Honestly, I feel I wasted 20 minutes of my time! Learning about microphone placement and mic types is through listening to the recording, which is not shown in this video. BTW, if the piano recording at the beginning (and end, even though he talks over it) is with the mic placement he explained at length, I must say it sounded terrible!

Jacob Harley This!! Great video. Nice explanation, but being geared toward sound guys, this lavalier on “autogain” is below any pro standard 🤷‍♂️.
