Here is a video about recording live drums in the acoustic jazz idiom. I do this on a regular basis in the studio for many different types of jazz projects.
I show you the microphones and setup I prefer as well as demonstrate the drums live.
The mics I am using are:
2 Neumann U 89i Condenser overheads set to Cardioid
4 Schoeps CMC-6 mics with the hyper-cardioid capsule on the snare toms and hi hat.
A Shure Beta 52 on the bass drum.
The preamps are Grace designs.
There is no compression or equalization is used in this video.
The drums used in this video are 1982 Gretsch Centennials.
18" x14" Bass, 10"x 8" tom 14" ×14" floor tom.
The snare is a 1950's 14" x 6.5" WFL Ray McKinley Drum.
The cymbals are:
20" Paiste Traditional Flat Ride
18" Paiste Traditional Flat Ride
21" Istanbul Agop Jazz Ride
16" Paiste Traditional Thin Crash
1950's K Zildjian Hihats

Thank you, thank you. The common 'youtuber' style of making instructional videos feels like many of them have lost their ability to be genuine people on this platform. Thanks for your real human approach without all of the flashy editing and forced drama. Very refreshing. Now, excuse me while I unfollow a bunch of yelling youtubers with ExTreMe thumbnail pics. I have seen the light.

Nice. Jazz drumming is the only drumming that can stand alone by itself, without anything else and still be listenable. Dig it.

Have you listened to African drumming interpretation on the Drumset? If you've not, then you should take time to explore some African rhythms then you might wanna reconsider if Jazz drumming is still the only drumming that can stand alone. 😊

Thank you so much for this information. I was wondering where do you place your kick mic for this type of recording? outside and closed skin I imagine?

Great video thank you! ... If you were recording live jazz, with say a trio or quartet, would you use same setup, or would things change to adjust for other instrument bleed?

Hey Rick, just a genuine question, since your video description seems a bit confusing to me: you're saying the cymbals, that you used would be old K's, but I see one or two flat rides with rivets and your Istanbul Jazz Ride in there. Could you kindly tell me what kind of flat rides those are? Thanks in advance! all the best to you. Your sound is superb and your playing is incomprehensibly beautiful

I apologize for asking this unrelated question, Rick . . . But, I've been dying to ask you this: Years ago, when studying with Joe Morello, did you ever get a chance to hear him play violin? Just curious.

No, I did not. He did tell me he gave that up at a young age after he heard Jascha Heifetz play but he might have been kidding.
