Grabbed a bunch of sounds with some Mikro Usi microphones going into a Roland R07. I had the mics strung through my jacket as an experiment. At the end of the vid I discuss whether I liked the set up or not.
Shot with a Go Pro.
Shot with a Sony RX100

Glad you enjoyed it. They are really nice mics that can improve the quality of a handheld like a Sony m10, d100 or the Roland R-07.

Agreed, the sound here is impressive, I like how you show at the end how you ran the microphones through your jacket. I’m sold on the mikro usi now. This is definitely more full bodied and detailed than what I would get using the built in mics on my R-07.

@@dvs3131 I just ordered mine. I am not going to record into handheld recorder but into a mirrorless camera. I will see how good it is :)

Hey! Thanks for the video. Very good sounding. I've been reading a bit about these mics, and I read there is a version (the Usi) that are slightly bigger, but that seem to perform better in terms of self noise. Did you have any chance to try them out? I'm fairly new to field recording, I'm interested in knowing your take on whether the difference might be negligible for nature recording (although quiet) - the mikroUsi are certainly more compact, so I'm a bit unsure on which ones to get. Do you think there is use for both Usi and mikroUsi and what would that be the difference scenario which would make them a better choice respectively? Thank you!

I own the Usi Pro’s (xlr) and the Mikro Usi’s (1/8th connection). I like them both. I pair the Mikro Usi’s with my Roland R-07 and it makes a super quiet rig. The usi pro’s I have paired with a mix pre 6 v2. The usi pro rig I have is quieter than the mikro Usi’s but you can still get a great sound with the Mikro usi rig. Plus you can get sounds in more complicated places where you don’t want to be noticed. Personally it is hard for me to recommend one over the other. But if I really had to pick a first rig I would pick the usi pros but only if you have a good recorder. Preferably with a 32 bit recorder (sound devices mix pre 3 or 6 v2 or a zoom f6) cause they are pretty sensitive.

In this video I actually just held them in each of my hands about two feet apart. I often experiment with the Mikro usi so I suggest just listening to them and move them around till you find a sound you like.

Great sounding, very fine and big open space. I guess you had to do a lot of research before finding these mics... Do you think they're the best for field recording ?

Thanks! They are the best quality mics at that price point. You can get better but it would cost more. I like them because they are cheaper but clean so you can take risks that you would not take with $1000+ mics. Like leaving them rolling outside over night.

Is that mic rain resistant?

Not really. I often protect them with wind protection and some of my clothes.

They seem to handle water pretty well. I left a set out in the forest in Costa Rica a few weeks ago, and an immediate downpour saturated my windscreens within about 10 minutes. They were completely drenched, and it made my recording useless. But the mics were fine.
