Well done, Steve! This tutorial is as close to perfect as it possibly could be. Here's some feedback on why I think so. 1. Listing and addressing the types of unwanted noise in a recording. 2. Encouraging the audience to experiment with no-cost solutions to reduce noise, blankets. Being creative is more important than being perfect, specially when you are starting out. 3. Showing what a gate is and how to use it in a free plugin. You dont need expensive gear to just start. 4. Encouraging the viewer not to be lazy and edit the track to cut out sections. 5. Encouraging the viewer to capture multiple takes, put in the hard work, to get better results without needing to spend a dime. Work ethic and commitment to quality over expensive gear. And finally, I love the fact that every single video is focused on encouraging people to be creative and brave and engage in learning the craft and community. Well done buddy.

I was discouraged, because I moved back to my childhood house, from a house where I had a room where I used just some blankets to record, here I have not one room, and I'm facing the street, so not only people walk by and play loud music, there are some parakeets that are yelling all the day, and if that's not enough I got a fridge in the next room that makes a loud noise at night.. And the reflections of my voice in the walls. I was feeling like it's over. I have a room where only my bed and some stuff fits, and its quitter at night. So I'm planning on getting my laptop up there even tho it's uncomfortable. Thing is, your message hit my heart, I almost start crying, so thanks a lot, sir. ♥

Great video. I haven’t checked if you still make regular videos (that’s my next stop) but I subscribed and hit the notifications. I sold all my gear a few years back and miss it. So, I ordered the essentials to scratch that creative itch again. Road noise is a bit of a problem here, I’ve never experimented w the gate. Seems similar to strip silence. Thanks a ton for the quality information!

Cool. Straight forward, no chaser. I like that. Also, don't know if you have another video that addresses this, you can actually run 10 seconds of clean background over and over again underneath your vocal track so that when you mix them down there's no noise and you still have the background if you want the background of course. Great tutorial man.

One thing I've learned is not to worry how sounds sound by themselves, but how they sound in the context of the song. You can listen to almost any acapella vocal tracks of songs and hear some other noise creeping in. The way I see it, if I can't hear the background noise in my monitors, my 3 pairs of headphones, my pair of ear buds, my phone speakers or my car speakers, I'm not too worried about anyone else hearing it. And as someone who samples a lot, I've also learned that sometimes the extra noise that you don't want at the start, actually adds to the song. Not sure about vocals but more than once there were little sounds that concerned me at the start when creating a melody out of samples, that actually became an important sound in the song. I know because sometimes I go to remove it and realize it sounds better with it. So unless it's something that sounds out of key I just let it be until mixing then decide whether I want to keep it there, remove it, or just remove it from certain sections. Sometimes the most random sounds can add life to a track. Especially in modern electronic music. Anyway, learned a lot from this video as I'm just now getting into vocal recording and live on a busy street. But I did get a decent mic. The AT4050 so hopefully I can make this work or at least as good as I can get it to work where I'm at til I can set something better up.

I couldn’t agree more. Depending on the kind of noise you can get away with a lot and some sounds can really add to the vibe. Sometimes we get lucky!

This is great stuff. I don't have dedicated audio software - up until recently I was content with still photography. I'm dabbling in videography a bit, so this will definitely help when I'm working with the audio tracks. I'm still very much a noob and I'm okay with that. But even so, it appears the audio portion of Davinci Resolve is quite nice. Lots of stuff there I haven't even tried out yet! Surprising VERY budget shotgun mic I'm using is a Comica CVM V30 Lite. Not pro level gear but leaps ahead of the built-in mic on my DSLR. Not too shabby at all for $50.

Definitely better to use acoustic absorption panels than reflection filters and especially the Kaotica eyeball - colored my voice wayyyy too much. I’ve found better to have panels around you so the sides of mic and behind the performer’s head and leave the back of mic open when using cardiod - it leaves some air to voice. Don’t go for completely dry vocals, but balanced. A major point is to not get too close or far from mic when recording - about 12 inches work for me.

Great video. I'm shocked you can get such great results with an ac on in the background. How much noise does it register when recording because I couldnt hear it one bit or tell your voice had a gate stopping it. I have had an issue where my pc fan is killing the quality of my vocals. I can't speak naturaly and have the noise floor be an reasonable level. By the time my voice get to around -18 db the fan noise floor is around -40 or so... id think id need it under -70 or so to nk be heard in the recoding but then my vocals are whisper quite... ibe been producing for over 10 years and vocal tracking has killed my joy for making music. I hear less talented and seasoned producers tracking better vocals with ease and ik still yet to figure out why mine sound so bad at the same levels... any help or suggestions would be appreciated big time. Id even be willing to make a video and send it out to show you what ik facing to see if you have any suggestions. My pc is older but I really don't think the fan should be picking uo thay loud if your able to have a ac on and still get your voice to sound the way it did. Thank you for ant help

Love it, Steve. I’ve found the only post-processing that really works in taming room reflections is a multi-band transient designer like the JST Transify. Find your worst mid-frequencies and pull the release way down. Maybe turn the attack up a bit to retain those frequencies in the vocal, but it really has saved a lot of my vocals.

Hey Steve! , my first time stopping by and I want to thank you for your words of encouragement. I really needed to hear it. You asked for comments so here goes...You keep it short, simple and to the point,. You have no idea how refreshing that is when time is not on your side. I do have a question that maybe you can answer. I don't have a dedicated room to record in so every recording needs a ton of post (Audition) But I just used a high end Blue cardioid mic w pop screen and got a squeakiness to my vice. Kinda like i was chewing on a balloon. I have heard it before but though it was the recorder. Any idea what could be causing it? Usually around the F or ph sounds. Thanks, Rob in Dallas

The gate only works between the vocals, in the empty spaces. That's not a perfect solution but it helps because the actual vocal will tend to mask the background noise a bit. Did I explain that in a way that made sense?

Can you tell me how should I record meditation audios in which I have long silences? What type of mic what type of setup, what type of editing? I have been using Dolby digital app & it's been pretty good for noise cancellation but not 100%. I record at home and there is a lot of traffic horns, some even at 3 am. :(

+alternate Me that’s so tough. I did some Meditation dialog work and it’s tough to get that quiet. Hide the noise with ambient sound like rain.

@@SteveInTheMix thanks for answering Steve. I just discovered the dynamic mic. I guess that could really help. Plus I figured I could record in my car in my parking or try some other things. I'm going to give those a shot. But I'm a starter in recording stuff so I will be on budget and will be recording directly in my android phone. I shortlisted 2 mics- Behringer xm8500 or shure sv800q (this comes with XLR cable). Could you tell me how I could connect them into my phone? I mean what kind of adapters would I need? Thanks a ton! Hugs!

@@SteveInTheMix There is a commercial laundromat next door. Trucks, air compressor, not hearing anything through the Frisby FA-7910M mic. Two setups: 1 with Neewer 48v, cheap USB soundcard 2 FocusRite Scarlett Solo with gain set below clipping Setup 1 I use for work due to software limitation. Sounds ok. Setup 2 used with Audacity. Sounds excellent. Better result than with BM-8000 as that picks up noise from across the street.

Hav any good hacks/DIY to block white noise on Android audio recordings?

Not really. You’d have to get the audio out of the device to process it in a DAW.

Maybe you just want to get a simple vocal mic that is more directional.You could probably find a used Shure SM58 of a Beta 58 for a good price. You want a cardioid pattern mic. That will pick up what it's pointing at, you, and not as much of everything else. Hope that helps.

I’m having a problem with CRICKETS! I can take out those high frequencies with the EQ but then the guitar doesn’t sound as bright as I want it. HELP!
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 3 жыл бұрын
+Starlyn Morel oh man, that seems like a tough one. The crickets have so much of a time to them. Maybe eq the top end down a bit like you did and try to add some back with an exciter. That will manufacture an upper harmonic and make up the high end. Not sure that will work. Just an idea.
