Recording Vocals In Logic Pro X in 5 Easy Steps
www.steveinthemix.com/
🎤🎶😎Pop and Urban artists: Here is a 5 step method for recording vocals in Logic Pro X. That's right, just 5 easy steps. This mostly applies to Apple Garageband as well.
I'm gonna suggest what boxes to tick, how to set up your preamp and get recording in as non-technical a way as I can think of.
The Steps are:
1. Set up Logic
2. Cable your mic and preamp
3. Preamp settings
4. Channel settings in Logic
5. Setting up to sing to a track
instagram | / steve_in_the_mix
When making records I use Logic Pro x, Ableton Live, and Pro Tools.

I have Protools 10HD on the older “Lion” side of my Mac tower, however, I bought some awesome new plugins that only work on the newer “Sierra” side so I wanted to record in Logic instead of making the tracks only, then restarting the computer to get to Protools to record on said track. @SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 3 жыл бұрын
It starts with choosing the right mic for the singer but I know that is not always easy to achieve depending on what might or might not be available. See if this makes sense to you. Divide your vocal into 4 zones. 1. Below 200 or 300 Hz. This is plosives and mud. You don't want much. 2. 200-300 to 1k. This is warmth and size. 3. 1k to 10k. This is presence and clarity. 4. 10k and above. This is pretty and shiny. Focus one the balance between 2 and 3 and you'll be working towards a warm vocal with presence. There are aesthetic choices to make here and this is a thought concept more that places to put your eq exactly. Multiband compression is your friend here. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/fp6WpKWY0rnQnoE.html

Excellent tutorial Steve. I am thinking of buying the software. Does it do a good job of removing the vocals completely from a mono as well as a stereo track? Does the sound quality remain good after the vocal is removed?
@SteveInTheMix

If you mean Logix Pro X, it is not particularly designed for that but any daw can host that kind of work. I've not had a lot of success doing that with a result that I like but haven't really spent much time on it. The best results I've heard have been when someone takes an acapella and puts it out of phase over the full mix.

Hi there, great video. I’m wondering, as I’m new to logic... what’s the best way to stop noises other than vocals coming into Logic Pro (slight breaths etc?) ... it’s tough enough to get rid of. I use a usb condenser mic without an interface as it’s not needed (gain and headphone icon on mic) - or would I be best getting something else like the Rode mic and just drop the usb mic?
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 3 жыл бұрын
Long term upgrading you’re mic would probably help but I also spend an extraordinary amount of time on records editing breaths abs mouth noises. It’s tedious but the payoff is great and you find you get quite fast after a while.

Hey Steve! When recording vocals or a live instrument, where do you monitor from? In Logic what stage am I listening to, and how do I set that up? Or do I monitor off a stage of my interface (UA Apollo)? Thanks!
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 3 жыл бұрын
Yo Larry! I like to monitor through Logic and not on the UA software if I’m using that. If you can use a buffer of 128 I doubt you’ll notice any latency. That way you can add reverb or delay via send when you’re recording. Don’t put anything on the master buss or you’ll get latency. I usually record vocals to a 2 track if the session is getting big. (No extra plugins) Computers are fast and I figure why make it complicated.

Hey Steve, great tutorial, straight to the point! Just wanted to get your advice, I have a Rode K2 with Kaotica Eye Ball, hooked up to a Focusrite Scarlett 2I2 USB Audio Interface and to a MacBook Air, Im running logic pro x. I tend to get some noise in my recording, pops and clicks and also some plosives. Do you recommend using plugins like compression, eq, noise gate etc while recording? What could be causing those pops and clicks? Thanks
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 4 жыл бұрын
Zeal Static that seems like it would be a pretty good setup. Plug-ins won’t help with noises on the way in. It depends on if the pops are acoustic like mouth noises or lip smacks or if they are electronic. If electronic there is a problem there and you might want to try another interface just to test. I also have a scarlet for portable work and it’s great but I have had to replace the usb cable because the connection was unstable. Could also be the mic cable. I’d look at those first.

@@SteveInTheMix Thanks for the advice, the noise is from pops clicks and lip smacks rather electronic

@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 4 жыл бұрын
When you're recording it's nice to have the option to turn the music down so if you are recording to a 2 track you could just pull the fader down or group of faders if you have many. You could also put the music into an aux and use that fader to adjust the music up and down. Getting a really crisp vocal is a process and tough to answer in a comment so I'm planning on doing a video or two about that. Thanks for leaving the question. I hope that helps. Let me know.

@SteveInTheMix

AESTREA aestrea that’s called latency and is caused by the time it takes to go in and out of your computer. In the audio preferences try making the buffer 128 or smaller. That will help. If you have more than a few plugins in your session that will make the delay longer as well. I usually make a session with no extra plugins just just for recording vocals.

daksh vats It really depends on your voice and the mic you’re using. Sometimes a little 10k will help the vocal feel more engaging. Maybe try 2 or 3 dB boost there as a staring point. Sometimes taking out some 250-400 can get rid of a boxy sound. Does that help?

If the buffer size is just the speed in which things go into and out of the computer as you suggest, wouldn’t a higher buffer size be faster? I had a Focusrite 18i20 and they recommend a buffer size of 512 and they mention the speed of the computer writing files and a lower buffer will cause lock ups etc. I returned the 18i20 because i couldn’t get it to work properly, I have a PreSonus Quantum 2626 now and it works perfectly at 128, well I had one hiccup as I was using a USB-c cable which wasn’t a USB-C Thunderbolt cable, I didn’t realise that the thunderbolt USB-C is higher speed.
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 3 жыл бұрын
+Steyer-CRMG the bigger the buffer, the longer it takes to fill. Think of it like a revolving door with two halves. A small buffer fills in a short amount of time and then rotates. A large buffer takes longer to fill and then rotates. More rotations take more cpu power. Most modern computers should be able to run at 128. Does that analogy help?

How can I record vocals and piano at the same time through different input. Also what’s the best way to do this? Would it be to monitor through headphones or otherwise? I seem to get a lot of feedback when recording my Aston mic into logic and monitoring from my speakers. Assuming that’s because of feedback loop... any suggestions.
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 4 жыл бұрын
I think you'll get a better result if you wear headphones and use one mic for your vocal and one or two mics for the piano. You can arm multiple tracks at the same time and record on all of them. Having a separate mic on the piano and on your vocal will give you more control for the mix as well. If it's an option, recording the piano in stereo using two mics is always nice if possible. Hope that helps. Lemme know.

Hi Steve. New to recording here... I just purchased a ShureSM78b microphone and I’m having a slight issue. My vocals sound near perfect in my headphones before recording and during.. a beautiful delay, no peaking, an awesome reverb and a really full sound that seems to just be build into the mic... however when I play the vocals back, it sounds quite flat, and seems to be heavy on the left channel. I’m brand new to recording myself so I am unsure if this is just because I need to do all of the EQ’ing, etc after the fact of recording or I am missing something here... cheers!!

Hey Liam, I’m happy to help. That’s a good mic and you should be able to get a good sound out of it. Do you know if you’re recording into a mono channel? That’s what you want to do. I have an episode about mono vs stereo that I can link to if that might be your issue.

If I am using a bluebird mic, plugged into a focusrite, plugged into my laptop with logic prox, do I still need a pre amp for the best vocals for recording in an open type area? Mic has a noise insulator and pop filter as well. Thank you so much!
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley, I'm not sure which Focusrite you have but pretty sure it has a built-in preamp. If you can turn the input level up and down then it has one built-in. A better preamp won't make much difference as it pertains to the environment. It sounds like your biggest challenge might be where you are. When you say "open," do you mean outside and what issues are you running into if anything?

Thank you so much for responding! I am in the living room so that I can watch my twin toddlers while I record demos. A special room or large closet isn’t compatible with daily responsibilities as of now. When it’s time to get vocals more perfected, I can make a temporary move to a more insulated space. I started with GarageBand and upgraded to logic and without making any changes you’ve suggested in your video, the vocal sounds totally different. It’s almost like the bass of the voice is gone. I am going to apply your method tomorrow and see how it sounds from there. If you have any other suggestions, I am listening for sure. Thank you and happy to have subscribed to your channel.

Hi, thanks for a great video. I think I noticed red in one of the readings. Is this what they call clipping? Is it important to avoid this when recording? Also, I’ve heard don’t shout close to the mike, but how do capture the energy and volume of the vocalist if he’s far from the mike.
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it’s generally good to stay out of the red. I usually suggest trying to peak at -6 to -10 when recording. Being close to the mic is usually good and will change the tone as you get closer or farther. I’d suggest the width of two hands from the mic as a starting place. Use the preamp to adjust the level.

@SteveInTheMix

I'm not familiar with every monitoring system but I think you already know that you need to monitor only through your direct software. When you click the [I] you are listening through Logic and depending on your buffer size you may experience latency. You could try reducing your buffer to see if that helps. In that case, you would no longer use your direct monitoring. You can't really use both.

I’m having an issue with my mixer set up. When I go to record my mic, it picks up the tracks that are being played through logic. My set up is a Yamaha mixer also used as an interface. In the mixer is my MacBook, a mic, and a keyboard. When I go to record my vocals, it almost doubles the music in the background INTO the vocal track. How do I stop this?
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 3 жыл бұрын
I don't have a Yamaha mixer so can't quite tell you exactly but it sounds like what you're hearing is the full stereo mix from your console being recorded onto your vocal track. Make sure the input for your vocal track in Logic is the direct out of your mic channel on the Yamaha mixing board, not the stereo out of your mixing board. Make sense?

Steve In The Mix How do I do that? Lol. I tried to work with it last night and I was noticing the volume of the recorded microphone was very low even when I’d turn the volume and gain up on my mixer. In logic, the track was a flat line, no peaks or anything.

@@creativite.productions I haven't ever used that mix Erin so I'll have to say I'm not sure. What you need to search for is direct out from the channel your mic is plugged into. I know that's not a specific answer but that's what you need to figure out.

If you have a closer look I'm hitting about -6db on input. That leaves a healthy amount of headroom I usually suggest peaking between -10 to -6 on the meter. It’s really obvious where I move away from the mic for a powerful section when I listen back to a vocal recording. Is this something that can be fixed in Logic X? Should I not be moving away for these notes? It makes them sound different and far away if that makes sense? Even though the wave form shows the powerful sections are still a bit louder than the rest.
@SteveInTheMix
@SteveInTheMix 5 жыл бұрын
+originalvonster there is a definite proximity effect with most mics. You might be better off to turn your preamp down and sing the strong parts close to the mic. The sound will tend to be more consistent that way. I usually ride the preamp up and down to keep the level consistent instead of moving farther and closer to the mic. Does that help?

I’d suggest staying between -10 and -6 that way you preserve the transients. Also, if you go over or under a bit no big deal. Don’t go to 0 because if you go over you’ll flatten the transient. Adjusting section to section is pretty normal. Hope that helps.

Muddy Ruckus I use a target of -10 to -6 for everything. Recording level is not a reflection of how loud it will be in the final mix.
