It threw me off the first time I saw it too, but this recording makes him sound a lot higher pitched. There's a recording on KZfaq called Shostakovich Speaks with Rozhdestvensky preserves the sound better, although he his a lot older.

Can anyone who speaks French please translate what Messiaen was saying? I’m very curious!
@vnesme
@vnesme Жыл бұрын
1st excerpt : (not Messiaen) "...and C ; that is to say, the 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 first measures up to the crotchet without breathing, that would be perfect, wouldn't it?" Messiaen : "if need be, they can breathe after the 4th quaver." 2nd excerpt: "[...], bassoons, contrabassoons, all the deepest timbres of the orchestra. And this theme seems to be welling up from the ground, welling up from the deepness" 3rd excerpt: "[...], clarinet, flute, play this theme melodically, in a quite simple and stripped down way, with no harmonization whatsoever, as a monody."
