Great video Kim. You are quickly becoming a real life experience pioneer for this injury. I am in week 13 of my recovery now and meet with my surgeon in 2 days to find out if I get clearance to start rehabbing the actual hamstring. Can't wait. Fingers crossed I get good news. Thanks again for doing this. You are awesome :)

Thank you for sharing your experiences. My best friend will have a similar surgery in about a week. She just found this out from her surgeon today, so things will have to fall into place quickly for pre op, etc. The sooner she has the surgery,the sooner she can start the healing process. It is scary thinking about the surgery for sure. It is necessary in order to have a better quality of life. Thankfully she likes and is confident in her surgeon. Thank you to all the other folks who have commented as well.❤

I am thankful I found your page! Thank you for sharing your story. My surgery is tomorrow. I too am very active and had pretty much gotten back full mobility after the accident and I will be starting from scratch tomorrow. How many weeks was it after you tore your hamstring that you had surgery? My surgeon doesn't use a brace afterwards, but your experience of wearing the brace makes me want one...to feel more secure post surgery. What type of brace did you have?

Thank you so much for sharing your experience, it is fantastic to see how people have overcome this difficult injury! I recently tore my hamstring (8cm off the bone), ACL, and MCL in a nasty ski accident. I am currently 6 weeks post-op from the hamstring surgery. I just took off the brace and I am very slowly weaning off the crutches. I had a painful suture abscess and infection from weeks 4-5, but thankfully, it looks to be clearing up now. If all goes well, I will likely have the ACL surgery at weeks 12-16 post-op and then will have a TON of PT for the next year. For those who have just had surgery, it is tough not doing much, but it does get a lot better! Week 6 has been a huge turning point! Currently, sitting still feels uncomfortable for long periods of time. Do you have any recommendations for office chairs that might be a little more comfortable to sit on? I have looked at purchasing saddle chairs, but I can't tell if those would be better or cause more discomfort. Thanks again for sharing this experience, really helpful and encouraging!!

First off I have to say I am a triathlete and 68 years old. I have never had surgery before and I am really scared. I have 4 children and 8 grandchildren and expecting number 9 in November.I completely torn my hamstring just from wear and tear. I found this out after racing in Texas for 5 days straight and a MRI. I did do the PRP treatment just to see but i knew it wouldn't repair the damage. After confirming if I wanted to run again I would need surgery. One major concern in September I was competing on the USA triathlon team in Spain. So my surgeon decided I could if I did PT. I did PT 3 times a week for 2 hours each session June to September. I had a great race for having a torn hamstring. On October 6th I had surgery which will be 4 weeks tomorrow. The ice/compression machine was the best investment. I had thew ice brace along with the hamstring brace on for 10 before taking it off for a shower. I removed bandage after 7 days and put a new one on just for a day. Very nervous about the incision. Took a shower at 10 day because I didn't know how to take the brace off. The shower was heaven but I need advise on how to put both on. 2nd shower made me cry because I didn't realize how much muscle I lost. Surgeon said it will come back guarantee ha ha. PT started at 2 weeks. I go twice a week for 1 hour and then do the exercises at home everyday. I still wear the brace while walking outside and to bed. I use the ice machine at least 6 times a day and 2-3 times at night in bed. The ice and compression will help with the healing process. At 6 weeks I'll see the surgeon again and will get rid of brace and crutches. At 4 weeks I am still waiting for the incision to heal so I can swim or at least pull. Next week is week 5 and I will be able to walk on the tread mill. So and steady is very hard for me but I am being obedient. After surgery I didn't take any pain killers I only took theTylenol and just for 4 days. I really was lucky I didn't have been more soreness on the incision area. Putting on pants was tough I haven't tried socks yet. Doing better going up and downstairs. Advise listen to you body and do what the surgeon and PT say. I want to swim, bike, and run but I know if I want to compete again I need to go slow. I am lucky it is off season. I am planning oin comoeting again next October at worlds in Malaga, Spain.

Fellow triathlete here (28 years old), who is now 6 weeks post op. I totally agree that the atrophy in the leg is really tough to look at, but I am staying optimistic that I will come back stronger than ever. As an active person, it has been very very hard to do nothing with this injury, but things are finally looking up! I also need ACL surgery (will likely get it in April once I am 3 months post hamstring), so I am resigned to the fact that my 2024 season is over before it started. Hoping to come back super strong in 2025 and will maybe see you at Worlds in 2026!

Great video, just had my surgery 2 days ago… must say similar experience pain wise just dull ache not severe pain. Was way worse when injury happened. I think you nailed it in saying the fear of putting weight on or hurting yourself again is the biggest. So nerve wracking going about on crutches you just can’t explain why you have this fear but you just don’t know what you’re capable or not capable of in certain situations. Like climbing stairs, going to the shower just being totally dependent on your crutches … the anxiety is tough. Just feel like I can’t wait to straighten my leg. I’m not wearing a brace dr’s advised it’s not required. Just have to keep knee flexed 30 degrees.

My surgery was on 9/12 (writing this on 9/17); thank you for doing this! So helpful! Here’s my 2 cents: The Fanny pack and grabber are for sure must haves! I did use the prescription pain meds for the first 48 hours - wished I had started Miralax sooner ;) but prune juice seemed to be most effective (for those who took opiates, you know what I mean…). As far as sleeping, I have had the opposite where I have felt more comfortable sleeping on my side and just now ready for my back. I had a side sleeper knee pillow from CVS that has been great (looks like a triangle with rounded edges). I have been nervous to take off my brace too cuz I’m not sure how it works to put it back on a again but I’m cleared for a shower as of tomorrow and can’t wait for that! All the best to you!

I'm 15 weeks post-op. Been getting around pretty well since 7 weeks post-op ( gingerly at first, quite nirmally now). Been doing PT since 7 weeks, gradually, and progressing, so far. My issue is, although I can do lots of exercises with no pain, there are times when seemingly simple little daily-life movements (like "scootching" in an office chair to adjust positions, or shifting the blankets in bed while you're in it) will cause a sharper ache. There is practically no guidance or literature on this, and whether it's normal to have those occasional sharper pain sensations or whether it means the tendon reattachment didn't "take", or what. The PT therapists (and this is from a reputable practice) just don't have a lot of familiarity or experience treating proximal hamstring reattachments ( as opposed to "normal" hamstring tears where the tear is of the muscle rather than an avulsion). Can anyone speak to this?

Thank you for the hamstring roundup! I am 6 weeks post opp and I was wondering if you had any pain at the incision site, at the back of your knee or burning sensations on the back of your hamstring? My incision was six inches wide due to the retraction. I just started PT at week 6. After two sessions, I started feeling really confident. The PT said if I feel like little baby steps (more like shuffling) is what my body is saying to do, to go ahead. I did that for one evening, just in the kitchen, like you, and I woke up with every part of my leg hurting. Major set back. I want to run like Forest and get the brace and crutches off! Thank you again for your detailed videos! They have been so helpful and I'm so glad that you at 14 weeks you are feeling more and more recovered.
@kimberlykinch

Hi! I don’t have pain at the incision site, but directly underneath it is still a bit sensitive. Is your incision going vertically down the hamstring? The back of my knee does get tight sometimes, but that’s more muscular feeling, and I had some hip flexor issues as well around weeks 3-6. There’s a lot of imbalances happening that we don’t realize because other muscles have to take over. How much longer do you have to be on crutches ??
@user-mm5vr3zc8o
@user-mm5vr3zc8o Жыл бұрын
Hello Julie-My incision was 7.5 inches and runs horizontally beneath my left cheek. Like Kim I tore all 3 tendons directly off the bone (6 cm retraction) due to a slip and fall. Not much happens with pt during weeks 6-12 as your tendon is still reattaching itself to the bone. I go to hands on PT 2-3 days per week and spend the majority of my time utilizing laser therapy around the wound to simulate blood flow and A-stem treatment (which does not feel good by the way) to break the scar tissue up. I do some PT exercises but they are extremely light in nature. Burning sensation for me was not uncommon at this time as your hamstring went thru a traumatic experience. Your hamstring will definitely let you know if you push it too much. My advice would be to take it slow and focus on wound repair (which is tough as I am an active person so the sutures fully cure to the bone). You will get there in time just try your best to be patient.

Forgot the crutches part. My Physical Therapist and surgeon say it should be around 3 more weeks to have both crutches and brace off. Since this surgery is so rare for both of them that they are heavily depending on my body's reaction to each step as there are just rough guidelines for recovery. Thanks again!

Wow! 10 weeks and all your strength back, that’s impressive. Did you start weight training before the 12 week mark?? I’ve never experienced burning, but a small area of skin above the incision is still slightly numb at almost 1 year post op. My surgeon said that be forever or take years to go away, because it’s nerves in the skin that are repairing. The “golf ball” sensation when I sit is mostly gone now.

I hope you find the right doctor to help you! There are some good outcomes with our surgery, so I'd have a good discussion with your surgeon.

My surgery is next Tuesday. How did you sit after surgery? I’m already struggling to sit now. Do you use a special cushion?
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 10 ай бұрын
I was able to sit on chairs by leaving the injured side hanging off. Sitting up made me feel more normal and not as sluggish lol.

I had surgery last week. It was a pretty painful experience so far. The brace is very uncomfortable. Post op doc said I’m healing well.

Aw sorry to hear it's been painful! Yeah the brace is a little strange, I got used to it and actually felt more secure with it lol. Hope the rest of your journey is smooth!

My 50 year pld husband is facing this surgery. What about the "hip contraption?" And you can sit?????

What’s the “hip contraption”??? Lol, the brace? And yes, I was able to sit on my barstools, but in the beginning my surgical side was off of the seat. In the car, I would have to recline the seat back a good amount. It got better with time!

@@kimberlykinch I had surgery 2 weeks ago. The worst part is trying to sit! Does the sensation get better? I feel like I am sitting on a small hard ball. I am so active. I am shocked at the healing process! Thanks for your insightful videos! Very helpful

@@cherylgrenga3717 sitting is one of the hardest parts! I still have a very small amount of that ball sensation at 10 months post op. It’s hardly there, hut I can still feel it. It’s one of the most annoying things about it all. It gets better with time, so I’m hoping within the coming months it goes away completely!

Keep the toilet seat! as your knees start to go, it's a lifesaver. We just keep it on the toilet and everyone that comes over asks where they can get one. We are remodeling and are going to install new toilets that stand 6 inches higher in the master bath. They are getting easier to find in big box stores.

I think the medical sys let me down. When I was injured I saw a surgeon for a consult 9 day after injury. I think he sand bagged me I was nervous but up for surgery with in 10-12 days. well week after week came and went, after 6-7 weeks i had an MRI. 9 days leter a consult with surgeon that advised No surgery. I guess the window had closed on my surgival option. he gave me a note for lots of physio.. so I have been going for physio 3 times a week for 4 weeks today was the end of the 3rd week. I met with the wcb occupational therapst and he gave me some exercises and suggests 12 more weeks of physio. at least im climibing stairs up and down, sitting on toilet seat and walking without a cane.. Best part is that I booked 4 magic shows so I will have some cash flow the last 10 days of November

Did you have hip flexion precautions? Were you able to sit on a toilet? Was your knee brace locked out?
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 11 ай бұрын
Yes. I was in a hip brace that went down to just above the knee. Every couple of weeks my PT would adjust the degree. I sat on a toilet the day I came home from surgery, yes. Actually I sat on the toilet right after surgery 😅 - with the help of a lovely nurse! But yeah the toilet was difficult for a while, but I was able to hold onto things in order to sit down and i sat sideways on it lol.

So, were you non-weight bearing? Could you stand?. When could you stand or walk.
@kimberlykinch
@kimberlykinch 5 ай бұрын
Yep! Toe touch, non-weight bearing for 6 weeks. Gradually throughout those weeks I was able to start pulling a little bit of weight. I could stand, but all my weight would be on my good side. I used my crutches to walk everywhere 👍🏻

I'm 2 days post op. All 3 Hamstrings torn off the bone waterskiing. 5 x Fibre Fibretak anchors used to reattach the tendons. My butt is the sorest, incision along the buttock line. I'm seriously hating the resting and want to get out and about.... no more painkillers now, just have to stop boredom eating 😂 Ohh and sitting on the toilet is the worst!

Yeah the toilet takes some getting used to hahah. I wouldn't have survived without my raised seat :D. Definitely go out if you can! Getting out and getting some sun was SO helpful. Staying inside for days on end would drive me crazy lol.

Sounds like a poor anaesthesiologist. Nausea and throat pain is their job. If you wake up neuseous, you know you got a dud.
