This week we decided to show you the basics of painting a goalie mask for beginners. For this project specifically, our customer requested a basic recreation of Cam Talbot's Ghostbusters-themed mask, with a few of his own touches added to the mix. Get an up-close look at how we spray primer, paint, add designs, masking, and much more to this factory white goalie mask.

Nicely done! What brand paint do you use? I’m a goalie myself, and have painted about 23 masks..I usually sand with 400 , is 320 a better option? Thank you!

GoPro Goalie Uzi - when sanding before paint, depending on what type of paint you’re using, will determine what grit to use. For us we use PPG solvent based paint which calls for 400grir for proper adhesion. Water based paint such as Envirobase calls for 600-800 grit because it is thinner. If you sanded the helmet with 600 and used solvent, it wouldn’t stick, conversely if you used 400 grit with Envirobase you’d see sand scratches because the grit used is top course. Great question. @@SketchsInkTV I was wondering what we should do if we want more of a pencil sketch drawing?not necessarily airbrushing it? sort of like lehner's mask with the islanders. not sure how to clear that

What kind of clear coat would you recommend? I have my helmet completely painted with water based paints but I'm struggling to find a good clear coat

Your best option is to speak with a PPG representative from your area.

Just curio, why didn't you put the CCM logo back on the forehead? Did the goalie not want it? Video quality is insane. You really deserve more than 62 subscribers!

hey im painting my own mask im using 320 sandpaper what kind of paint should i use?

if you're using solvent based paint 400 grit, if you're using water-based paint you would use 600

what's the process and idea behind clearing and sanding before adding stencils and once more before airbrushing? what is the specific clear you use as well?

trent Nesbitt - the reason we clear before stencils and airbrushing is because we want to seal that layer before adding more layers as a precautionary step. If I make a mistake or change my mind what I want to do I can simply gun wash my mistake and fix it without having to start from scratch and take off my previous layers. For example if you were to do a canvas painting and you made a mistake, you would have to work twice as hard trying to “erase” your mistake rather than if you had a way to seal your background layer and only erase what you’re currently working on. Does that make sense? And to answer your second question currently we are using a polyurethane clear from PPG.
