Recreating one of the weirdest reactions

**Reuploaded because I used a clip of BBC footage in the intro and it was automatically flagged by the system and demonetized.
*At the 5min mark, I say 1.5g phenanthroline monohydrate, but 5g is written. It is indeed 1.5g though.
About a year ago, I saw one of the weirdest reactions that I've ever seen. It was called the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction, and it's one of the few good examples of an oscillating chemical reaction. I decided to try and do it myself, and this video summarizes the process that I used.

I like how the waves don't seem to cancel each other when they overlap. They turn into each other. I'd like to see it pushed through a double slit and measure the interference it creates.

It's so bloody awesome to see a real-life (and totally O.G!) reaction-diffusion (RD) reaction! So cool! I've been very inspired by BZ for many years myself as well. Self-organization / pattern-formation is an utterly fascinating phenomena! I am not a chemist, but have played with digital simulations in this realm a lot (examples on my channel).. and I wonder whether it might eventually be possible to find a real chemical reaction that supports moving solitons (sorta the RD equivalent of gliders) or even just a chemical version of Gray Scott RD (which already contains moving/spinning solitons for specific values of parameters F and k). Sounds potentially complicated but I think that could be a really cool thing to explore! Love your work, huge ups!

very interesting never seen this reaction before. Got a question. Can you try this with another wavelength? Maybe it could looking crazy with infrared or ultraviolett light Another idea is to try this in darkness with a fluorescence powder? it´s maybe not possible because of separate reactions but maybe there is a inert powder available. After watching this 20 minute video about this specific series of chemical reactions, I can VAGUELY understand what's happening, but what purpose does it serve.. besides the cool patterns, what does it do? Does it makes rockets fly faster? Is it some kind of stain remover? Does this have anything to do with how zebras get their stripes? Who discovered this and what were they even doing? Lol

KZfaq is an incredible platform for learning. I think a lot of people (eg: me) are quite visual learners, and just by being exposed to explanations by people who know their stuff and also make it interesting, information sticks over time and you start to be able to build on previous things. I started about a year and a half ago with electronics videos, barely remembering V=IR from highschool, and when I first started I was lost quite a bit, but picked up little bits at a time on several different channels. I now can understand just about any schematic shown and understand and can follow along complex topics. I'm hoping to get the same for chemistry, as my one university clsss I took on it had a lousy professor and it has always kind of stuck in my craw. As the OP said: I may not have fully understood the exact formulas and mechanisms of each reaction shown, but the general idea of reduction and oxidation reactions cycling, as well as the idea of diffusion producing the wave effects made enough sense that I had a decent picture working in my head. Cool video as always.
