Inspired by Peter Kuran's work in creating the title for 'The Thing' in 1982, Tommy and JP show you how to create this gorgeous title effect for yourself.
Don't forget your respirators!

What a great channel. I might as well suggest. Could you replicate Back to the Future 2's flying cars, as it was in '89? I know the really deep details of how they did it but I really wanna see the process in action.

Recreate the "Hell Sky" effect as seen in Ghostbusters and Childs Play. From memory the FX crew would put dye and flour into water and film it in slow motion then superimpose it on to the sky of the shot? Great video guys!

Hi there! I actually did this effect for "The Thing" back in 1982. I used a large fish tank to contain the smoke, instead of filling the room full of smoke (and chasing everyone out of the building). I did use garbage bag plastic, but I stretched it over a frame and positioned it with a c-stand. As you can see, the fire could get out of control and you don't want to attach it to a flat or something that could catch fire. Also, I remember using a 1K light for the source. I made the title with a cel and black paint and attached it to the back of the fish tank. -Pete Kuran

Mr Kuran!...so honoured to have you with us and comment on our video. Yes, we went about things in a fairly dubious way (before we invested in a Fishtank etc) but we did ensure that enough fire extinguishers were standing by! We are huge fans of your work and it is safe to say that you are one of a select few who have inspired us to create our KZfaq channel and celebrate some great practical effects, as well as hopefully inspire newer filmmakers to look at practical and in-camera solutions for their projects. Best wishes!

Hello Mr. Kuran. I love the effect of the title burning onto the screen. I was thinking of doing the same thing for the symbol of human transmutation from Fullmetal Alchemist, except using red lighting.

Great stuff. Can't wait to see what you produce in future. And as you asked for practical effect requests - the AT-ST walker head being crushed by logs (released by the Ewoks) from Return of the Jedi. If memory serves they metal coated the plastic model, used acid to eat away the plastic core leaving a perfect metal shell, then hit it with 2 model logs filled with lead. It crushed perfectly.

Back lit graphics (rediscovered today digitally with the Stranger Things look) was how I made money as a college student in the mid-80's. Instead of vinyl stickers, you'd get a high resolution Kodalith negative film made from your black and white artwork, which was clear in the white area, solid black in the dark. Far nicer (more dense) than the digital transparencies you get today. For smoke effects we'd use a large aquarium between the camera and graphic, filled with smoke. I remember doing a "Bonanza" style burn through on some artwork for a local car dealership using very similar techniques!

You guys did an amazing job. I had tried to recreate this effect back in the 80s with a super 8 camera when I was a kid. I had read in Cinefantastique magazine about how it was done. My logo was just cut out of a piece of black matte board with a hobby knife. For smoke, I had a bunch of cigarettes poking through the lid of an empty tennis ball can, the other end of the can was taped to a hose of similar diameter. My friends
