Good morning, Phil. It’s Sunday morning and once again I am having my coffee, watching at least one of your videos. The rectangular winged bowl is very, very nice. There is nothing about it I would change. It sure sounded dry during the turning. I had my fingers crossed that the inclusion hanging out there would stay put. Glad it did. Really nice piece! I’m nursing a nearly busted face after a bad catch last night, turning the inside of a bowl. The tool caught and the handle tried its best to take out a couple teeth. Learning curve! Be well my friend......

That piece of Maple was waiting just for you to create something useful and appealing Phil & your distinctive methods of constantly checking & thinking your way through to the end payed off. I think we are beginning to see & enjoy your signature style evolving as we follow you on your journey. Very nice spalting & general features makes this one very pleasing to the eye & I like the Howard’s wax finish very much, gives off a nice surface sheen but doesn’t overpower by being too shiny. Yes, another fine piece from Shady Acres. Greetings from a cold & snow bound U.K. Definitely won’t be out in my shop for a while longer, no heating, so I’ll be staying indoors in the warm enjoying watching others (like your good self), & a few more, listening, learning different approaches and thinking of the day I can get out & make some shavings of my own. All the best, Geof

Phil that is a spectacular piece of wood and a great turning. I like everything about the bowl. The best is the one end with the big gap. Pretty brave and controlled turning to pull that off. The spalting is amazing and love how it surrounds the perfectly good sound looking maple. And of course what would your bowls be without the perfectly placed bug holes. Crazy but I processed that cherry I got Monday and was cutting the center slabs and thought...hey this might make a nice winged bowl like what Phil made in the past. .Loved the whole video and process. Howdy Phil Fantastic looking piece.... Funny how something Spalting and rotting can look so nice . nice unique design . I too don't like hand sanding...... Done that been there..... I use my Ryobi detail sander a lot . I thought the little finger like piece was going to fly off at 1200 RPM . I think that black is part of the spalting . All the other black is . Type of fungi . Fistulina hepatica (beefsteak fungus) . There is also a blue type of Spalting . Nature can do beautiful things . beautiful piece ....
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
Mornin' Bruce! I think you are absolutely right about the black edge being spalting. I thought about that after it was done and that's the conclusion I came to, also. I have one of those Ryobi detail sanders, too. Why didn't I think of that! Thanks for your great comment, buddy! Phil

Thank you, Huw! I don't usually show the buffing because I use cloth (oh no!!) and when I do show it I get nothing but comments about how dangerous that is. I think if you know and compensate for the dangers, it's not dangerous at all. I just hold the cloth, (all folded up, nothing hanging loose) at a high RPM against the piece. That's pretty much it! Still watching the video-- love the stream-of-consciousness narrative style, how you keep us right there in the process --but I have some questions concerning the sanding wheels you're using: How long will the grit last (how often do they need to be replaced); What sizes do the wheels(?) come in; Where would I go to find these (search params)?!
@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop5 жыл бұрын
The sanding wheels (Sand O Flex) have refills that very in length according to how heavy the grit is. The finer it is the longer the refills are because they take up less room inside. I try not to know how long they last because they are kind of expensive to replace. I can only say I don't fill them often. Also, I don't use them on every piece, it just depends. I know that's not much help. I guess I fill one every couple months? Also, I have several of them so it's even harder to keep track. Sorry, just not much help, here, Dave. Phil

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Very helpful! I will be ordering some, definitely, but there are other priorities that will take precedence. Darn. But I love what you have demonstrated on live edges!

Oops, I forgot about the other questions! Dang, I'm getting old! I've purchased most of mine from eBay. I have found one online source for the newer, plastic wheels. I kind of think these may be better because they are lighter and easier to use. The metal ones I use are model 350R. I think the body is 6 1/2". Here is where you can find the newer plastic ones. I see the price has gone up a little from just a couple months ago. www.supergrit.com/view.php?pg=products/products_woodworking-sandoflex Phil
