If you have MS and are wondering if the recumbent bicycle 🚴 is better or worse than the stationary bike, here’s 4 things you need to know:
1️⃣ The stationary bike is the most functional if you have a goal of walking better 🚶‍♀️ because you’re more upright… which is more similar to the position we’re in when we’re walking and climbing stairs.
2️⃣ The recumbent bicycle is less functional because you’re sitting down in a chair and slightly reclined - HOWEVER, this can make it a bit easier and a great stepping stone to using a stationary bike.
3️⃣ Both are great options for leg strengthening & cardio 💪🏻, but that strength often won’t carry over to improved walking… unless you’re also practicing functional walking exercises 😉
4️⃣ At the end of the day, the best one for YOU is going to be whatever is safest & most doable for you!!

I can’t sit on a stationary bike. I just fall off as soon as I try n pedal 😂

I tried using a stationary bike, but it hurt my butt, even after weeks of trying to get used to it. The recumbent bike was comfortable, and as a result I am able to get a much longer workout with it. I'm doing it just for cardio, as I do weight lifting separately.

i love the recumbent bike! easier to get into, more comfortable, holds my water/towel better, and i can watch things on my phone while using it. the positioning is more casual so it's easier to do high resistance for 30-60 min compared to the upright one where i'll lose my form a lot quicker on an uncomfortable seat

I have to use the stationery. After sacroiliac, hip, and back surgeries, it's the only one I can sit on without increasing pain quicker. Also, balancing! Loved #4 that one was the one I needed to hear. But, thanks for the info to look for functional exercises for walking!

Thanks for explaining benifits of recumbents are for I can only get my heart rate up on spin bike I use I can't seem to get hr above 100 on recumbent while my legs are burning. I think with recumbent there harder to recruit more muscles than the upright

Recumbent bike for men as regular bike seats puts too much pressure in crotch area, and studies have shown it reduces blood flow and increases the risk of erectile disfunction.

I did walk better when I could still make it to the gym; my hips rotated and didn’t cramp as much. But the bicycle seats are so painful. Is there a resource for getting wider and softer seats?

I believe there are resources where you can order different seats! The average bike seat actually isn't ideal for the female body. At this time I don't know have any product recommendations for this, but I'm sure there is something out there!
