I recycled two old bed frames for future projects, taking them apart using my plasma cutter and metal chop saw.

in the town i live, there's a material recycle store, like if good will and home depot were combined. i buy bed frames and chunks of granite leftovers from peoples countertops. i weld the frames up into small coffee tables and use the granite for the table top. my next project is to build a plant stand. just fun hobby projects that i can give away to friends and family

I get at least two angle iron bed frames every month from a local apartment complex. There are always people moving out and tossing these things. I have also scavenged several sleeper sofa bed frames from the same apartments. That's typically a bunch of usable round tubing. I have made several benches using this scavenged steel.

We broke a metal triple bunk when taking it down a few years back. I refused to dump it. Thanks to a neighbours handiwork and ingenuity, it (along with an old single bed spring base) is now a lovely swing in my back garden. I'm just getting the rust of it and giving it some long outstanding tlc at the moment. My favourite place for a cup of tea on a summer's evening watching the birds! Would love to see what you do with it.

I also use these all the time. The best way to cut these is the wiz wheel on the Grinder or friction chop saw but keep in mind some of these can be very hard like spring steel and can get a little brittle when welded so don't use this steel for anything that could be life threatening like overhead or hand rails. And what ever you do don't cut these with a cold saw they can wreck the blade quickly!

You don't actually need more than 1 chuck for the angle grinder. Put one prong in a hole and move the other prong to put pressure on the lock cap and it should come right off. Might save you a minute or 2 instead of looking for a specific tool you can't find

I like to use a plasma cutter to cut the rivets out and cut the legs off , basically cut the stuff. I use it to drill holes in it because drillbits do not work. I made planer tables and other things. Easy to fine and you get lots of it.

Just to clarify, you use a plasma cutter to cut it and to cut bolt holes into old bed frames, because you can’t drill into it using a regular drill bits (for steel). What about cutting it with a grinder?

Good idea about using this steel as a cheap source of angle iron, just be aware that due to the high content of carbon and manganese I only recommend welding to advanced welders with proper techniques to treat the welds so they don't become brittle, this is the reason ALL bed frames are riveted NOT welded. Previously made a video where I'm testing the properties of that material after hardening test pieces and comparing properties there after... Have fun and be safe...

I’m very curious about recycling old bed frames. I would like to make custom L Brackets. Can you advise about tensile strength? Send me a link to your vid. I understand it’s very strong, is that true? I don’t intend to weld it, but I would like to cut it and drill holes for bolts. Your opinion on this would be greatly appreciated.

I tried heating to a yellow and air cooling to temper? before using a sawsall w/ milwakee metal cutting blades 18 tpi. It didn't seem to help at all. I will try drilling them today, any suggestions?
@pierresgarage2687
@pierresgarage2687 4 жыл бұрын
@@brianburke7440 One problem with sawsall is too high of a speed, it burns the blades, also make sure those blades are Bi-metal or HSS, regular carbon steel won't last, for drilling good HSS or even better with cobalt bits, not too fast and some cutting oil should do. As for annealing or softening, you may need to go way higher than straw color, let cool in vermiculite or a blanket if it's the only possible solution to soften it, and, even soften it's still quite demanding on cheaper cutting hardware... Hope it helps you, Pierre

I use a small grinder with a regular stone wheel, not a cutting wheel, then take a nail punch and pop the rivets out. Same as yourself, take a few seconds. I have made an old trunk using bed frames, mounting the wood on the inside angle to it looks solid. I have also taken a flap wheel and ground the paint off real quick, brushed on a mix of one part white vinegar, one part bleach, to rust the metal. Did the same to some short carriage bolts (mostly the head) so when you mount the wood from the inside, they look like huge rivets from the old days, and your trunk looks like an old chest. For end handles, you can use horse shoes welded together, or find a store that sells big metal rings. Thanks for posting your video brother!

Thumbs up. I do this all the time. I have about 200' of bed frame angle iron waiting for me to do something with it. I've made tables, a stand for a table top hockey game... all sorts of stuff out of it. If you use a course flap disc it grinds those rivets off a lot faster than a grinding disc. If you're concerned enough about safety to wear a face shield, you really should be using a guard on the grinder. Bonus thumbs up for using a Mastercraft angle grinder. I have 5 grinders and three of them are Mastercraft. I buy the 7 amp ones when they go on sale for $20 or $30. They work just as well as my more expensive Makita and Milwaukee. I have a Princess Auto grinder that works OK but the switch sucks. I dunno where you are in Canada but I'm in Edmonton. Check out my channel. Take care and thanks for the video.

Of course being spring steel you’ll probably go through 20 drill bits to drill a hole in it. If they didn’t make bed frames out of spring steel afterwhile the frames would warp. I thought great free steel. I think I’ll pay the price so I can have some thing I can actually drill through. It is hard as tool steel

As Leon Rookey stated in another post, heat the area up red hot where you need to drill then let it air cool. You should be able to drill it. I have not tried this yet, but it makes sense.

This video has taught me not to believe everything I see on the internet. I built an awning to cover a small space out of bed rail , after welding and getting the project ready to fasten the metal sheathing with self tappers, I noticed that NOTHING can drill through this material. That’s because it’s a very hard carbon metal. Usually made from recycled rail road tracks. There’s a reason why almost all bed frames are riveted together rather than simple welds. This metal will not accept any structural weld. They can literally crack off with the turn of pliers.
@pierresgarage2687
@pierresgarage2687 5 жыл бұрын
You're right about welding this material, it's around .6% or plus carbon and .8% manganese, without the proper welding technique the weld area will become dangerously brittle, as you say using fasteners for assembly will be a safe method to employ. To be able to drill holes in it use some HSS with cobalt high quality bits, ordinary cheap carbon steel bits will just dull out on the first hole... I made some more elaborate testing myself in order to know what I'm talking about... 😉

Pierre's Garage Your wrong , I have 2 gates welded together using nothing but bed frame steel using a 100 amp stick welder . They are extremely strong and braced and are holding together well . I had no problems cutting , drilling or welding it . All the recovered frames were different sizes and the thickness of the frames were the only issues but for zero dollars to obtain , can't complain . I also made my patio table and shelf frames for my work sheads and an out door fire pit out of the stuff . Not trying to dispute your commit or be disrespectable in any way , I just don't have any problems using it .

I've had trouble with the T rails of garage door openers being very brittle after welding, but not bed-frame steel. It's very possible different types of steel are in use for the same product. People who run steel furnaces don't empty out the furnace to make one thing and then fill it up with something else to make the next run. Obviously they don't want to waste money by making it over specification, but there is a spectrum of alloys in the output. You can always make trashcan steel or rebar for Home Depot out of the poor quality stuff.
