That's a real man. I don't think they make those anymore.

God rest his soul. Red did more for the oil and gas industry than probably any other individual.

Red & my Dad were friends. Red had a greeting for my father, "Hi Jack you old Son of a Bitch". He was the only man that called my Dad a SOB in my presence & not have to fight. Paul L. "Jack" Tolar worked in the Oil Patch his whole life, finishing up with Halliburton as a Well Completion Engineer. Red attended Dad's funeral & asked my Mom if he could do anything for her. Red & my Dad were two of a kind, rough on the outside but a heart of gold.

In the mid-70’s, between Chatom, AL and Yellow Pine, MS, on “Uncle” Jesse Williams place they had a well blowout. Red and his crew flew in on a helicopter and got out to survey what was going to be the best way to extinguish the fire. Red walked towards the blaze, turned to his employees and said, “Tell him not to turn the engine off, this won’t take more than a few minutes and we’ll be heading back to Houston.”

I'd probably have known nothing of Red Adair had he not been brought in to deal with Piper Alpha, in which 3 of my friends lost their Dads, my primary school being full of rigger's kids. One of my best friend's dad survived it and said Barry, my other best friend's Dad, turned to him after fighting thier way through blazing corridors to the side of the rig and said, well brother, it's jump or fry pal. They both jumped. Barry didn't survive the impact on the water. I remember my friend being told at school her Dad wasn't coming home. Crazy shit. i was 11 and i remember it clear as a bell.

I grew up in Northridge California and in 1974 The mountains to the north of our neighborhood were mostly owned by Getty uil. That year there was an oil derek blowout fire, It burned for about 2 weeks. Red Adair put it out. for some reason I remember they had to re-light it then put it out again. I was 8 or 9 years old and this thing was very loud and could be seen from my elementary school as well as my house which was a lot closer. I cannot find any info on this fire. Anyone know about it?

i don't recall the event, but the most likely reason they would re light it would have been because the formation was releasing h2s, a REALLY poisonous gas, & burning it was the safer option.
