Cool! Very cool! Brings back memories, first time I ever saw Star trek in color was 1971. I had just returned from Vietnam, and was stationed out at Fort Lewis Washington. We got new neighbors at the apartment complex we lived in in Tacoma, and they had a color set. One night they invited us over for drinks and Star trek, wow and I thought Spock was green! Ah well can't have everything I guess, but a year later we had saved enough money to afford a small color set, so I could see all my favorite TV in color!

Also, the white rectangle that lights up on red alert is actually a transparent piece of acrylic, and not white at all in the original series!

...and the grill looked more like it was the same colour as the bluish bezel around it, but for a toy, it's pretty good. Some of the other official ST toy props have been pretty dire in comparison.

Cool toy and nice mod. I have one and use it to make the "swoosh" door opening / closing sound when someone walks into my office. My back is turned away from the door when I am using my computer so it lets me know when someone enters.

The way the prop worked on the show was the red button was the alarm button. you pushed that if you wanted to sound red alert. Just like a fire alarm pull station. The square acrylic block is clear frosted and lights up red as the alarm is sound. It stays illuminated and usually does not flash. The smaller white button is pressed to activate the intercom. It is pressed to both initiate a call and to answer a call. What appears to be a small white sliding button on the frame of the speaker was actually an indicator light on the original prop that would come on when the white button is pressed to indicate the intercom is active. It might actually be easier to construct a more accurate one from scratch and use just the sound chip and create your own circuitry. Wish I had the time and skill to do it myself.

There was also yellow alert. Not sure if there was a sound associated with yellow alert, but that light would flash yellow during a yellow alert. The red led actually was a on/off thing. When the button was pressed to talk, it was lit. It would go off when the button was released.

Fran! You have to make one from scratch that is accurate like the 2001 Space Odyssey panel! I'm not a super nerd but I grew up on the original Star Trek and would absolutely love to follow along and build one of these with you! I know a bunch of people who would LOVE this as a gift if it was true to the show! Could it be done with random sound effects triggered by motion sensors?? Maybe an arduino 3D print project? You could shorten the run time for a red alert to 3 or 4 bursts. Could have several sound announcements, could use a Star Trek soundboard for ideas...... The possibilities are endless.... Hack the one you have and then build a better one!

I took the speaker out, and extended the wires so I could mount the speaker inside my room. Then I mounted the unit outside the door so it could be used by someone to "hail" me from outside the room when the door is closed. I set it to the "door whoosh" sound for leaving/entering the room. The red light instead of a button to activate red alert, and the non-illuminated red alert visual indicator also bugged me, but I just left that as is. Roddenberry.com used to sell a really nice, accurate replica of the prop that you could build and set up to function properly, but you would have to cut the wall for it to mount flush with all the electronics. Cool video! Thanks! :)

We visited the replica Star Trek set in Ticonderoga NY in April. One of the com panels was broken, and our guide told us that Shatner had hit it a bit too hard on one of his visits. They were trying to decide whether to fix it or replace it and display it with a plaque. :-D I guess Shatner still likes to get his Kirk on when he's there.

Setting the swish for the motion detector, the red alert as the modded red button, and ship call on the white button would be a really cool setup. If the motion detection can only toggle between swish _or_ red alert, it'd be an interesting project to retool the motion detector and red button to toggle a flip flop circuit to the desired state and signal the sound.
