Red Country feels so different than all the rest of First Law to me. It's the black sheep of the family. The odd child. And I love it for that.

Just finished this today. Not going to lie, after having read the original trilogy, Best Served Cold, The Heroes, and now Red Country, this one has probably been my favorite so far. Actually felt very somber at the ending and was on my mind all morning after I finished it. "I ain't proud o' much but I'm proud o' you." Moving on to Sharp Ends now.

Loved the part when Lamb was holding out in the building at night and you really found out who he was

I enjoyed this bad boy too. Love a bit of western style action. Don't forget the short story collection Sharp Ends Marko!

I haven't read Abercrombie yet, so thanks for the recommendation to read in publication order. H has so many books, it's hard to know where best to start.

Loved this book too. Strongly recommend reading the short stories. Super quick to get through and it enriches all of the previous stories.

Red country is a nice change up. And the bit where Lamb looks through his fingers at Golden is just glorious. One of my favourite Abercrombie moments

Red country is not my favorite of his books but I still enjoyed it, but I am on the trouble with peace now and it is absolutely fantastic it might be my favorite book of his which would make it my favorite of the year. Hope you like the new trilogy because I am loving it!

Ordered the box set of this, Best Served Cold and The Heroes and cant wait to dive back into this. I read the First Law trilogy in 2013 so it has been a while. Aside that, solid review! You literally made me convert to mostly grimdark books instead of just dabbling in it like I used to. Great channel!

While it is my least favourite Abercrombie, it's still leagues ahead of a lot of other Fantasy books I've read. Some of the short stories in Sharp Ends did make me appreciate Red Country more in hindsight so maybe my opinion will be more positive on a re-read.

Red Country feels like an homage to Deadwood, Spaghetti Westerns and Larry McMurtry westerns. Nicomo Cosca is always the MVP! Sharp Ends is really worth the read if you love the First Law world, and its characters! Btw, I don't think The Shattered Sea trilogy is particulary "YA".

I’m definitely on the side of loving this one. I thought it was the most consistently funny book of his. It also might help that I love westerns, I didn’t find it slow at all. The Dragon People also adds to the lore of the world, which Is also good.

@@slowlyred2082 The Heroes just wasn't for me. I loved BSC and Red Country a lot. Best Served Cold was the fastest I ever read a book. I think it only took me a few days. But then I was on break from school so I had a lot of time to read lol. But I don't understand why so many people love the Heroes maybe I'm just not a war story person? But when I say that people say "First Law is just one big war story."

Yeah BSC is very fast paced, especially for Abercrombie. Absolutely loved every bit of it. I really loved Gorst in Heroes, but couldn't stand Finree
@currangill430
@currangill430 2 жыл бұрын
@@slowlyred2082 I'm the opposite. I hated Gorst as a POV. I loved Finree. When Finree put him in his place I was like "thank god." His obsession with her was just too much. It felt really rapey to a point. I really only liked the POVs of Finree and Calder. I really did not care for anyone else.

Thank you for your review! Which of the stand-alones, do you think is the best? My favorite Abercrombie character is in the Heroes, so I am not really warm on Best Serve Cold and Red Country. But you got me curious about Red Country by saying that it is the best plot. I just finished The Wisdom of Crowds and needed comfort food to get over the disappointment.
