My girl is almost 27 and I’ve had her since I was 5. Dad brought her home in a Dixie cup and now she’s a monster. Very true to the video about them being friendly and social. She walks around the house with my cats and dog and will follow me as well. Great pets but more time consuming with tank care that I think leads to a lot of them being abandoned and rehomed.

@@HC-ur9no I just make sure to mop well after she does her walkabout. She's not out all the time. I can see where its a concern if you have children that crawl on the floor but as long as you clean well and wash your hands after handling anything turtle related it's fine.

My RES name is Ninosa. She’s about 11 years. She’s very spoiled and sassy. Loves to walk around all over the place and since my husband has been working from home, she won’t leave his side! She’s even made an appearance at one his zoom meetings. This might sound weird but I think she even knows his schedule! She gets out of bed at 7 am and goes straight to his desk and waits. I love my RES so much!

Sir, they can live to be over 70 years. They don’t stay small forever. And the last turtle that had teeth died 160 million years ago. Everything else said is legit. But I had to laugh at the “teeth like other turtles” 🤣🤣🤣 I live on the gulf coast and we have these everywhere. Turtles have always been my favorite animal ❤️

I accidentally have 4 of them- 😂 My parent bought me 2 for my birthday but 1 died at young age and because I was afraid the other one going to be lonely, I went to buy a new one. And so, one say I let them bask outside and the original old one ran away. And so, seeing how the new one was left alone, I went to buy new one.. At first I planned to buy only 1 but then I saw that the pet shop got only left 2 and one of them are very small. Very very tiny. It was as tiny as 50¢. And I was really worried about that one, like how is it going to survive? What if the one who bought the little one can't even take care of it? (funny how I can't even take care of mine and yet 😭) and so.. I bought the 2 of them together.. And now, I have 3 of them. 😂 Fast forward to a month later, my mom was cleaning the trees in the yard and she saw the long lost original turtle. He was small, as small as the first time he went missing. I guess he didn't get to eat anything.. And so, now I have 4 of them together. 😂 And no worry, they all been doing great. Especially the little one, he grown up so well that I feel like a proud mother. 😭 Been having them since September 2020 +- 2 months for the new ones. And I love them so much too. I planned to dig a pond for them at the yard but then again, I'm quite worried because there's sightings of the big lizards around the yard.

As long as the temperature of water isn't too high (best around 25~26°c) and she has a good and warm(35 to even 40°c) basking spot which she can reach easily, climb and rest on, red eared sliders tend to bask around 2 to 9 hours a day. I have a 12 year old male slider and he wasn't interested in greens too, you can try stop feeding for a couple of days and then offer some veggies and leave it in the tank with her. If she didn't touch it again, try to scent them with some fish or her favorite foods. Mine now eats everything for 5 years! Good luck!

I have somewhere around 50 RES and the only greens they eat are water hyacinths along with there turtle pellets and koi food, they like salami, beef/steak, chicken, hot dogs, rats, gophers, fish(they hunt the little ones at night) and donuts. Get the picture? in there official description the word glutton is used. Offer them anything, either they will eat it or not... But not too many donuts. Remember they are cold blooded so they don't digest when cold, if they are basking they're likely ready to eat. The little baskers...

Hello, if you own a turtle, a great idea is to put in the water a bird mirror, I have had my slider for over 30 years, I was worried that he was lonely as I worked 10 hour a day, I put a three sided bird mirror in the water and he stares in it just like a bird would, he spends hours a day playing, sometimes snapping at the mirror thinking it is a real turtle, this was the best idea ever, the mirror just sits at the bottom of tank and he does what he wants with it, it is 100% safe as bird mirrors are protected in plastic, he is happily amused for hours a day, please try for yours, you will be amazed how much they love it, he never gets tired of playing with it

Obviously this was our fault for not paying enough attention and leaving them in an un gated area. But me and my sister were both under 18 and my mom had no idea what she was doing. Watching this i feel bad for those turtles and they should not be childrens pet without also being the parents pet

My 2 RES's are adults. The female is older. I've had her since 1989 and it is now 2023 and she is very active and always has been. I had her since I was 9. I got the boy in 2003. He's friendly when feeding but not so much otherwise. I have to fish him out of the 90 gallon tank I have them in. I have invested a lot of time and money making them a basking area above the tank with Mega Ray bulbs and eggcrate (the things people use for commercial lighting ; they are white panels. I had them in a smaller one but as you all know, they are excellent swimmers and need space so I did that for them in 2019, and they have more than enough space. I watched your video and I thin it was good information but mine dont act exactly like you described. My girl ;which I thought was a boy for many yrs is very big ,active, and friendly. My boy is smaller ;yet an adult, but more territorial as males are in this species, scared , and somewhat aggressive. As for diet mine eat Reptomin, Feeder Fish, Crickets, Dry Crickets and Mealworms, Strawberries, Kale, and Carrots. They do not like Veggies as much as meat and fruit. My girl will walk around the house when I take them out for exercise, but the male shies away and would rather be in his tank even though he has been touched and handled since 2003. He's the protector I guess but he needs to have more faith in his surroundings and have fun like she does. I have never been bitten by either one but he will open his mouth and twist his neck to try to get me clamping on his shell with my two hands, whereas my girl is a dare devil and fears nothing and actually enjoys our interactions outside the tank. With that being said I think one size just as children does not fit all, but overall you did a great job explaining. I didn't get them when they were very small and green where they fit in your palm. Mine were the size you have to hold them like a sandwich. I never gave my turtles bananas because I always thought they'd choke and I dont intend to as that is not in their natural habitats neither are strawberries or carrots laying around. I can see in Texico's eyes she's getting older but a healthy RES can live longer than you mentioned in captivity as she was big when i got her versus him. Sunoco is cute in his own way just doesnt like interacting as much , so you will get some RES like him that are just a grouch IMO. I have been a turtle parent since I was 9, I am 43 and my 2 RES's are healthy and happy and surprisingly, I have never taken them to a vet because there are none anywhere near me that deals with this type of reptile; which is a shame being that they are a household pet; and even more sadly that many take years to really figure out how to care for them. Remember I got got my first in 1989 when we didn't have all this info and even with all of this many still neglect (either on purpose or not) these long lived beauties. I wish mine would lay eggs but I never looked into it and always just wanted them as pets

Please make sure he gets plenty of UV full spectrum light and keep his water warm. Not boiling hot...think tropical freshwater. Do you have an aquarium thermometer? Read as much as you can about caring for them. If they aren’t able to bask, they will get shell rot and die. They can’t swallow food outside of the water. They are easy to care for, but there are a few things that they need to survive that other pets don’t need. I wish you the best with your little turtle 🙃

Finally got some expert advice and a proper diagnosis; pneumonia from the frozen prawns he's been fed, and a too-low water temperature. On antibiotics now, slow recovery.

Hi thanks for this info! I just rescued one about a year ago, and was wondering how can i set up a proper environment for it? Currently all we have is a plain tank and a simple filter. And a basking area. Is there anything else I can add to make the tank more interesting for the terrapin?

info common known aquatic turtles aquatic turtles are known to injure each other when they are matured, especially when there is much fosfor in their diet. I keep mine with a divider in the middle where they still can see and smell each other and touch noses but can't chase each other. they grow large, need a water temperature of 25°c else they can develop shield rot, a beach that doesn't scratch the shield that has a temperature of 35°c with UV as they need it for certain vitamins and to warm up as a reptile, variety of food as they are omnivores that contains Red sticks - Small Sticks (special aquatic turtle sticks)- Shrimp - Calcium worm - Dried fish - Mealworms - Amphipods - Water fleas - Silkworms all dried or dead as feeding alive is cruel as they rip apart food - Sepia for vital needed calcium - stomach gravel as they don't have a kneeding stomach, same like birds and no teeths to chew. as last Vitamin powder to be sure they get all nutrition. I use it in dried bugs and insects and fish. shaking it with the vitamin powder in a bag. the powder gets into the pores of those bugs and insects and fish. some of that powder gets off as soon you place the food in the water but there is enough in those pores as long you give it regularly. just keep it in a bag and shake before you feed them. Once the food finished in the bag the left over vitamin powder can be reused with the new food. vary the food per time, don't give a mix of all varieties at once as they are picky eaters and will only eat their favourites in such case and missing vital nutrition. with elder turtles pause a day or 2 once a week. young turtles daily. remove all leftovers after 5 minutes to avoid the water getting sour which is harmful and the turtles becoming too fat. they eat fresh vegetables and fruit and they love it. always research before giving fresh food. for example spinach contains nitrite which isn't good for aquatic turtles. some vegetables bind and neutralise calcium which result in calcium shortage with various conditions as a result and can be deathly. andive, cucumber, waterweed and duckweed are safe to give, the rest research first from multiple sources as there is many misguiding out there. mine don't like andive and prefer chicory instead so it's always a search and what each individual prefers and is safe to eat. all that care is pretty expensive in electricity, water and overal care and time consuming. they can easily get 50 years old. I have 2 rescues for 21 years and learned it all by mistakes and errors over the years. cat food happened to be, in contrary with common info about these turtles, not good for them as it's too fat, contain too much nutrition and is too salty that have a negative effect on their welfare based on the newest studies. rather make a nice indoor pond for them than a aquarium as they can see through the glass and will constantly try to swim there but they can't which result in frustration, stress and escape desire and they are escape artists.

Just adopted a male and female. The guy at the store sold them to me both for $10. He said they were 15 years old already. I just made a pond with a mini beach and a fence beforehand to put them in there. I live in the South where it is warm most the year. I think they will like it in their new home.

What kind of trouble. The safest and easiest solution is to give it a salt bath. It will kill shell and skin fungus. Not trying to lay blame, but its mostly caused by poor water quality and them not being able to bask. Mostly the water quality. You can also put a certain amount of salt in the water all the time, fungus cannot thrive in it. If the water is good then it needs UVA light and throw a tuttle bone (calcium) and get some vitamin drops and put it in the pellets for a kick start
