The same heppened to me. I started to work in a coffeeshop on 2018 and the owner (who happened to be a friend of mine) never gave me the extensive training he promised. We also lacked many things in stock because my boss was forgetful and preferred to do other things rather than be a coffeeshop owner. He was unpunctual, a lier, oblivious of his own mistakes... But one virtue that he had was his natural charisma, so a lot of people liked him. Little by little he lost respect in my eyes and it became harder to work for him. I waited six months for the training, but it never came and then I began to lose interest in my job and feel lots of apathy towards it. I loved the coffeeshop and the coffee environment, but finally I ended up leaving the place after 1 and a half year because I was making no progress and felt miserably. I made one big mistake: I put all my hopes in learning from him, even though I was self-taught in many other areas. A year passed... And one day he called me because he needed a barista for a week, so I came back and ended up staying for whole year and a couple months. But this time I made sure to learn by myself all that I needed in order to succeed as a barista. I created a 250 words coffee glossary, a handbook for baristas, and a training system of my own. What was the result? I became senior barista and official trainer. I trained 3 baristas (one happened to be my girlfriend), but one year later I left again, this time cause I realized that having a boss like that was making me mentally sick and was impacting negatively many areas of my life. I opened my own coffeeshop with my girlfriend and one of the baristas I trained. It's been 8 months since we apertured and at this moment we are well settled. We have a base of clients, delicious beverages ane food, lots of hopes and dreams. My ex-boss no longer talks to me, but that was the price I had to pay in order to keep my mental sanity and grow.

There’s no employee loyalty anymore. I worked as a professional engineer’s apprentice from 2000-2004. The best advice he ever gave was, “Unless they (the employer) are violating your civil rights or safety, get what you can from them then get the fuck out! There’ll always be other opportunities.” I’ve always lived by that mindset and have gained experience that helped me find work in non-related industries.

I remember once skipping work after sitting in the parking lot a long time, deciding to go see a movie (American Sniper, of all things...did not know it was based on a real man amd was not ready for that rather unfair, gutpunch of an ending). As I still lived at home, I couldn't return without the family knowing I'd skipped, so I sat in a Walmart parking lot. It was cold as it was winter, and didn't make me feel better about my life, lol. I usually quit jobs around the time of tax returns when I have some money to get me by for a bit, and that's what I did.

When everyone you work with has to vape THC or worse all shift because the equipment you have to use for your job is always down for repairs . Then you have to stay late every day and end up having to come in every Saturday to make up for lost production . Sure , the Overtime is nice , but what price are you willing to pay for your own mental health and time missed with friends and family ? It’s a daily question of whether it’s worth it . I guess you just lie to yourself to make that check until you just can’t take working with people too stoned to form a logical argument. How long can this be tolerated ? About a year . True story . 😞

I've been told I'm "too helpful" at my current IT job. At first I thought it was a joke so I didn't really change much. Now I've been threatened with being fired for insubordination when people came to me needing help. @@rockon8174 I’m not fulfilled sitting and doing nothing all day because my bosses are too unfocused to find any work for me. This wouldn’t have been a problem if the chain of command decided to pass any orders down. They told me to find improve things were I could. Got told off for doing that without orders despite it being my orders. When my orders are vague and they get mad when I do literally anything there isn’t much for me there. “We offer freedom to our employees to fix issues when they see them.” Gets pissed when you fix an issue without getting told to, gets pissed when you report an error without fixing it, doesn’t get pissed if you never do your job. They literally told us how to work at the helpdesk in case we had nothing to do. So I get bitched at for doing helpdesk when I have nothing to do. Frankly it is hard to respect the arbitrary whims of such a disconnected chain-of-command.

Is this common in the IT world? I had a coworker who transferred to IT and we were supposed to "collaborate" with them because they "owned" (paid for the application we use). My training wasn't complete to take over the spot this coworker left and when I asked for further help or had questions, he told me that he was told he was supposed to be "hands off". Isn't that the opposite of the definition of collaboration?

These are a couple of hard lessons I learned from my last disaster of a job: 1. Your boss/ supervisor incessantly micromanages you then complains about doing so afterwards 2. Puts you on a PIP only after being in the job for a few weeks 3. Disciplines and berates you or any other employees in front of others 4. Has no clear plan on how to train you properly and just decides to “throw you in the fire” as a way to train new employees 5. Openly discusses personal/ private info about fellow co-workers (and/ or about themselves as well!) 6. Talks about how eager they are to hire a ton of staff to help w/ the workload -but ultimately fails to do so 7. Admits to firing someone who had a significant disability (I would also refrain from disclosing any MH disabilities/ conditions esp if you live in an “at will” state) 8. Refuses to acknowledge or work to resolve your concerns/ struggles that make your job more difficult 9. Overly criticizes or chastise you over a small/ simple mistake (esp when you’re still new) 10. Doesn’t offer health insurance and pays you below market value in a recession

Dealt with a similar situation. Job was under paying while advertising false work ads. Claiming to have so much career opportunities. Had to pay for company uniforms. Couldn't provide proper uniforms. Worked during my lunch break. Improper breaks. And any time they tell us there is mandatory training we have to complete. We pay out of pocket to do the training and dont get paid to do the training on our days off. I continued to challenge the supervisors every step of the way. They tried to talk down on me. And told me I was becoming a problem due to me knowing my work rights. I became a target. Caught the main supervisor in a lie. That bit him hard in the ###. Tried to warn them. Gave them a lifeline. They hung themselves. Now the company is being investigated. Facing serious work violations and its not looking good for them at all. They screwed up and it honestly could of been avoided. More concern trying to save a few bucks instead of following state laws. My advice to anyone dealing with a shady company. Research your work rights. Document everything. Time, dates, text messages. Shiw proof that you tried to reach out to supervisors to fix the situation. If they dont care like my old job. Show that to the labor board. Talk to an attorney. The company is now facing a class action lawsuit.

So many days I have even wanted to walk out of my internship. It is part of my degree but it's not paid and it is A LOT of work. Having a chronic illness and being in school and an internship, I have not been able to handle working outside of school. Therefore, I have been literally broke for the last 3 years. For a short time my wife did babysitting. The father of the kids she took care of was super excited to tell us he landed a job as the kitchen manager for the restaurant that a regional grocery store had put in their stores. He said they were starting him a 25 an hour which was a huge pay increase. I immediately said I know of that companies reputation and they aren't going to employ him for long. Sure enough a month after he got the place fully staffed and running they gave him an assistant manager. A month later they let him go and promoted the assistant to his position for 18 an hour. The point of this story is, make sure you look at the companies reputation before jumping at the chance to make a few extra bucks. You might not be there long.

The workload became totally unrealistic, I wasn't allowed any support and I started taking frustration out on co-workers who I previously got on with. I then took that home with me. One day I almost lashed out at my 3 year old and that was it, the final straw. I gave my notice a few days later. Stress will rot you faster than anything else. My fool-proof method of finding out if a job is worth it or not and when it's time to go... The quality of toilet paper in the staff bathroom is directly correlated with how well management cares for its employees. It's a small thing that no one ever outwardly talks about with management and TP is just one of those costs of doing business, but the quality tells you everything. If it's the good quality stuff, like you get at home, you're golden. If they use the cheapest, basically sandpaper stuff, it's time to get the resume ready. If they used to have the good stuff but then downgrade unexpectedly, prepare for layoffs.

When the company VP has anger management issues, doesn't know how to talk to staff, is also in charge of HR and the company president won't take action...and is the reason WHY staff leaves. 3. When everyone wants to be a manager and they nit-pick your mistakes. 4. When new-hires are considered "senior" staff within 6 months to a year of being hired. 4. When new managers quit within 6 months to a year of being hired.

I felt that I have reached my limit and I don't want to live a life where I just look away when something unethical or unfair happens. Doing so also affects how you see yourself, your mental and physical health, and your hireability. If only I didn't fool myself with ideas of "loyalty" and "resilience" I would have improved my career path much, much earlier, and with much better health. When workplace bullying is happening and management does absolutely nothing about it, even suggesting that you are the problem. Bonus points if you happen to be neurodivergent. This was at a job where there were 3 of us who were targeted by the same 2 female members of staff - myself who at the time was a mid-20s female, a male in his 50s, and a female in her late 40s/early 50s; my final straw came when one of the 2 female members of staff was due to have 2 days off but she only told me about it the afternoon before. Problem was that when she was off I had to do her job as well as mine whereas when I was off my job got shared amongst everyone else. Add that to the fact that the 2 female colleagues were practically cackling when they were telling me, I wrote my resignation letter as soon as I got home and gave it to my manager the next morning. She didn't care, and all 3 of us who were targeted had gone within a year of when I joined, me being the last one.

As a company that would preach about the “importance” of mental health, when it came down to a person who actually had issues they would often ignore the person, laughing it off to their face and still forcing the person to do things the DOCTOR/PSYCHOLOGIST said they weren’t able to do to the point in where said person would have full blown breakdowns in front of customers. Not to mention the hours ranging from like 4 hours per shift 2-3 a week, to suddenly working 10 days in a row, one day off and then another 6 days in a row- (full 8-12hr shifts) like come on now. Red flag: too many cooks in the kitchen, figuratively. I do WFH Data Entry. We have procedures to follow (Rule A). Trainer gives us contradictory procedures (Rule B). Manager gives us contradictory procedures (Rule C). Dept Manager gives us contradictory procedures (Rule D). They've literally set it up so that whichever Rule you follow, you get written up for not following the other Rules. Example: we have to enter one freight class for each shipment. Procedures have absolutely no instructions addressing this.. Trainer says take class from Bill of Lading. Manager says take class from Invoice. Whichever class you choose, someone will write you up for it being wrong. Every invoice I enter is a complete crap-shoot, and nerve racking.

Include the trainer, manager, and department manager in an email asking how they want this process done because you are being told three different processes and want to make sure you are doing it correctly. If there are different answers, tell them you need clarification as to whose process you are supposed to follow. If you still get written up or fired, you'll have it in writing what process you were supposed to do and who you were supposed to report to. MAKE SURE YOU PRINT A COPY OF EVERYTHING, because if you lose your job, you won't have access to your job email. At least you'll have proof if they fight your unemployment benefits.

I had a job where I cried most days before going into work because the person training me was so negative. I really needed the job, but I started to think fast food would be better even though this job was at least within my field (chemistry). I finally confronted her (in a nice way) that it wasn't working. We went to boss and discussed my training in the second department I was supposed to train in before hers. It actually worked, then I went back to training with her very successfully. Didn't last a year past that time, but feel I contributed well. Definitely left under good circumstances. Was offered a significantly better job elsewhere that I couldn't turn down. I know I wouldn't have fared as well at the future job's interview without making that effort, and I left that previous company knowing I would be hired back if a mutually beneficial situation came along. So glad I stepped back from that horrible situation to see a way forward. I know many situations do not allow for that, and I didn't think that one did, but am so glad I asked if we could work it out. Win-win even though I wasn't there long. My boss usually had end of the day meetings with everyone and would come out her office 10/15 minutes before 5 then talk to everyone and then me last. This happened almost everyday and I usually ended up staying until 5:30PM. The final stray was me working on a project for a whole month staying til 9PM on Fridays and the project did not progress due to her micromanaging and not grasping the concept of the project, literally, and I had to rework the project multiple times for her to understand. When I spoke to her about staying past 5 and that month I felt that was wasted, her response was I never asked you to stay past 5 and was this something we need to address now or can it wait because she did not have time? I gave so much of my time as an employee for it to end with her not having time for my concerns. Needless to say, I put in my two weeks the next day.

10:25 I just accepted a new job cause of this. I was told I was doing extremely well and am in line for the promotion. They gave some constructive feedback I corrected them. I was then told your nit ready.. waited 6 months kept working hard. No promotion not even a raise. But they wanted me to do more. I took a huge pay increase with the new job I won't be the work horse with good compensation

What about having to put up with a mentally ill co worker who belittles his boss and spreads rumors and pits everyone against each ? He spreads lies across the company and intimidates anyone he sees as a threat to his position. Then the upper management gives him praise and pay increases! It’s sickening. I complained to HR and they told me they took action. Yeah the action was he got another raise and bragged to everyone.

I've been with this T-shirt printing company for about a year now and throughout the year, they always made very insensitive remarks about politics and religion. Since everyone agrees and thinks the same, it's like an echo chamber for them. They know that my views are different, but they don't care and say whatever around me anyway. I do my best to just keep my mind focused on work and ignore them. It just shows that they really don't value or respect me. Now also, I recently hit my 1-year mark of being with the last week and ever since then, my coworkers and bosses have all started to treat me very different. They've become much more knit-picky, mean-spirited and snarky towards me. There's obviously some sort of favoritism going on here because I have coworkers who are in the same position as me and they get far better treatment than me. They all got raises, I didn't. They're all part of inside jokes and know each other's spouses, I don't. It's like being a part of a bad clique in high school and I've become a target. Sorry for rambling, but I seriously want to get out of this situation. I have zero respect at my work environment.

My latest boss was straight up gaslighting me, I had been in the position for around 3 years, he did not seem to know what I was dealing with but pushed a lot of negative speculations which had no hold in reality. I also got a boss that gave no care about my work life ballance, in the end it was affecting my health, so I quit since I can't be working in a place where thuesday morning I feel like it is Friday afternoon and I need my weekend already. Customer service sucks, especially since it is most often the customer service people that do not want to work with customer service who pushes for and gets promoted, and it is a hit or miss if that person is actually capable enough to lead other people.

I left my last employer after stagnating in the role and woke up to it. I feel like I’m stagnating in my current role and looking elsewhere, even into branding myself here on KZfaq, finally. Management and overall turnover is a great indicator (one I’ve seen both in my current role and previous ones, across employers).

I've just resigned from mine because of the weird situation where my predecessor in the job just won't let go. She retired over a year ago, but didn't really want to leave. She was the sort of person who worked 24/7 because she wanted to, and since she left has constantly meddled in my work, openly abused me in the workplace, and has stirred up lots of trouble so that other people treat me badly at work. My employer won't do anything serious to stop her. She's been hoping to get her old job back, and now she probably will. I'm done.

So relevant this week... 8 years 9 months at a horrible , toxic, place. A social services institution of all things. As an Instructor. 8 years attending all trainings, acquiring and maintaining required job certifications, meanwhile mind you part time no bennies ,no health , no dental, not jack. After instructing and getting my company through 2 years of pandemic. Learning how to use and instruct virtual classes on the hell that is Zoom. Suddenly my job is up for full time position ! (benefits, higher pay, etc). I apply for my own job and was told I wasn't qualified for my own job! And of course it goes directly to the younger, less experienced ! I got a full time , 50% pay increase, full bennies, State job the next day . Lit a fire under my ass! I quit ol job 2 weeks ago, yesterday was my last day. Don't look back. Usually I'm hard headed and it takes several of these to compound and force me out. #1: I spent a year as "Acting Manager" of my team. All the responsibility without the pay and it was arguably the most difficult team to run in my division; 4-times larger than any other team. #2 I then went through a period where I had 4-bosses in less than year. And the last boss didn't like me. Up to that point I had stellar reviews. In less than a month Boss number #4 tells me a suck and threatens me with termination of I don't voluntarily transfer. #3 Role they forced me into was not one I was interested in and required a ton of travel which completely screwed up my work life balance. I went from Engineering to Project Management. #4: this happened while I watched as people with far less experience and skill get promoted over me.

I'm a "slow boiler". I tend to be very patient, flexible, and analytical with situations. I often don't even realize that the situation really is bad (instead of thinking, "well, maybe this or that can make it work") until my emotions punch through. They take their time, but once they arrive at the forefront, they're overwhelming. Pretty much my work history is more about cutting myself slack and recognizing how analytical thoughts have subtle emotions synced to them giving me warnings than it is about problem solving the external situation (by the time I have to put serious additional thought in, it's because viable options failed--you're up against people who are determined to make things fail).

Over my dead body! I will fight the demons till my death. I didn’t work so hard to learn all this only to be railroaded with a stupid tracking system. I never knew about intended intended AI based attendance I mean are you kidding me? It’s just you would not believe what I just saw like they have you monitored. They might as well put the mock of the beast in your hand. Well I’m fighting them because I am going to prevail that’s that, and if they fire me because of the stupid three minute tracker literally like the carbon footprint, world economic form, I swear call communist definitely not fabulous. I’m telling you this is sickening and I just saw it and I am not gonna put up with it because I now know why my boss is so damn miserable and he never wanted to get to know me it’s because the turnover is so horrible with this company. It’s ridiculous they railroad you out, but why would they be hiring someone a town over?and they’ve been looking for someone for all very very very, very, very very very very long time? It’s because they don’t train you at all. They had sent you an electronic health record that you’ve never seen in medical office and you don’t even know where the icon is to find a patient OK I prevailed I pulled through with the disability many many of them learning and this is true I’m 47 and I’m not gonna take this. I know what firing means. I know what PIP is. I’m done.

Last minute mandatory OT is really tempting me to leave my current role. Its always the same pattern recently too. We start off the week being told we are back to 8 hour shifts, then Wednesday roles around and its all like lol just kidding now we are doing 10-12 hour shifts with Saturday tacked on too. Oh and as a bonus I'm working 12 hour shifts M-F next week too. Seems like they can't get enough temps to show up or stay long enough so the loyal people here always have to pick up their stack. Don't know if its just this place or the warehouse world in general.

These comments make me realize that I do actually work for a good company. The upper management is nice to us and the benefits are decent. The problem is that the pay is not very good-for anybody, not just for me. I’m in management and making 35,000 which I’m not able to live alone on. I don’t even want to think about the people at the bottom making $11/hr. That is not livable whatsoever and honestly laughable. No cost of living increases either. I did have to start taking antidepressants last year because of the stress, and I do really want to leave, but the problem is I actually think I work for a relatively good company so I’m worried a new job would only be worse and I wouldn’t be able to handle that…

#7 is a big one for me. After I was fired from a job, my boss before that one fought tooth and nail to bring me back, which he did. Later on they laid him off while the company was going through a merger. Needless to say I quit again. This was more than just looking out for myself and thinking if they did that to him imagine what they'll do to me. This is a guy who saved my butt when I needed it the most, batted for his guys every time and I consider a friend.

my last job was great until a reorg happened and I was suddenly demoted "on paper" but given more work in reality. I have a niche skill that is still in high demand so it didn't take long to find another job that pays more. Hopefully the company I work for now won't pull the same shenanigans in the future but if they do, I'll be ready for the next gig.
