Singer 'Red Herring' remains another one of rock 'n' roll's many enigmas. My theory, which is only speculation, is that prolific singer-songwriter Alan O'Day wished to cash-in on the current pop culture enthusiasm for "porno chic" following the 1972 release of DEEP THROAT, but did not want to do so under his own name. A porn pseudonym would make sense since many people in Hollywood went this route when contributing professionally to films that they did not want to be associated with.
O'Day had been working in Hollywood since the early 60s when his buddy Arch Hall, Jr. recruited him to direct and edit the music for a handful of his dad Arch Hall, Sr.'s timeless, low-budget productions including, EEGAH (1962), WILD GUITAR, (1962) and THE SADIST (1963). By the early 70s, O'Day was writing chart hits for the likes of Cher, Bobby Sherman, and Helen Reddy and was simultaneously pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter. He would later contribute music to the early 80s animated program THE MUPPET BABIES! What a career. Why doesn't this man have a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame?
