Same for me! I’m a native spanish speaker and Rosalía’s lyrics in Motomami are mostly cringe but I get that non spanish speakers won’t notice how dumb they are. The opposite thing happened with Rammstein, I only started to appreciate their lyrics once I learned german.

I love that point, actually. rhcp was the first band I ever loved, and even as I grew up and learned pretty fluent english, realizing that the lyrics made no sense never hurt them too much in my eyes. that can't be said for songs made in my native portuguese, where I can't stand lyrics that amount to nothing. one of the beauties of portuguese to me is precisely the poetic nature the language can have, and I can't excuse lousiness. but I wonder if everyone feels like that with their own native language

It’s too soon for me to say, “no greatest hits material” (at least in terms of “best tracks”, if you mean actual hits, then I’m sure you’re correct), bc I’ve only listened to it the whole way through twice, and it’s gonna take a lot more to soak in. Like you said though, what it is, especially with John’s voice and licks back in it, is more than good enough for me, and very comforting. It definitely creates an affect that puts me back in my late teens/early 20s, around when Stadium Arcadium came out, and I couldn’t get enough of this band, but I also don’t think it’s a retread of that old ground, and it’s not merely nostalgia. Idk, for me this is a solid 7/10 after initial listens, and I could see it growing on me. I can see why it might not do much for people who don’t have a certain kind of past with RHCP, though.

John mentioned Anthony’s style in an interview once. He mentioned how his non-traditional approach creates a unique dynamic in the band, and how because he’s not the typical musician he hears different things than most people when analyzing the instrumentals. Yes his lyrics can be silly some times, but he makes the band much more unique, and there are plenty of deeper more insightful lyrical displays from him as well.

Todd in the Shadows made an interesting observation in one of his videos (I can't remember which) that went something like this: when you analyze Chili Peppers lyrics and see that none of them make any goddamn sense, you have to remember that Anthony Kiedis, while a fine singer, uses his voice almost like an extra percussion instrument to keep the song's beat and loose, fun vibes moving more than as an actual lyrical mouthpiece. He might as well just beatbox all the songs, it's a very similar effect. That, to me, is what makes RHCP stand out and it's part of the reason I like their music so much. Sometimes you get a lyrical gem regardless of that like Under The Bridge or Otherside or even Scar Tissue, but you can't expect that all the time. As for this album, while it's no BSSM or even a Stadium Arcadium, it's solid enough that I'd recommend it. I really enjoyed The Heavy Wing and The Great Apes in particular and I can't wait to see them live this summer. 7/10.

Really don’t understand the abuse for AK’s lyrics. The RHCP have always been about funky, abstract lyrics. If you like Apache Rose Peacock and Sir Psycho Sexy, how can you complain about the lyrics on this album? Also, isn’t it nice to hear someone write something original, whether there abstract or not. Modern art is not the same as the Mona Lisa. Both can still be cool and interesting though.
@erickson596
@erickson596 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed! Anthony always has abstract odd strung together lyrics that serve almost like a rhythm instrument but that's the chili peppers, like listen to all their old stuff, it's a trademark, like cant stop. That's to be expected on this album and doesnt ruin it at all for me. To expect anything different would be weird after knowing and appreciating their catalogue.
@sombra1111

Yes! I always thought of Anthony as a surrealist artist painting over these sonic structures in a cool and unique way. The lyrics on Unlimited Love totally follows what has been his style for ages. I don't know why people are complaining this time around. I think it's like a viral thing where a few people mention it and then everybody starts talking about it in the comment sections and forums because it's funny and then it's a popular opinion all of a sudden. People are also accustomed to the older songs because they know them for decades and they forget the fact that there's not even a single "Doo-doo dingle zing a dong bone, ba-di ba-da ba-zumba crunga cong gone bad" or "Ding ding dong dong, ding ding dong, dong ding ding" on the new album. AK sounds as good as he ever did.

Rick Ruben did a two part interview with John and Kiedis. Every band should listen to that interview. How to write music and be artistically heard, without ego 101. John creates a melody with every song he writes. He has no attachment to melody.....it's the way he gauges if the songs will be fun for Kiedis and the rest of the band to flush out. John will only tell kiedis what melody he used to write the song, if kiedis asks him. John has always said Kiedis is the outsider element in the band. Kiedis non-musican approach grounds them. If not for that element, rhcp would of turned into Mars Volta or Disco Biscuit.

Anthony usually goes for a silly, abstract lyrical choice which usually sounds more phonetically pleasing than actually having any deeper meaning. Its almost like he's using his voice as an instrument and just using sounds and words that fit with the melody or groove or funk instead of trying to tell a story. I remember seeing an interview where he said "I prefer abstract, metaphorical lyrics over deep, straight forward lyrics because anything that can be said, has been said in music already. So I like to say something that's never been said before and leave it to the listener to interpret whatever they want". But at the same time he has written songs like Under the Bridge or I Could've Lied that are deeper and meaningful in their own ways. To each there own though, I do enjoy a little objectivity in music reviews.

"Aquatic Mouth Dance" is actually a reference to "American Ghost Dance", a RHCP song of 1985 that has a similar "funky vibe". It's not the first time they revisit this title, when "Hump de Bump" was beign made, the working title was Ghost Dance 2.0 :)

If I have to criticize anything about the album, it seems a number of songs have a better verse vocal melody/groove than the chorus making them feel a little anti-climactic. If Kiedis was a rapper he'd get a pass for the lyrics.. I don't think criticizing Kiedis makes much sense at this point, he's always had wacky lyrics which makes RHCP who they are today. Solid 7.5/10 for me. I agree with the criticisms of it not quite having the cutting edge direction or hooks of albums from their prime, but at this stage of their career it's pretty damn solid record. It stands out as being really refined, balanced and well produced to me.

Recently I read an interview where Kiedis said something like the rest of the band were writing one song after the other so quickly that it became a challenge for him to keep up when it came to writing lyrics to all these songs and eventually he said to himself something like, these are the lyrics I wrote down, these are going to be the lyrics to the song. Now off to the next song. Fortunately for us Kiedis has the ability to sing even the most ridiculous lines and still do it in a way that sounds great and makes sense in the song when you hear it, even if they don't make much sense lyrically, haha. I just think the band got so excited having Frusciante back that they were probably a little too excited and should have slowed down a bit and taken their time more in crafting the songs. They wrote so many songs that they have enough left over for another album. Maybe they decided to release these songs first to kinda test the waters and see how the world reacts to the return of the RHCP. I mean the world's very different than it was 6 years ago when they released The Getaway. And it's VERY different than it was during the previous Frusciante era. And maybe they saved, I guess you could say, the meatier songs for the next album. That's my hope. With that being said, I thought you would have rated this album a little higher but I see where you're coming from in your critiques.

"She's a lover" lyrics are not really obscure at all, you just need the ref point and some research, then they all make sense. Laylay was the Atlantis Manta Ray that was released back to the wild In 2019. It's a reference to releasing something wild and free back to its habitat. Just like the start of the song with the pink flowers on the tree (cherry blossom) something wild and free unless picked. He's referring to the girl in the song and worried if he loves her, if she will still be wild and free. Quite cute really.

Anthony's entire style was to add percussive rap style stream of consciousness wild and crazy lyrics to heavy funk basslines while jumping around. Pure energy. Their musical style has evolved, but the songs have been catchy for this reason. Can't Stop and Give it Away aren't just fun musically, the lyrics add to the poppy, percussive nature of the whole song. No one is looking for deep meanings in them and part of the reason they have that infectious hip-hop like resonance is that they're catchy, he rhymes obscure words together in melodic fashion. It's fun to listen to.

I'd say a strong 6 is fair, for RHCP fans I feel like this album was more than what it had to be. It's got strong sides to it and I feel like some people are really overlooking them and I don't really understand why. Aquatic Mouth Dance has probably the best bass line Flea's written in decades and some f*ckn fun and jazzy trumpets clearly inspired by Miles Davies (which I love but I get that they might be offputting for others). These Are the Ways has the best drumming Chad's ever performed on a record, it's mental actually and the vocals are literally the best Kiedis has ever been able to do. All of that is without even touching John's work which I think is phenomenal with the best cases being on White Braids & Pillow Chair, The Heavy Wing and Tangelo. As a long time fan this is a fantastic album, I wasn't sure at first but man, it's literally everything I wanted it to be. Old school "rapping" Anthony but with reimagined, funky and fun instrumentals. If someone thinks the lyrics are cringy they're obviously not a fan of the band in general since they have literally always been the same and I personally wouldn't want it any other way. When I got the album on vinyl I sat for a good 10 minutes just reading the lyrics giggling to myself. Either you like them or you don't and in this case I really feel like Anthony doesn't and that's fine but I don't want people acting like it's a bad album cause it really isn't.

Anthony always has abstract odd strung together lyrics that serve almost like a rhythm instrument but that's the chili peppers, like listen to all their old stuff, it's a trademark, like cant stop. That's to be expected on this album and doesnt ruin it at all for me.

John makes this album at least a 6/10. Hearing them play together is absolutely great, and hearing Johns vocals over Anthony’s horrible lyrics make it worth the listen.

This is a perfect example of why music reviews are bullshit. There isn’t is a single skip-able track on the album, and this guy is stretching for reasons not to like it. He is nitpicking such minor things that most people would not care about. The actual meaning of lyrics don’t really matter. How many great songs did Queen or The Beatles write that have silly lyrics? If anything, Anthony is the best at silly/funny/unique lyrics, but he can write deep stuff too. Also, I don’t see how any fan of RHCP or rock music in general is not in love with The Heavy Wing or These Are The Ways.

When I was in 7th grade back in 1993, there was this kid that loved the RHCP. He wore a shirt of the band almost every day to school, he would listen to them all the time on his walkman wearing a hoodie so that teachers wouldn't notice, etc. He was actually delighted when his parents bought him a CD of BSSM, an album that had come out almost a couple years back, and he kept talking about it for days. Back then, you actually had to buy physical copies of albums, and they were quite expensive. People eventually got tired of him, he became known as a weirdo and became a social outcast. Gen-Xers and early Millenials were quite brutal with the whole bullying thing, but I never bullied him.

After spending time with The Getaway, which I didn't think was bad or anything... but like... the moment I heard this I felt like they were back to a more classic version of their sound. It felt like Stadium Arcadium days again... which was a phenomenal album. I just love the sound of this album. Again, I don't hate The Getaway, and the one before that I haven't heard that much... but this just feels like they're back to their classic sound while still being fresh and making good music. I love it honestly. I can see fantano's point about the lyrics, but it doesn't turn me off. Aquatic Mouth Dance had me intrigued... yes it's a weird phase.. but I don't mind. Anthony pulls it off. .. somehow.

I feel like you’re letting Anthony’s lyrics bring your enjoyment of the album down too much. That’s really what the majority of this video was about. No mention of the great guitar solos during She’s a Lover, The Great Apes, and Let Em’ Cry. Rather, we just hear your opinion on some lyric. You said it yourself, Keidis has never been the lyrical genius, but it’s not RHCP without him. I’d give it a high 8/10, and I know 90% of hardcore Chili’s fans would rate it similarly

Man, are we really criticizing the lyrics? Considering all the music out there? We are criticizing RHCP lyrics? It is supposed to be fun, and sound fluid. Sometimes it doesn't need to be deep, it just needs to move you and pick up your vibe. The music is beautiful. Think of their best hits, did 'Around the World' make sense either? It's fun prose. Seriously in all the music out there we are criticizing RCHP? These guys are masters of their instruments, they move people, they bring good vibes.

Perfectly fair assessment, Fantano. I personally really enjoyed this album more and more as I continued to listen, and it’s absolutely possible I’m overthinking, but I have a strategy that gives me a ton of enjoyment when listening to Unlimited Love. That name is odd, right? Aside from the overt ones, the bulk of this album seemingly lacks that theme, unless you look at the songs from a different perspective each time. Whatchu Thinkin could be loving your friends on a night out, Bastards of the Light could be a sick love of bar-fighting, One Way Traffic could be a love of removing yourself from mundane life through surfing and car-rides. Aquatic Mouth Dance is a euphemism for giving a lady head, so it’s pretty self explanatory as to what kind of love is being shown here. The Heavy Wing could be about a scorned lover that thought they had it all, but grew hesitant to jump into another relationship once their previous one burned. The title and main chorus, being the heavy wing, could be eluding to the excess weight and baggage being too much to bear, slowing them down before they hit their stride in the final verse. Tons of lyrical fluff in here, but it’s fun so I can personally forgive it. Obviously there’s a ton of tracks on this album, but those are a few of my little theories and interpretations on this album.
