Red is the Rose (Cover) by Seth Staton Watkins
St. Patrick's Day Show House/Livestream tickets: bluestrawberry...
Took a few tries to sing this one without tearing up. One of my favorite Irish ballads and the one I've been singing the longest, Red is the Rose is a melancholy, yet sweet song of love lost, a feeling so many know time and again. Though it pains us, love is worth the cost. So don't close your heart when grief takes its toll. The dawn of another day will always come to brighten the dark recesses of our embittered minds, and herald a renewed hope in all things.
This song is the Irish version of the famous Scottish tune Loch Lomond. It was performed as early as 1934 but was made famous by the oft referred to father of Irish music, Tommy Makem. Since then, many groups have covered it, The High Kings among them.
Lyrics:
Come over the hills, my bonnie Irish lass
Come over the hills to your darling
You choose the road, love, and I'll make the vow
And I'll be your true love forever.
Chorus
Red is the rose that in yonder garden grows
Fair is the lily of the valley
Clear is the water that flows from the Boyne
But my love is fairer than any.
'Twas down by Killarney's green woods that we strayed
When the moon and the stars they were shining
The moon shone its rays on her locks of golden hair
And she swore she'd be my love forever.
Chorus
It's not for the parting that my sister pains
It's not for the grief of my mother
'Tis all for the loss of my bonny Irish lass
That my heart is breaking forever.
Chorus (x2)

I'm going through the exact same thing, brother. Your changing of "golden" to "ebony" struck chord with me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't break down when I heard that. Raise a glass for all the broken hearts out there, mine included. Be well and march on lads

i broke down crying. i lost my best friend, my dog who was also my service dog 🐕‍🦺 🐕 November 23 2022 the day before her 6th birthday. it came quick and with no warning i called the vets as soon as i realized something was wrong. the next day at the vets i was told she had liver cancer and it spread to her kidneys and squished her intestines and some other organs. i was told there was no saving her and even if i had caught it sooner she still would've passed away around the same time. I felt my heart shatter and felt like i couldn't hear i asked the vet to repeat himself and when he left the room to get my buddy i screamed and cried. "NOT MY BABY!!!" Since the day she passed away in my arm's ive called her my lilly flower hear for only a day and gone the next. she never to grow grewy fur never got to really have her golden year's. but i treasure our last hike together. we went swimming she photo bombed wedding photo's and kissed a baby, she was a tru sweet heart till the very end always makeing sure no one shed a tear. ive called her day lilly, my lilly of the valley were we enjoyed playing. Her tribal name was chenoa ayasha tala mosë Translation. peaceful dove, little wolf. moosey. It's coming up on a year and ive gone from 4.5 months of non stop crying nearly every hour to grieving and crying when im reminded of her. this song is absolutely beautiful and exactly what i was looking for, i can close my eyes and relieve the time with my child. i can also feel your emotions in the song and know for different reasons you have also felt pain were you cry and grieve alot. i cant hug you in person. but take as many virtual hugs 🫂 as you need. and thank you for shareing this song. its beautiful

No one should have to feel that pain. The pain of a heart that refuses to stop beating, even when the agony of it slowly breaking is just too much. I wouldn't wish it upon anyone; not even the man who so callously broke me. My mended heart goes out to all those still suffering. You're absolutely not alone and trust me when I say your heart will start healing, my beloved broken beings. For now, its okay to be a little bit in pieces. You'll need those broken bits when you decide you're ready to build yourself back up. Hold strong, my dear ones. You're worth more than what the lowest opinions would have you believe. ❤

To my friend who I've never met: I raise my glass of commiserations to you. Wear your sorrow as a badge of honor and pride. After all, could you grieve if you had not first LOVED? Isn't it so, that the ability to love and be loved is the greatest good, to which anyone might aspire? You grieve therefore you MUST have loved. And when time has softened the worst of your pain, I'm confident that you will still be capable of love and worthy of being loved. If you have the resolve risk your heart again, and I've no doubt that you will, the love you find will be all the sweeter for it. And to that end, i raise my glass to you once more. No longer with commiserations of loss, but to a tear stained, and hopeful future, made all the sweeter by the bitter paths we must sometimes walk.

It shares the same melody as the Scottish song Loch Lomond but the lyrics base it firmly in Ireland and it was made popular in the 20th century by Irish artists such as Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy. It may have Scottish roots but in the modern era, it is universally recognized as a traditional Irish folk song.
