Back in 1952, for a black and white film like this, the theater projectionist would put a red filter in front of the projector for scenes on Mars because Mars was the angry red planet. In later technology, they would somehow dye the film red for those sections.

I saw this movie as a young kid in the 60's and find it as captivating now as I did then but on an even deeper level. This time I noticed the not so subtle commentary on man's unending lust for the almighty dollar. When Mars claims to be able to feed 1,000 people per year on an acre of land, mankind doesn't see the opportunity to end world hunger, but the loss of income to farmers and ranchers; when Mars claims to have abandoned the use of coal and oil for over 300 years, mankind does not see the opportunity for a clean environment, but instead sees the loss of income for the energy sector. When will we realize that money isn't everything and perhaps, just maybe, that it IS the root of all evil? With every advance humans have made, the loss or diminished use of one sector of the economy has always been replaced by a greater need in the new sector. "Fear thee not change, for with change shall come new opportunities."-quote by me, I just said that, lol. Thanks for posting this classic film!

These movies are time machines of sociology. I was very young a few years after this movie was released, but I recall watching it on black and white tv as a young boy. Notice at the beginning of the movie, everyone introduces each other as "how do you do"? Not, how are you? Not, how's it been? Not, how's it going? What was the common expression in 1952? How about, "how do you do"? These movies are history lessons for how we spoke back in the day. Priceless, IMHO. When people hundreds of years from now want a history lesson on how people spoke during a certain period, they will simply go to a digital version of whatever technology is in place at the time to learn how we spoke, acted and lived. We can't say that so well for history over 150 years ago unless we resort to books, papers, and texts.

Freedom? Freedom of religion from the oppression of Soviet police and a totalitarian government? Vaguely I guess, but most people recognize that violence and oppression are bad things (until reproductive rights or sexual self-determination are suggested). Kindness? That Chris and his wife were kind to the mad scientist? It served no purpose and they tried to kill him. Honesty? In that Chris wanted to share the messages? He also wanted to obscure the one he didn't like. This was all just pandering to capitalist christian superiority in the Cold War era. A fun, funny, and interesting time capsule of prejudices but not much more.

But it didn't happen, did it? We didn't get Gratitude, love and compassion, instead, we got ingrates, hate and indifference. We didn't keep faith in who we really are but sold out to the dark side; the sinister; the malevolent. Look what the world is becoming, is it what you wanted for yourselves and your children? This little movie had some interesting angles to it and for that I think it was well worth my time.

The Arrival was good - focused on dialogue & story. Occasionally Hollywood comes up with a good one, though I admit their current obsession with "series" type sci fi films puts me off sometimes..

Oh, they're capable but won't for the money tap would run dry swiftly. Vice has a larger audience than religion, that is why hell was designed to expand for the customers who will check in after the flesh life ends.

Hollywood is quite capable of making a better movie than this self-righteous piece of propaganda. Thing is, they won't. This flick is fascinating as a piece of Cold War propaganda, done so in a right-wing fashion that would make anyone Christian and religious proud. (For anyone's information, I'm also right-wing, but this piece of celluloid is cringe-worthy in its certainty and self-righteousness). I watched this flick along with The 27th Day--and the only difference was the amount of moralizing done by the latter film, although this comes pretty close. Sorry, this film shouldn't be taken by anyone as a sign of good filmmaking. Meh.

Great to watch again after 40 or 50 years, If you are 50 years & over then you know that when these types of films came on the TV (that's if your parents owned one) it was such a thing for the imagination, they really gripped a lot of people as this sort of stuff was left for comic books so when on TV it was a real treat to watch

Great movie with an awesome plot! It considers what might have happened if the plot actually happened in our world. Not only is this high quality sci-fi, but deals with the moral/spiritual issues one would expect if this story were actually true. BRAVO!

Somehow, in all my years watching old movies, I have missed this one. While fraught with "glitches', it is still a wonderful movie, and very well thought out. It's nice to see an ending that you couldn't quite predict. this needs to be shown ,especially now. with so much hatred, lies, and confusion in our world.

Totally! Great movie.. it has such prescient relevance.. Perhaps more relevant now then when it was made... The way the Russian Premiere casually spoke coldly about the people. About killing millions, merely to 'convince the rest'. How far is Trump from this sort of thinking? Already there are extensive categories of people that he thinks should not exist,..(Not the least of which the people's voice, ...) I never forgot to love good and hate evil!

@@tomwatson8144 Ahh, did he insult your Excellency in The Oval Office. Takes some mighty obtuse powers of observation to deny Trump has "mental issues." His insecurities are out of the bottle. His narcissism on full display. His corrupt way of looking at everything doesn't jibe very well with the highest office in the land. Really, on top of everything else plus his Misogynistic leanings i think the question of his sociopathy is a legitimate one. It's a mess that no doubt has set our country back and exposed just how many people will enable, defend and minimise his behavior. Some too proud to admit misjudgment of him and those who's views mesh with his bias toward those damn people who's skin tone he seems to envy while he denigrates their origin and circumstance. Hell, he uses H1B visa's to import help for his Winery and Mar-A-Lago. I imagine Trump Tower too.
