I have probably learnt more from your videos than from anywhere else. Its cool how you manage to simplify things. Also love how you approach stuff like acclimating and adding corals, very well explained how and why we can add them much quicker than people think.

In dealing with diatoms, which every tank gets, when they got widespread in my tank after cycling I added snails and hermit crabs and they devoured all of it in a few days. The snails were astrea and the hermits were blue and scarlet. I had a couple small turbos too. 60 gallon reef. Thanks for your video series. Very knowledgeable and helpful.

OMG Jake I love watching your videos for the real information on reef keeping. You know your sh@t and there’s no doubt about that, it’s just refreshing to here you speak of how easy it is to keep a standard reef aquarium without all the hipe of having to have a ton of electronics and using every product out there because someone said it’s the only way. I’m 52 and been reefing off and on for 20 plus years steady for the last 10, I don’t care about how fast my corals grow, I care how healthy they are and happy they are. I keep my hands out always, feed fish once a day if I remember and keep the glass clean so I can enjoy looking at it. Keep up the great work Jake and have a great reefing year!

I set up a ten gallon out of stuff I had in the boneyard a couple weeks ago and stole all of my soft and LPS corals out of my main tank... so far it’s been a simple beautiful reef. Right now I have purigen in the HOB but I’m really thinking of going to just run mechanical filtration. It’s put me in a different mind set about what I actually enjoy about the hobby. I like the idea of a simple not-overstocked tank I can spend most of my time watching rather than tinkering. I went years as a “water change guy” with zero issues and not testing unless there were visual cues... and the solution was always more water changes lol.. Love your tank!

I've kept marine tanks for 15 years including an 8ft full coral tank and I still enjoy watching your videos and finding out little nuggets of info that somehow I haven't picked up or have overlooked. Perfect channel :)

Beautiful tank thanks for doing a one day set up I have done many tanks that way and have good looking tank down the track I normally get salt and temp right and then add rock corals and one or two small fish but have have fully stock a tank with corals in under 2 weeks and the live sand and life rock does help a lot too With you on the salt level I run my tank about 33 to 34 normally and top off when at 35ppt have always done was I don't run ATO on the tanks And for diatom I use yeast at 1/4 teaspoon per 400gal or just a pinch for smaller tanks in to 2 cups of aquarium water stir muiltpe times over 20mins to active the yeast and pour in tank and do a dose every other day used it for years and it seem to speed it up

Jake, i have a 14 gal peninsula. It’s been running for 3 years. A mixed reef with a 4 year old sea apple from my old tank. I feed heavily with benereef. I don’t have a refugium but corals are thriving.

Wanted to thank you for this series. I have learned more from watching these videos multiple times than from anywhere else. I am setting up a similar system and plan to follow a similar protocol to this video series. Could you please make a list of all the corals you out in the tank? Wow i did not expect my question to pop up in the video. As an update to the diatom bloom i faced, i really just monitored posphate levels and ran gfo when i realized i had high phosphate. Also, i got a diamond goby that sifted all the sand and completely eliminated the algae. I would say monitoring levels and running gfo while feeding lightly eliminated all algae. Sand was cleaned by the goby and walls cleared up like fog on a window. The tank is currently completely free of most algae except the slightest bit of hair algae that seems under control. Also, great video!

This has convinced me to get into the Hoby, it shows newbies like me that marine tanks don't have to be as difficult and expensive to set up as I first thought. Love how beautiful and clean this aquarium looks, a lot of tanks I see just look a complete mess to me.

Jake, you proved me wrong. I am mature enough to admit it. Nice tank and great instructions. I still think that the easier way to hobbiest success is to take it slow and steady but well done. Do me a favor would ya? Do an episode about what you feed your new vs mature systems, frequency of feeding, types of foods, etc. That would be awesome for a new reefer to see. This is like the 5th time watching this series. Learn a little more every time as I understand more. I am new to saltwater and am in the process of setting up something very similar only slightly larger. Honestly I have had a African Cichlid tank set up for about 22 years and it's self sustaining, I hardly do anything to it other than a 20% water change about 4 tints a year. I was actually in the process of downsizing because I didn't want to mess with it anymore. So I bought a smaller tank to move Scott 1/2 my fish to and was doing research on KZfaq about tank setup and your 300 days no water change video came up in the search. I watched it and it awestruck me. It made keeping a reef tank seem possible. I always thought having a Saltwater tank was to complicated. As I do research I realize that it is very complicated, but I keep coming back to this series and convince myself that it only has to as complicated as I want it to be. Thanks again. Hopefully I can have success similar to yours.

It was also not clear it the first couple of vids in the series that this was a one day-and-done build. Is the flow you show during filming typical? It seems like a very low flow tank. Good looking tank. I'm interested to see how Razor works. Brightwell's web site says nothing about Razor killing algae.

I maintain a 10 gallon filled to the brim with coral. I mix my salt at 34 ppt. I refill a small amount of water every morning. The highest salinity it becomes is 35 ppt.

That was a !!! great !!! update every time I watch your videos I hear you saying less is more and I have to agree. I thought it looked like there was bubble algae in the tank but you were calling it something else Probably the scientific name that most of us like me don't know L.O.L. I like simple, No ATO on that tank makes perfect sense to me I would do the same. My tank is 120-gallon and keeping the ATO working is still "not simple" I've tried three different models so far Hydra-Fill with titanium sensors looses sensitivity stops pumping, Hydors Smart Level huge swings in low and high water level and Aqua Medic electronic sensor just stops working or works intermittent after about a month or two. If you have a recommendation i'm open looking at Tunze Osmolator now. Just keep the videos coming I still have a lot to learn and your knowledge always keeps it simple...

Great Update! I noticed the little white spots all over the back wall. I have these in my tank. Can you tell me what they are and how to get rid of them?

Hello jake thanks for the amazing videos. Followwing your videos I decided to get Miceobacter start xlm. However, I was thinking like I can add a fish to the tank right away but after doing tests for ammonia it is changing ona daily basis one day it is 0.5 and the other it is 1 ppm. During the new setup can Istart moving my corals to the new tank while waiting for the ammonia to go down?

and on the diatom comment. Diatoms feed mostly off silica, dim lights makes it worse, either no lights or just use proper lighting, feed more to boost bacteria and your diatoms will go away. Carbon dosing is a huge benefit, I particularly use vodka as it does not swing PH as much as sugar or vinegar would.

I watched a similar build series on Waterbox channel and they did things a little different. What they didn’t talk about was water parameters and testing. Can you discuss what parameters should be and how often you should test water? Everything I see online says to buy a bunch of tests and products to add to the tank. Simple is better for me!

Im dying to keep anemones but the shop keeper says u cannot hav anemone in ur tank unless and until It is 6 months old. How true is that?? Do we have to clean skimmer , if yes. How? Do i have to switch off the light at nite time?? How often to change the water and how much??what should be the intensity and color of light?? Plz answer these questions..🙏

Hey Jake....not a fan of the woodpecker music...yes, that sounds like a woodpecker! :) FYI, I just cycled my tank with StartXLM and they were right....7 days! In 7 days I had 0 ammonia, zero nitrites, and 3 nitrates. Just to make sure I wasn't crazy I added 3 PPM ammonia to the tank (no fish or corals yet) and now 5 days later, 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites, and 8 nitrates. Going to pick up a few fish this weekend!

Hi Jake, Just need some clarification regarding the use of CaribSea LifeRock (infused with bacteria using AragAlive™ technology) and CaribSea Arag-Alive Sand and Brightwell MicrōBacter Start XLM all together as you did for this build......Brightwell has a note under the description for the product that recommends you not use any other type of bacteria product until your cycle with this product is complete. Do not use live sand and particularly DO NOT USE dry seeded artificial live rock. There are no dry bacteria species that will be compatible with this nitrifying bacteria product or that are useful to cycle an aquarium! I'm a little confused and what are your thoughts? I'd really appreciate your insight. Thanks.

A juvenile vlamingi tang will eat the bubble algae , you need to have 1 in that tank , once its done its job , you could move it to another tank . I am speaking from experience for my 120 gallon tank . It was a lucky encounter , a friend offloaded me his juvenile vlamingi tang to me due to his tank change . I myself do not keep tang in my own tank thats how I saw the bubble algae being decimated by a single vlamingi tang . Imagine a 120 gallon full of bubble algae and it disappeared in just a few days only . Hope this helps !

I love the arm that lifts up! Iiwah I woul dhave bought this light first and saved a ton of money! I have a strip light over tank because my cabinets are over the top and didnt have room but I think If i hang it from side of my tank it should work and be able to lift it and get in inside my cabinets! Do you think it may be to strong for a nuvo 20? The tank is very shallow! I cant decide between this and AI prime because prime is on sale and cheaper but I love the flex arm and its much more attractive both the light and the arm versus using a flex arm from Ai and there regular arm dosnt lift up!

Loving the build and loved the videos, only thing is at 17:26 where you show the tank's progress as proof that corals don't need cycling, but the tank was cycled, at least enough to keep the fish healthy. But yeah, I agree with you, I don't think coral needs a cycled tank, if you're not feeding the coral there shouldn't be much ammonia anyways.

Loved the video...wish that the actual removal of the algae and aiptasia would have been shown at the end. Maybe on another video? 🤷‍♀️

Although beneficial for evaporation, does the glass not negatively impact the effectiveness of the light on the coral ?

So I have a question. In your setup you used live sand and artificial bacterial seeded piece of live rock and then you used Brightwell micro bacterxlm. Correct? Well, I was reading the instructions on the bright well, and it says to not use live sand at all and they recommend never using artificially seeded Leibrock ever they claim that it will increase the cycle time by weeks. I need to know if this is the proper procedure because I’m getting ready to set my tank up and I wanted to do it the way you did it, but I’m not sure if using the bright well stuff is the right way. Hah, thanks for adding my comment in, Jake. What I meant wasn't exactly bioload but that the stability of the reef. A new reef has some unstable params as you know (DkH especially.) I suppose since I keep almost exclusively SPS my mind went immediately to "you're crazy" but with softies it's not so much an issue. BTW, what CUC are you going to add to this tank when the time is right?
