Red Sonja is a character that USES her sex appeal as a weapon. She's literally made for a 'male gaze'.

She's basically just a female Conan. She walks around nearly butt naked simply because Conan & Red Sonja are from a setting where barely anyone aside for rich people, has clothes. The double standard of asking a woman whose actively doing cardio why she's scantily clad and she will tell you, when involved in active physical activity, wearing less actually keeps the body from overheating and affects positive performance during said activity. When I was a kid my father introduced me to Red Sonja and it was an incredible experience to see the movie. I got to see a beautiful powerful woman that could wield a sword and hold her own in battle alongside heroes like Conan the Barbarian. It was both inspirational and empowering as a young girl to see that woman could be like Red Sonja. Maybe I would never have her gorgeous red hair but I could embrace being strong and kicking ass without worrying about what others thought. I’m 45 now and sadly my father has passed on but my memory of us watching this movie together is still special. Now I am saddened by the idea that they are going to wokefy and ruin this for me and everyone else that once enjoyed it.

It used to be done privately. For example, a director would have his name changed to Alan Smithee in the film's credits because he didn't want to be associated with what he thought was a bad movie. The first time I recall seeing a director talk bad about a movie he just made was back in 2015 when Josh Trank got on social media to distance himself from the Fantastic Four movie right before it came out in theaters. Normally, directors and actors don't talk bad about a movie or other actors because they want studios to see that they're a team player so studios will keep hiring them for other movies. But now, it seems like directors and actors are more concerned with their public image than with promoting a bad film as good and worth seeing.
@OrochiOni4 ай бұрын
@@G360LIVE The first time I remember hearing about a director insisting his name be removed from the credits and replaced with the infamous 'Alan Smithee' was back in 1996, when Kevin Yagher disassociated himself from Hellraiser: Bloodline due to studio interference. Then I found out it had been done many times before. In regards to public image. Common sense would seem to dictate that these people should be more concerned about what the majority of the potential audience thinks rather than the minority. But common sense isn't so common in Hollywood, it seems.

Or, they could have done so back in the '80s and '90s... I'm really not convinced they could do it now.... the experience, insight, talent, and skills to make a clever and entertaining sword-and-sorcery parody featuring muppets - or CGI or live action or anything else - just do not exist in the Western entertainment industry anymore! More importantly, a good, entertaining parody like that should be is a labor of love: only a real fan of the Red Sonja stories and the Muppets could produce an entertaining parody like that, but the woke entertainment industry has no love for either. We may accuse them of writing "bad fan fiction", but the truth is, these are NOT fans! They are making disasters of better IPs than they'll ever make because they hate it, and it's an open secret, really, that they hate it - they'll be the first ones to tell you that they're completely changing it because of all the various woke reasons they can find to nitpick the original property and remove from it, without adding anything of genuine value to anyone - even themselves - to replace it, only endless propaganda. No, there's no way they could make a muppet movie with Miss Piggy as Red Sonja today, and make it any better than anything else they touch. Henson and his team could have done it and made it look easy 30 or 40 years ago, but nobody who could get the Green Light for it today could do it!

The point of Red Sonja being so scantily clad is because she is the forbidden female. Literally chosen by her Goddess after her rape to avenge the temple she could only give herself to a man that defeated her in combat. Any man who fought her died except for the one chosen by the Goddess to be her mate. It wasn't even bandits, it was Gedrin's soldiers after they defiled the temple for the artifact which no man can touch; he would be instantly disintegrated on contact. Women, however, could touch and move it about, and it wielded the power to destroy the world in the wrong hands. Sonja's quest, aside from holy retribution, was the retrieval of the artifact. So yeah, they're taking out an essential part of the character's backstory and how she came to be empowered. It wasn't just simply "Oh she was SAed so now she gets revenge!" It was more than that. Like her chain mail bikini - she was already invulnerable, no man could harm her, so it was simply to taunt men with what they could not have. Women could harm her, which we saw in the final confrontation with Gedrin. How Kalidor overcame the geas is he had the stamina to fight her to exhaustion and technically that was him defeating her in combat. She didn't kill him, he didn't kill her, they fell in love after she witnessed his heroism, bravery, and intelligence, he defeated her by sword fighting with her until she could not stand anymore, they rode off into the sunset together and roll credits.

I think you're reading too much into it. Her original costume, in the first comic books she was in, wasn't that skimpy. Her costume was later changed (i.e., she was given less to wear) to more fit the style of fantasy art in the '70s.
@pietrayday99154 ай бұрын
@@G360LIVE- Conan was in much the same boat, really: the original artwork from the old pulp stories had Conan wearing a bit more clothing and armor than we're used to seeing, and boasting a somewhat more modest physique than the bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzeneger would bring to the films. The skimpy costumes really were a big thing by the '70s, though to be fair, you have Edgar Rice Burroughs as much as anyone to blame for that back in the 1910s between Tarzan and John Carter, who rather famously did their action hero thing the way Burroughs' God and Nature intended: barely clothed! (ER Burroughs, it seems, considered clothing somewhat untrustworthy and weak: clothing was something you wear if you had something to hide or be ashamed of, or a weakness to cover!) The Chainmail Bikini started its life as a token nod to modesty in portrayals of Burroughs characters like Deja Thoris.... The '80s film Red Sonja wore a much less revealing costume than the later comic portrayals, for whatever it's worth, and nobody really seemed to mind, even though it was the '80s and you could get away with things in movies at that time that you couldn't before or after that time period....
@pietrayday99154 ай бұрын
For whatever it's worth, there's a subtext to the thing about Sonja never again being in danger of laying with a man who could not defeat her in a fair fight: the only men who would fight her fairly are those who are honorable and worthy to lay with her. The distinction is subtle but important: it wasn't merely a matter of Sonja being a plaything for any unworthy man who could overpower her. By taking up the call to a life of proactive heroism, protecting the innocent, avenging the weak and defeating evil, she was shielded from ever being the victim of another evil man, leaving her with her choice of honorable men. The Conan expy character was an honorable man capable of overpowering Sonja in combat (after wearing her down in his persistence), but unwilling to take advantage of her afterward. The SA angle to her backstory aside, it's actually a rather wholesome story, and even with the SA angle, Sonja made the choice not to simply accept defeat and humiliation as "damaged goods" because of something someone else did to her out of spite, but instead to overcome that moment of humiliation and defeat, rise above it, and become something greater than her lowest moment in life... and for his part, not-Conan (this was originally meant to be a Conan the Barbarian sequel, but there were problems with the rights to the name) was the sort of hero who understood, accepted, and respected that, and could see past the attempt to disgrace Sonja. The film version is apparently slightly different from the comics, but essentially seems to stay true to the basic idea: I'm more familiar with the film version, and the film version adds the twist to the backstory that Sonja was actually the target of the lust of an evil witch-queen who wanted to have Sonja for herself, and Sonja, disgusted, refused her advances, scarring the witch-queen in the rebuff, with the attack on Sonja and destruction of Sonja's village ordered by the witch-queen out of spite and revenge: it adds a little bit to Sonja's more righteous life as an avenger sanctioned by the goddess of her temple, compared to the witch-queen's more selfish revenge against Sonja (and it works just as well whether the character who ordered the attack on Sonja is female or male, though the fact that this character is female does add a little drama through the "no man may defeat me" kind of thing that Sonja is protected by, when it comes time for a confrontation on a magically more even footing between Sonja and her mortal enemy!) You can see why the wokies REALLY don't like this property, and can't wait to get their hooks into it!

Red Sonja, the fierce swordswoman and adventurer, has a captivating history in the world of comics. Let’s delve into her intriguing tale: Origins and Creation: Red Sonja was brought to life by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973. She draws inspiration from Robert E. Howard’s character Red Sonya of Rogatino, who appeared in Howard’s 1934 short story “The Shadow of the Vulture.” In the Marvel universe, Red Sonja’s debut occurred in Conan the Barbarian #23 (1973). Her Story: Hailing from the Hyborian Age, Red Sonja was only seventeen when her family’s home on the Hyrkanian steppes was attacked by bandits, leaving her as the sole survivor 12. Her origin story was vividly told in the tale titled “The Day of the Sword.” In this version: Sonja’s family is brutally murdered, and their house is burned down by mercenaries. She attempts to defend herself but struggles to lift her brother’s sword. Tragically, she is also raped by the leader of the group. Signature Look: Red Sonja is instantly recognizable by her iconic attire: the bikini armor, typically made of scale mail. Her fiery red hair and fierce determination make her a memorable figure in the fantasy genre. Evolution and Adaptations: After her Marvel Comics run, Red Sonja found a new home at Dynamite Entertainment in 2005. The series underwent a reboot by writer Gail Simone in 2013, revealing an altered version of Red Sonja’s early life through flashbacks. She has crossed paths with other characters from both Marvel Comics and Dynamite Comics. Beyond Comics: Red Sonja’s popularity extends beyond the pages of comics. In 1985, a feature film titled “Red Sonja” starred Brigitte Nielsen in the titular role. She has been ranked as one of the “100 Sexiest Women in Comics” by Comics Buyer’s Guide 1. So, whether she wields a sword or graces the silver screen, Red Sonja remains an enduring and fierce presence in the realm of fantasy adventures!

"A lot of people wouldnt be comfortable wearing this" sounds like a lot of people shouldn't be taking the role. "Does she have to be this scantily clad" yes if its a movie about red sonja. Very, very few movies should have a costume like that, but this is one.

meanwhile, these hollywood actresses are almost naked in awards shows and they are comfortable, how about their almost naked selfies in tiktok or twitter?, and look how flimsy today's bikini's are?
@wolfofthewest80194 ай бұрын
Especially since Red Sonja's bikini is very intentionally meant to make her look like sexed-up eye candy. There's nothing Red Sonja loves more than walking into a tavern, feeling a bunch of men lusting after her, and giving one of them a chance to pinch her exposed ass. And then she kills them. That's kind of her whole thing.
@John-fk2ky4 ай бұрын
I wouldn’t be bothered by a redesign, but then again, I think too much about practicality, and if you’re going to wear armor it should actually be effective. A chain-mail bikini is stupid on two fronts. Being chain-mail, it’s heavier than cloth (which she should be wearing underneath anyway if she plans on avoiding injuries just from walking around in it), but since it’s a bikini it protects almost nothing of importance to continued survival. It’s one of the few costumes I can’t mentally handwave.
@StaringIntoAbyss4 ай бұрын
@@John-fk2ky its leather with metal disks over it, like curtains attached from the top. Almost nobody in the setting is wearing armor except soldiers, and not all of them either. Many of the men are bare chested with basically fur kilts and leather straps, stuff like that.

@@John-fk2ky Red Sonja doesn't wear armor, dingus. It's so obnoxious watching morons like you talk about " if you’re going to wear armor it should actually be effective." How about this, dummy: If you're going to espouse an opinion, know what the eff you're talking about, which you clearly don't. The chainmail bikini was stolen off a harem slave. It was designed to be sexually appealing and is not nor has it ever been armor. Red Sonja is a superhuman, her skin is as hard as iron and blades can barely scratch her and arrows glance off her skin. She has no need to wear armor, it would only slow her down. So goddamn sick of people who have never read a Red Sonja comic in their life and don't know jack about the character opining on her "armor." The second you numpkins call it armor, I know you don't know shit about the subject.

Depends on the incarnation, or even the individual movie. Arnold was more fully dressed in the first film than in the second one, and the Conan of the pulps wore different clothes for different situations and locations. That being said, Conan remained tall, buff, and relatively good-looking (battle scars aside) through it all. They never made him ugly or out of shape.

Both characters' artwork are callbacks to characters created by Edgar Rice Burroughs over a century ago, including Tarzan, John Carter, and Deja Thoris: Burroughs seems to have equated clothing with decadent civilization and people who have something to hide, weaknesses to compensate for, and things to be ashamed of, so most of Burroughs' most memorably-written characters seemed to do their adventuring thing naked, or nearly so - wearing skimpy thongs or leather harnesses, and little else! Thus the Chainmail Bikini was born, as well as the skin-tight costumes of comic book superheroes (like Superman, who started his life as a pretty transparent John Carter clone, switched from an Earth-man with earthly strength who finds himself with super-strength in the rarified gravity and atmosphere and culture of decadent and dying Mars, to an alien with super-strength on Earth!) Burroughs' Deja Thoris is also the inspiration for Princess Leia's costume while captive of Jabba the Hutt (if you're a guy who grew up with the Star Wars movies in the '80s, you'll remember the costume vividly!) Alternatively also the memorable costume worn by Caroline Munro's character in the Star Wars clone, 'Starcrash' (again, if you're a guy of a certain age, you'll likely remember the costume vividly!) 'Star Wars' was also a pretty transparent clone of a mix of 'Dune' and Burroughs' John Carter stories (there's much more than a dash of Burroughs' dying Mars in both Tatooine and the planet Dune!) Red Sonja is dressed rather conservatively compared to Burroughs' literary version of Deja Thoris of Barsoom, especially the '80s film version of Red Sonja, who wore considerably more than just a "chainmail bikini"!) It doesn't take very long to find some of the old-school pulp artwork for Deja Thoris and John Carter wearing practically nothing at all!

Manly feminist women who have dedicated their entire lives to "averting" the male gaze (code for making yourself as unattractive as possible, both in personality and aesthetics) or "fighting" the male gaze (yeah, losing battle there fighting against one of natures strongest incentives for any creature: Sexual markers) have a certain "mean girls" vibe and envy to them regarding prettier women. Ive seen their spite and bile firsthand! Mean girls isnt just a cautionary tale warning people about "pretty" girls narcissistic personalities, its a cautionary tale about women in general and how easily women who feel shunned will tear everything and everyone down. Just search "male gaze" on youtube and see the amount of deluded women that think their husband should take them as they are while they feel zero incentive to be even remotely attractive or charming.

"How dare a work of fiction be catered to a specific demographic who primarily buys from and supports said industry!" Seems like good business to me, supply what the people want. If the people want a "modern" Red Sonja-like character, then create a new character and story you think would be more appropriate. As we have seen, changing something that has been LONG established seldom gets the response you want. Not saying it cannot work, take Nick Fury's change for example, but it can take much more work then making something new.
@nobodyshome67924 ай бұрын
Nick Fury being black was an "alternate reality" and joke. Hence why his character design was based on Samuel L. Jackson. Of course, they are also technically 2 different characters. With Nick Fury Sr. Being a Caucasian dude and Nick Fury Jr. being a black guy. (And yes, the original Nick Fury did marry a black woman, back in 1965....)
