I had a friend in high school killed in a car wreck. She was only 17. This song brought tears to this Marine's eyes. Truly a great song.

So sorry for your loss, my neighbors children mourned the loss of a girlfriend of theirs at age 17, for the funeral expenses, our neighbors held a barbecue sale in their yard

On April 4, 1980, Sovine suffered a heart attack while driving his Ford van in Nashville, which caused him to crash. The injuries and his heart attack were fatal.

A friend of mine in middle school gave me a copy of these words, written on a sheet of notebook paper. I had never heard this song before, but knew the lyrics as Red began to sing. I'm 61 now, and a mother, grandmother and, a greatgrandmother. The grandkids are learning to drive now...they need to hear this song/story. I'll make sure they do before they get behind the wheel again!

I was 16 when my brother who was 23 was killed in a car accident. It was the first time that I seen my Dad cry. That was 15 Nov 1978. You never forget it.

I read the poem many years ago, I believe it was called, "I'm only 16". But I've never heard a recorded version...Thank you for this....I lost my son to a drunk driver in 2006...he was 18. I'm sending this to his younger cousins and hopefully it will have an impact.

My husband and I have been there, done that. On 29 Sept. 2001, a minivan collided with my daughter-in-law's car just up from our house. Then, we got the phone call saying his wife and the boys had been in a wreck. Will, our youngest, had turned seven a few weeks before; Johnathan, our youngest grandson at that time, was 13 1/2 months old. We still think about them every day, every holiday, every family gathering they're not attending. You learn to resume your life, but you'll never "get over" it. You just learn to live with it, that's all. My heart goes out to those who have lost children or grandchildren.

I lost a loved one as well, but not by an Auto Accident. On September 5th 2002 my son just turned one years old. On September 9th same year, my younger sister called my home to wish Nolan, my son, a Happy Belated Birthday , we talked a little bit, she lived in Maryland and I live in Washington State, clear across the world it seems, after we talked she told me to give Nolan kisses from her, now seeing as I said we live across the country from each other she never got to see her little nephew. Well a month has gone by and October I was waiting for her call, she never called so I just figured she was busy, heck she has her life and I have mine. End of October came and I still have not received her call so I decided to call her to see how her and her husband was doing. The call went to voice mail and I heard a strange voice in the recording, that was strange I thought, at first I thought I called the wrong number so I called again, same voice so I thought it was her husbands daughter and left a message to have Vicky, my sister, call me back when she gets a chance. Two days later my mother called me which is strange because I have not talked to my mother for a long time and she didn't have my current phone number, she gave me the worst news I have ever heard. After Vicky called me she did her normal routine at home and she got tired seeing that it was late, well she sat in her favorite chair to watch some TV and fell asleep. On the night of September 9th, 2002 my sister passed away in her sleep. She had some medical problems and the meds that the Doctor gave her caused her to get obese to fast, way to fast and because of that her heart could not take the strain anymore and stopped beating, she went peacefully in her sleep. Sorry, everytime I think about it I still tear up, but to make a long story short. No one knew how to read her filing system so didn't know what my phone number was or they would have told me sooner. I miss our monthly calls to each other and my son never got to meet his Aunt Vicky, a very kind and loving soul but at least the Good Lord called her home, just to soon but it was his will.

No booze or drugs just driving a couple sisters home. We topped the hill 1/2 mile from their home hit the ditch. Flipped 180 degrees Good news is we all survived all who seen the car never knew how we could.

It started with my parents They always listened to my style of music and l listened to theirs... l always listen to my kids music and they always listen to mine... Red Sovine is high on all our lists . A man with a voice and a heart that makes you want to listen to the stories he had to tell...l cant imagine any singer today being able to tell a story like that... TRULY UNIQUE.................this song would be a great back ground track for road accident campaigns directed to the young drivers out there that think they are the kings or queens of the road....

Jeff Eason They won't listen or care. Today's teenagers are too jaded to be moved by this. Most of them are exposed to extreme violence every day in the form of video games and graphic movies and TV shows. If you went into the average high school classroom and played this, they would be too glued to their phones to even notice anything.

Haven't heard this song before now but a print version of it appeared for years in Dear Abby. I do have a best of Red but this isn't on it. Wiki. says he did die in a car crash but it wasn't reckless driving--he suffered a fatal heart attack while driving (1980)

yes,i know what you mean when we take life for granted.i did back in 1977,i was just a few months out of high school.i live in a very rural area in far s.e.,oklahoma.my friend and i had started drinking about noon on a saturday.we was drinking moonshine whiskey mixed with orangejuice.well,we had been drinking and driving all day and on the last stretch of that gravel road,i was coming upon a one lane wood bridge without banisters on it and i was going too fast and i missed the runners.

i missed the runners on the wood bridge and ended up driving through the ditch but managed to keep it under control until i got it stopped.no one was hurt,but we was sure shook up.i mentioned drinking all day;started at noon,we had been drinking for 13 hours when that happened.it was by the grace of god that we wasnt killed.i was 17 then,unmarried.i am now 53 with 4 kids and bunches of grandkids.i dont drink anymore now.i give my life to the lord now,so i dont need those evil spirits anymore.

one of my coworkers children was texting behind the wheel last year. she hit a curve and boned into a truck. her and her passenger were killed instantly. the passenger was her fiances baby sister, only 18. the fiance was driving behind them and texting to her. he heard it all and saw the accident. he had to drive up and see them pulled out. it affected a whole community. so before you text behind the wheel think is that message worth your life?

Wouldn't be driving too fast if he'd been smoking "pot", as anyone who's ever driven under that particular influence knows (very much not advisable, natch). As for the song; you'd need a heart of stone not to laugh.

Must be nice to sit and judge people spelling. To bad there are stupid people who yell and curse like fools and judge people. Who knows... maybe there is someone who would call you those things because you fail to write in sentences. Stupid is the person who thinks they are in a position to judge when in reality they are the same,

Lighten up this is whaut they learn in school ;mEDIA ; ETC ; now a days ; attend a few School Board Meetings and fix it ; it starts with you the offended ; to make a move and get them to teaching things correctly ! It`s not the kids ; it`s how they are taught ; Parents ; T V ; Teachers ; Have you called and talked to a City P D dispatcher lately ? How about your Medical Represenatives ??
