I kinda feel like they needed the flexibility after deciding to take Rafaela that's why Dalbec made it. I'm shocked that they signed some odd and old pitcher to be a multi inning bullpen guy when we have a TON of those guys

@@redseatradio yeah but then they could have gone with Cooper who looked way better than the guy getting cut from the Pirates... Or even keep Wink as that guy and use Campbell or Wissert as the one inning middle to late relief. This just makes no sense. I wasn't against them bringing someone in but Anderson both isn't that good and blocks better guys. The only thing I can say he's good for is being the first DFA if they get Monty or some other pitcher who's quality without having to drop someone later but again that doesn't make a ton of sense.

Non-existent is a bit of an exaggeration. Four of the five AAA starters are plausible rotation depth (Criswell, Walter, Fitts, Gambrell), plus Anderson and Winckowski. The wheels could definitely fall off with more bad luck (especially multiple more season-enders), but then again, mid-year acquisitions aren't impossible either if the team is otherwise decent but they're really hurting in the rotation. Let's see what we get.

Well, Dalbec can actually play the corner outfield spots too if needed, plus 2B, so that's even more versatility. He's also younger which points too staying healthier. I know he strikes out a lot, but he mashes lefties. He has 3 HR in 47 at-bats in spring training. Cron literally only had 3 hits, all singles. Dalbec's approach seems to be a little better this spring, and I truly think he will only get at-bats against lefty pitching. If that's the case, he strikes out at a much lower clip, and all his other metrics go up too.... AVG, OPS, extra-base hits. Hate on Bobby all you want, but he's due for a solid year.

I would rather have another starter (I don't expect it, but apparently Montgomery is still a possibility) and Whitlock as a swingman, mainly in the pen though. Anderson is a pitcher in decline, if you check his stats for the past 3-4 years, but occasionally you need an old hand who can "mop up" innings and he could be valuable like that. Worried about Abreu, but until Refsnyder comes back at least I think we'll stick with him. A few weeks in Triple A might help him find his swing though.

Pumped about Rafaela but I hope they let him work through the kinks and don’t just send him down after a bad 1-2 month start. The Anderson signing isn’t awful but confusing. They already have a guy like him in Criswell that can start or give multi inning relief. My guess is they hope he catches fire and after 2 months or so if he’s sucking he gets released. Bullpen seems solid but the team has too many 3-4 inning guys between Houck, Whitlock, Criswell, Anderson and Murphy if he comes back this year. Hopefully Houck and Whitlock can prove to be 5+ inning guys but they really could’ve used a reliable 5-6 inning guy to fall back on

I am totally psyched. Glad Rafaela made this team. After all he did earn it . I like the youth movement :) I am very pleased to have Abreu on this team too. We kept our spark plug Duran too !!! I like the starting rotation except I probably would have put Whitlock in the bullpen. I just feel that his ability to stay healthy would be better served in the bullpen. Plus he was a major weapon in the pen !!!Criswell certainly looked good to me. His fastball doesn't have much giddy up but his other pitches are pretty good. On occasion over the years I have seen a pitcher where their fastball doesn't exceed 89 or 90 mph but because of control and an arsenal of decent pitches ends up exceeding expectations. Joely Rodriguez actually looked pretty good to me in spring training . Being healthy makes a difference. I would prefer Campbell and Weissner both on this team. They both looked very good to me in spring training. To me its better to go with the best pitchers than the left/right thing but I understand. You really gotta love this teams upgraded defense. Thats major !!! We have a real shortstop playing the position and the outfield looks like a dream . Strong arms and speed prevail in our outfield. Winckowski in the bullpen is where he belongs. He is extremely successful there and its in the teams best interest. Anderson looks like a waste to me. Not impressed.

In my opinion, there's no way Whitlock should be a starter. For MLB: never pitched more than 78.1 innings in a season, 7 IL stints for 144 days, (days on IL/innings pitched) getting higher each year in MLB (over 1.13 IL days per innings pitched in 2023), last couple IL stints because of elbow. (on which he had Tommy John in 2019)... the Red Sox are tracking to ruin this kid if they insist on having him as a starter.

You need to justify why you feel these injuries are tied to him being a starter, and why any increased injury risk outweighs the upside of him potentially sticking in the rotation. He was a starter in college and in the minors. He did not throw more innings in the years he was starting at the MLB level than the year he was exclusively a reliever. And much of the time he spent on the IL was due to a hip injury he picked up while fielding off the mound that of course had nothing to do with him starting. It doesn't make sense to pull the plug on a guy who could plausibly be a mid-rotation starter because of some arm soreness in one season (2023), especially when he didn't get a normal ramp up in '23 due to his offseason hip surgery.

@@joelluongo7419It's all about role, not talent. Anderson will be used as a long reliever. He also provides some emergency depth if the rotation gets slammed with injuries. It's worth having a guy like this in the pen even if another legit short relief option gets bumped to AAA to start the year.
