After calling for a general strike on March 14, the Ruhr Red Army defeated the Freikorps and regular German army troops and began the largest armed workers' uprising in Germany, also known as the March Revolution (Märzrevolution) or Uprising of the Ruhr (Ruhraufstand). 300,000 miners supported the Red Army and the strikers took control of important cities such as Düsseldorf, Elberfeld or Essen, until they quickly controlled the entire Ruhr area.
After failed negotiations with the strikers, the government decided to send more troops to the area to fight the workers by force. On April 2, a contingent consisting of regular troops and Freikorps crushed the worker uprising and reconquered the Ruhr area. More than 1,000 workers died in the fighting.
