I was having trouble deciding which trailer brake controller to go with and the red arc one has really won me over since actually using it a few times now. I means the thing is just automatic and works flawlessly. This install was done on a 5th gen 2019 Toyota 4Runner. The 4Runner can pull up to 5,000 pound according to the manual but I feel this is under best case scenarios and not in real life driving.
The install was tough but this isn't the full of red arc, it's the fault of Toyota for not making access to the dash panels easier.
First you must remove the floor door seal trim, careful not to rip it up and break a plastic piece like I did. Then remove the trim next to where your left foot chills out while driving. There's a little plastic nut holding this trim piece in, it has three little hole on its head and is right next to the foot rest, again where your left foot goes. Leave the airbag panel alone and remove the large piece the goes around it, under the steering wheel, and up the sides next to the steering wheel.
I mounted the computer part (or the brains of the system) under the dash to a metal piece that was clearly visible. Many mount it down next to the right foot but this can get in the way and is unsightly. My way it's out of sight completely. It drilled two holes and connected it with screws.
The red arc knob that come through that dash had a hiccup. The little bezel it came with did not fit the 4runner. I ended up taking one of the stock bezels and drilling/cutting it until the knob fit it. Not ideal but it works well at the end of the day.

Anyone want an update on how the Redarc performs? Let me know and I'll make a video on it!

What’s the real difference in the elite vs the liberty? Will the elite be good for multi use/highway or if you plan to just do mainly highway buy the liberty? Buying one for my 2021 4Runner ORP Thanks.

@@northwest_5oh3 so to my understanding the real difference is the Elite's ability to let me control it if i want to, which might be good for pulling a tear drop trailer up and down a rough trail for example. Whereas the Liberty is great just for the road/highway and doesn't let you manually control it. Of course the Elite is great on the road too, but the real difference comes down to the Elite's ability to be manually controlled.

Your video saved our trim. Thanks for the video! The stock bezel for the controller is a pain.

Nice video, I'm installing mine today on my 4R. Redarc does sell a Switch Insert specific for the 4Runner (part: TPSI-002); the one that came with your kit is a universal one. Good job either way, will be referencing when I install.

Thanks for leaving the info here for everyone to find! I'm just happy mine looked okay in the end even without it! Sometimes you have work with what you got lol

Just installed this set up into my 2022 4R. I also opted to use the TPH-021 harness. However, on the Redarc website they actually recommend to use the other universal harness (tph-025) that you have in the video by splicing it with the factory supplied jumper harness on 2018 and newer year models. Per Redarc, this is bc using the tph-021 harness doesnt allow the unit to calibrate due to lower voltage of back feeding bc of a diode that is inside of the factory tow package. That information is directly from Redarcs website. Have you ran across any issues at all from installing this tph-021 harness? Im getting fault codes and also not sure my unit calibrated. Info on Redarcs website is a bit conflicting.

I never had any fault codes pop up from it, but the first time I towed a trailer the redarc controller slammed on the trailer brakes super hard at the end of the driveway - it actually left skid marks in the gravel. The thing is suppose to "learn" or calibrate itself as you go and after a little bit it did, but I definitely questioned it early on. Hope this helps a little, but yeah no codes from mine and the universal harness seems to have worked for me. I don't know if something changed between 2019 and 2022??

@@Pietop Yea. Apparently something is different. I've installed both the universal harness from Redarc and also the harness specifically for the 4runner. I got faults on each different install. I ended up taking it to a local dealer and they told me that they stopped selling the REDARC system for the new 4runners. According to them, they say that the brake controller technology of the REDARC hasn't caught up to the new technology that's in the new models. Something about the LED lights and the ABS system running off of lower voltage. It doesn't mate well with the system. Just wish I would've known that prior to spending the money. REDARC needs to make buyers aware of that. Which they don't. Actually the opposite.

@@two_legit1832 That's a huge strike against REDARC for me. I can understand how technology changes and things not being compatible anymore, but a company not disclosing that really sits wrong with me. Just curious - Is your local dealer going to be able to put a trailer brake in for you?

@@Pietop I completely agree with that. It's shady business on their part. The dealer recommended the Curt Echo since I didn't want an actual device mounted to the dash. Which was the selling point for the REDARC. I'm planning on buying the aftermarket bracket for the 7 pin harness on the runner that will allow the 7 pin plug to sit horizontal rather than down at an angle like it is factory. Once I do that I'll be getting a Curt Echo. The dealer said they sell those all the time. Over most other systems and they said as long you input your settings correctly they rarely ever give any problems. Guess I'll just have to eat the cost of the REDARC system. And BOTH harnesses that I purchased and installed. 😒

Does the head unit make any noise when being used? Is there any rattling from how it is mounted?
@Pietop
@Pietop Жыл бұрын
No noise at all. If you don't secure it tightly i could see where it might rattle but i was able to get mine solid the first time. I had to mount it at a weird angle though so keep that in mind because you'll see that it doesn't fit neatly under there.

Any trouble with burning a fuse from using the trailer brake controller first time?
