@@RedBeardOps idk if you ever noticed but the more polished blade is it's harder for the patina or cold blueing to set it. But more so a patina issue. I struggled to the point of frustration. Last blade i was doing i was lazy on the polish said screw it. Patina was much more efficient. I roughed up the other blades a tad it made a significant difference in all 5 of my blades i did a patina on.

Hobbies to avoid: telescope mirror making, ham radio, soaring, sailing, oboe playing, stock trading, golf, harmonica, and a few others. The knives I have made were made from rebar, so they are not as robust as the one in this video. For everyday carry, I like a Swiss Army knife... because it has a phillips screwdriver.

Great job as always James. I had a similar experience when I started making knives- but I purchased everything from Harbor Freight. I made a bunch of blades with minimal equipment- then moved to a 1x30- whatever it takes but the important thing is that is can be done.

I loved your honesty. Yes you can make a knife with cheep tools, yes it will work, yes the feeling of accomplishment is second to none, but to make something truly great it sometimes requires just that step above. That could be time, equipment, skill (from doing/learning) or just a continued love of what your doing and trying to better it and yourself. Either way for me nothing compares to the felling of achievement and the joy I get from making simple knives for my family and friends that I have been able to make from watching people like you. So thank you.

There are a couple of take-aways here, for me (a knife-making noob, but knife fan of over 40 years) 1) The chainsaw file plunge idea is inspired! How I wished I'd seen THAT idea when I started making this knife! 2) The chainsaw Spanish notch idea afterwards makes a lot of sense, too. Cheers James, for the info and PDF! thank you for not doing what a lot of idiots do with angle grinders and recommend gloves, just an FYI for anyone wondering what im talking about, if you wear gloves using a saw, angle grinder, table saw, anything with a circular motion ect. you risk it catching and pulling your hand or fingers into it resulting in losing a appendage or limb depending on the size.

One thing that is helpful with the angle grinder: Save worn sanding discs for the edge work. It will be slower, but a little more forgiving. Still must be careful though. Same is true of cut off wheels. I save some that have worn down (smaller radius) to get into tight spots. Dont take them all the way down to the drive-dog of course- they will break apart at some point.

I'm currently making a knife for a friend using ordinary hand tools and a thought occurred to me. Know the difference between a $50 knife and a $500 knife? About 5 hours of polishing. I don't make a lot of knives and I've never sold one (I manage to give them away) so I'm making him a $50 knife. Thanks for your tutorial, it will definitely help beginning knife makers on a budget. As far as epoxy goes, 5 minute set time epoxy will hold up for a while, but it isn't waterproof and will deteriorate after several years, 60 minute set epoxy is waterproof and wont deteriorate the same way 5 minute will (it can last upwards of 30 years)

5 minute epoxy has a much lower melting point. It’s great for glueing fishing rod tip guides as you can remove/ reposition the guide using a butane lighter to soften the epoxy. But, use slow set epoxy for scales.

Interesting and well explained and discussed as always, good stuff. I couldn't help but cringe at the end with the testing hehe. Yea it looked a bit cold when you quenched but that's the limit of that method as you said and the little brick forge will overcome that for very little extra outlay.

If you REALLY have a lot of time you could make a knife using only a file, I actually tried it and only got it really roughly shaped it took about 40 hours in total or maybe less but I almost lost my mind.

PPE: Short story.... 20 years ago I was in at 1 of the big 3. Back before all this technology so I was fortunate to have that job. When it came to rules/ regulations of course we needed PPE, but no headphones. They provided the ear protection. I was 19 and wanted music but my job more. There was this guy 1 machine over who did wear phones and lost his arm shoulder and bit of his left ear. I learned real smart real quick about the policy protection for our ears not distraction from our jobs. Had to be aware enough to hear the machines when they go off, or back up, or any sound they should not be making. Ready to hit the BIG RED button when needed. Yes I did say when not if. So filing away with a file .... sure have some shop music from a radio. But please don't plug your ears with music to the point you can't hear your equipment. Thanks guys
