Brazil isn’t a country known for its big waves and yet, over the past decade, Brazilians have been dominating the world of surfing. But why tho? Filmmaker Andy Burgess explores what it is about athletes like Lucas “Chumbo” Chianca, Mateus Herdy, Carlos Burle, Rodrigo Koxa and more that have led them to become champions of the surfing world, despite not growing up in big wave surfing hostpots.

Hey guys, thanks so much for checking out this video! Was a lot of fun to make, I'd love to know in this thread who your favourite Brazilian Surfer is? Also if you want to see more videos about Brazil, I have a recent episode about the history of Samba in the Favelas.

First off. Mad love to my South American brothers and sisters. 2nd everything they touch turns to gold. Skating, surfing, race car driving, even bullriding and of course football (soccer). They dominate, love that a 3rd world country with no infrastructure for surfing produces the best surfers. Me being Peruvian, having the history and geography love to see my brothers and sisters from South America dominate. Thank you for posting this vid. Its only going up for all. Obrigado Brazil!

Sports that don’t require huge amounts of technology are far easier for “lesser countries” (budget wise) to compete and excel. It’s why exhibition/demonstration sports at the olympics often see more evenly distributed medals until the larger countries start funding those sports and they gain both a technical and training advantage that produces better results. Another factor is the emergence of heroes that can drive the popularity of the sport in said area. What you’re seeing is the first gen of Brazilians coming of age who grew up with Brazilian surfers as heroes. It’s no different than when a city gets a pro sports team for the first time and one generation later you will start to see more top level athletes in that sport emerge from that area. This is just anecdotal observations over the years, specifically with sports teams and how they influence youth and that generational effect is quite obvious.

That's true, well said man. I grew up in Rio, I'm a little older then those guys today in tour (Medina, Ítalo, Dória), but in my school, every one of the boys used to surf, much because of my dad's generation, that were those guys he mentioned in the doc, the first ones that went to Hawaii, Califa, in the late 70's, mid 80's. We grew up hearing about Fábio Gouveia, Bocão, Rico, Padaratz... And now, the next generation Man... Woooww...

Fleisbester .. bad example, Brazil, Uruguay, Columbia compete on par with economic powerhouses. The more a sport costs the less likely you see athletes from poorer countries excel. Not to mention you missed the point where I mentioned it’s more noticeable with newer or emerging sports.

The key ingriedient of brazillian dominance is passion. We have a culture where we are passionate about the lifestyle we choose to live for. It brings intensity, we like to sharpen our skills, each detail, because we have passion for what we are doing. And in every sport we turn our hearts too and we got a minimum of support, we do very weel. We saw this on football the most, but also Skateboarding, Formula 1, Formula Indy, Volleyball, MMA, BJJ, e-Sports...

No money no sport. That's the main dilemma of Brazil and South African 🏄. O bagui no Braza e doido, o atleta tem que matar um leao por dia pra viver.

Brazil has been dominant in many sports over time: football, Formula 1, Mix Martial Arts, BJJ, volleyball, skating and now surfing.

I’ll tell you why. What American/Australian surfer at a high level has had a super hard time financially growing up where the only way to succeed was pure ambition. Answer? Not many. Most American/Australian surfers at a high level come from massive wealth and endless industry connections. I mean how motivated can you be when you grow up in a million dollar plus home and sponsorships are just handed to you??

It’s kind of annoying the amount of times this narrator says ‘the waves in Brazil are bad’, ‘despite the bad waves in Brazil’ - the waves in Brazil are good! Saquarema is a spot on the WSL mens tour, all of Florianopolis and other parts of the south of Brazil have many spots with high quality. To say the waves are bad is like a joke, I surf regularly in Scotland yes I can tell you about bad waves!
