25:44 in the age of internet where SEO has taken over, Reddit is so invaluable. During the blackout I really realized how many useful reddit posts I can’t see(details abt a concert venue, my Twitter bookmarks not working, etc. I used Reddit semi-regular for like two years, and over the past few days have learned a lot about the platform. The fact they didn’t have an official app till 2016 and all their moderators are sub volunteers like other sms that post people is wild!! It’s really sad because it’s become the home of a lot of niches and community information. I saved hundreds of dollars & gained for much perspective from ACTUAL students from my university’s subreddit the summer before I transferred. I hope the blackouts impact their business to enough to listen to users.

@@toptiertech7291 There isn't enough volunteer hours available to moderate a lot of the larger subs without the help of 3rd party tools. So even if they remove the mods and give someone else mod privliges they're not going to be able to moderate the sub according to Reddit's sub moderation standard so the subs will just be banned or unmoderated. Neither senario is a good one for Reddit. It's actually facinating because Reddit has over the years made more and more rules for how subs need to be moderated which has made the user experience really great, but they've never provided mods with the tools needed to moderate subs according to those rules. Most communities that have been around for 5 years or more have done all nighters to make/configure 3rd party tools to moderate their community in accordance to new rules just because they're so passionate about the commuity and don't want to see it dissapear.

one thing you missed about the new YPP requirements, that i think would be worth clarifying next week, is that the new lowered requirements don’t allow you to put ads on your videos, they just get you into fan funding such as super chats. you still have to get 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 watch hours for ads.

You are not a consumer of social media. You are the product. Advertisers are the consumer. Reddit is about to IPO and to do so they need to generate disclosure and reporting documents that are approved by the SEC. Play Store and App Store figures provided by third party apps are one way to validate that reddit is reporting the right number of eyeballs. Reddit has to get rid of these apps so that it can count bot and sockpuppet activity as legit users and inflate their numbers for the IPO--just like Meta and Google have been doing for decades at this point. What is an "impression"?--it's horseshit. BigMouth Elon blurted out about bot activity when he was in negotiations to buy twitter and has been silent about it ever since--ever wonder why? We can pretend Spez is an irrational moron, or we can figure out exactly what he's doing.

@@jaimeduncan6167 nobody is against actual charges. People are against them being too high. It's estimated that Reddit charges about 20 times more money per user, than it takes them to actually service the user themselves. App developers would be plenty happy if the price was reduced 8 times or so - would be about in line with another service, such as Imgur. Also, the official Reddit app is pretty crap, and Reddit also has been test-driving a new "feature" on their mobile website - inability to log in. Just to force users on the app. Bad practices, high prices, bad UI/UX buggy app.

Twitch's video player and style of ad placement (completely interrupting the content) is terrible. But Twitch's chat, game categories/browsing, discoverability for finding new streamers to watch, and their APIs, all that's great. KZfaq (at least for livestreams) has terrible chat, APIs, and discoverability/categories, but has an amazing video player. If I'm not chatting and I'm just going to passively watch then I definitely prefer watching on KZfaq, even just being able to scrub back a few minutes when I join a bit late and watch at 2x speed to catch up is amazing, but if I want to actually interact with the stream and chat (such as with the integrated polls, or all the interactive stream overlays where viewers can directly click parts of the video player to interact), or find a new streamer to watch and chat with, I'm going for Twitch.

People said the same think when twitter monetized the blue tick. But Reddit got it absolutely right. They created a platform which is hella additctive and people spend way too much time on it. In addition, the moderators are on their own power trip. So Reddit decided to make more money off these addicts and this is absolutely good business sense.

Twitch's size restriction, for context, 3% of a 1920x1080 stream is 250x250, decently sized but no idea why attempt to enforce restrictions.

I have a suspicion about why KZfaq doesn't try harder to compete against Twitch. Well, more than one idea. 1. KZfaq tried for a bit. They pushed KZfaq Gaming for a while there, and it just didn't take, despite their efforts. 2. I believe Twitch has rules saying your stream can't appear on any other platform until 24 hours after it airs on Twitch, so the transition path is not great. 3. The paid subscription model is just really different, and KZfaq probably didn't want to put in the work to make a comparable model that would pretty much just support gaming and similar streams. 4. KZfaq has a very different relationship with copyrighted audio than Twitch does. I think Twitch will let you stream songs that you don't have rights to, at least as a part of your audio, and they won't do much about it until replay (when they blank out the affected audio). KZfaq immediately gives the video revenue to the (claimed) rights holder, which means a streamer can accidentally lose the revenue for a whole stream. 5. Totally different channel / creator discovery models.

The strength and reddit for me has always been the fact that these communities are so strong that the people who are part of them genuinely care enough that you get quick and accurate information about super specific topics. Quora also has a community of people who genuinely care about the topics they discuss or comment on because why would they be on core to begin with? The difference is they're way more people on Reddit. The responses are almost always immediate. It's honestly unparallel to any other platform that I've used. And I'm talking niche topics like something about an old board game or an old part from an antiquated piece of technology, or something more common like specifics about script writing. Whatever it is, I've always found genuinely passionate community of people who are willing to help and point you in the right direction and offer you information and guidance. And I think a big part of that are the moderators. Because of the moderators, the people that are part of subreddits are usually the people who care about the topic and they're not trolls.

Reddit issue will definitely blow over. No one has leverage over what Reddit will do over its API, the 3rd party app thought they did but not anymore. The only way is not to play, but that's not gonna happen.

I think the big issue with the way we categorize social media is that we moved from "social network" platforms to the umbrella term "social media". And though I understand the days of MySpace are dead and Facebook for that matter, Social network should really be platforms where you build relationships, reconnect, establish community conversations. So today we have Twitter, Facebook, Reddit etc. Social media should be strictly places where you consume and create media in an online social platform. So KZfaq, Tick Tock, Crunchyroll (because it allows you to post comments which I feel like Netflix should have an option for) and Instagram. Then you have communication tools like WhatsApp that I believe can fall into the social network bucket. But even though most of these platforms are broadening the services they offer, there should be a clear distinction between KZfaq and Facebook or KZfaq and Twitter. KZfaq is just a place I consume content and the interactions in the comments section, although entertaining is secondary. By that definition, Facebook has moved from a social network to social media as well.

I don’t think that KZfaq bands all third-party apps because you can only get third-party apps on kindle fire tablet. This I believe is because Amazon didn’t want to load all of the Google apps on their version of android. But I don’t know if there is an official, API or companies just make one for themselves and I don’t know how official the Apps are on Kindle App Store. I think they just look the other way because it’s such a small market and it looks good to competition commissions to say that they allow this to happen. With android
