For a multitude of different reasons, Sonic Frontiers turned out to be a huge success! A more serious story, more ambitious game play, a renewed focus on the characters! But did this new focus work? Is the extended cast any more important by the end of Frontiers than they were by the end of Sonic Forces? Knuckles is one of the most well known characters in the Sonic the Hedgehog series, as well as one of its longest standing cast members! Becoming the original rival of Sonic the Hedgehog all the way back in 1994! Through the Death Egg saga, Perfect Chaos, the Ark incident with Shadow the Hedgehog, Neo Metal Sonic, The Time Eater, Infinite? Knuckles has been by Sonic's side through it all, but that last decade has been very tough for his character. So how does he fair in Sonic Frontiers? After such a long time of being either dumb, or completely inconsequential, is it even possible to redeem Knuckles the Echidna? There is a lot of rebuilding that needs to be done here to return our beloved Guardian to his former Glory! So let's analyze how Knuckles fit into the story of Sonic Frontiers, and how it might impact his character going forward! Ian Flynn has done a LOT of good for the IDW Sonic series, but does that transfer to his first time writing for the game series?

Knuckles needs a Metroidvania. His connection to the Chaos Emeralds gives him powers as he collects the emeralds one by one to take back Angel Island after being away for so long. Knuckles can lash himself about shirking his duties while also admitting the fun he had while he was away. His struggle to find a way to balance his duties while still enjoying life would make great drama.

Uh more linear in the style of metroid 2, where you have to explore 7 inteconected zones looking for 1 emerald in each one? This sounds like an interesting game. Maybe adventure 1 power ups working like metroidvania style power ups aswell.

I'm honestly not expecting any spin off games, but I'd love it if they did. Frontiers sets them up perfectly, with everybody wanting to go do their own thing after this adventure. And having character specific spin offs would be an ideal way to fully develop gameplay styles for each of them, without having to assign development time to anything else, so they'll actually be properly considered & fleshed out. From that point on, they'd have a base to work with to more easily integrate them into a mainline game without them feeling like half arsed secondary campaigns, like they have previously. Plus you can't tell me Knuckles doesn't just make perfect sense for an exploration based collectathon style game! Quite honestly, he fits the genre far more than Sonic himself does!

When Knuckles was freed from Cyber Space and said it was like a nightmare it made me think "Well this just makes things worse for Tails who's still trapped" only for him to not seem all that fazed by it when you get to Chaos Island. But as you say considering Cyber Space was based on the individuals' memories, Knuckles experience might have been the worst of the bunch for that reason. It reminded me of how Generations started with Tails talking about what a terrifying experience being frozen by the Time Eater was but everyone else seems relatively fine when they're freed.

I also like that tails' experience in the cyberspace was basically having to face the person he became and remember how badass he once was. I like that when we free him, he's firstly fine but slowly starts to crumble in self doubt till we get to the iconic "am i a burden to you?" scene. I know how it feels to be in a turmoil while trying to not appear like it, and tails in frontiers definitely felt that way.

@@Canalbiruta I'm replaying Chaos Island now and seeing Tails talk about getting confronted by another him makes me very hopeful for when the new playable characters content drops because it sounds like such a good sequence to get to experience firsthand as Tails.

I'm not sure if she said this on Ares Island but if she were talking about Knuckles that would make so much sense now to me :D Awesome Job btw! In Sonic X's (Subbed) Shadow had to take off his limiters just to *barely* defeat him in an episode of Season 3. It was downright criminal that the dub version cut out the part about the limiters.

@@Abner-gu3veLet's not sell Him short either, remember the limiters also keep Shadow from just imploding. He's the result of science and genetic engineering. Knuckles is just raw strength and without ever using chaos Emeralds has taken down people. And hit Sonic OUT of Super form. Not to mention there was like a comic run where some evil force got ahold of his body and used it to take down most of the cast and a comic cover was literally just soulless bodies and a deformed Knuckles looming in front of them.

Prime own is different because it is a damn video game and knuckles voice in prime if I show you,You will not want to watch Sonic prime and Shadow’s voice is knuckles voice not the voice for Shadow we were expecting

It all depends if Iizuka lets him do what he does best. If Ian's got full creative freedom with the characters, I trust even Shadow will be a great character again. If Iizuka and his mandates are in play, then I'm expecting more meta era shitty writing

The only reason why they said only hedgehogs can go "Super" is because they knew if I went Super then the story would have been over and done with in the Fronters prologue. The Titans wouldn't have been able to survive past me. Straight body bags. 💪🏾🤨💪🏾

I think like how the knuckles short foreshadows the fact that the Chao are descended from the Coco by having a Chao trying to grab a Coco face from rubble. Something many of us probably didn't think much about. Idk.

People like you always reassure me that there are genuine fans out there who care about the well being of the Sonic franchise. And I dare even say, get inspired to make up my own stories with the characters as well as artwork! Never let go of that optimism Mark. After all, we Sonic fans gotta stick together!

also i did not just enjoy knuckles characterisation in sonic frontiers , i was glad that they treated the way they did in this game which regardless of missed opportunities , it respected what his character supposed to be , given that i watched the second movie and enjoyed it and his characterisation , so the game had a lot to prove to continue this momentum

Frontiers really helped bring back a lot of character to the main classic cast. I do hope at least, they do the same with the adventure to 06 characters.

When I played the game, I noticed the theme of every character trying an adventure on their own and I knew Flynn was setting up for these guys to get their own games. I hope the friend group sticks around through those games though because it wouldn’t feel complete with the full dynamic. Really excited for Sega’s future!

My idea for the games Amy goes on an adventure with Cream and Sticks to spread love and passion around the world Knuckles travels to exotic and ancient locations that have more detail about his history while Sonic guards the Master Emerald for him Tails takes on a powerful villain without the help of Sonic and achieves a Super form in the final battle.

I'd think it would be nice if Knuckles were the leader of a group for a change (either the Chaotix, Bean, Bark and Knack, or maybe even Tangle and Whisper) what the gameplay might look like, idk, but it would be nice if there were times in the game where it built the universe or some of the groundwork for it, while also delving into the individual backstories or story building for Knuckles and his travel companions.

No Sonic story is perfect, but this is the best we've had in so long. It's like the meta era never happened and the characterisation started in Sonic Adventure never ended and these characters just kept growing and I love it.

There's a lot about how this series has progressed over time that I thought I wanted them to just throw away. Retcon the nonsense out, start fresh with a soft reboot, and pretend the Colors era never happened... especially Forces. But Frontiers managed to change my mind. Flynn treated these characters with so much respect for their history, and rather than simply throw away the past 13 years in favor of a better story the easy way, he chose to work with what he was given and actually redeem it instead of discarding it. Seeing Tails acknowledge how dependent and cowardly he'd become and start to heal, seeing Amy actually exist outside of obsessing over Sonic, and especially seeing Knuckles finally be stoic instead of stupid again... it makes me feel like the series' dark ages were worth it. I'll probably never like most of that era's storytelling, but Frontiers showed me that it doesn't have to be ignored for the series to return to form.

if the twitter takeover is anything to go by Shadow is back. Judging from the fact that sonic was calmer more like his adventure self during not as interruptive adhd random. Shadow was also more calmer less like when he had an identity crisis during his own game more calm collected like during 06. The characterization during the takeover seems to imply as such anyways.

If knuckles got a spin off, i'd want it to be a Free Roam Beat Em Up/Treasure Hunting platformer. Make Knuckles a Fierce Warrior and Treasure Hunter like in the Sonic Film from 1998.

I liked Sonic Forces because I was hopeful to seeing Knuckles as a leader. I'm from the sonic adventure era and believed that they characterised him well. Only to see Knuckles be a background drop with Amy doing most of the things. I'm glad Sonic Frontier took the time to make each area about each characters and their relationship with Sonic. It really helped deeper flesh them and the kind of interractions they have. See better what they values are and how they deal with their thoughts. I just hope they keep those characterisation as I really liked how they fleshed them, brought back some past characterisation and kept it in a way that new and old fan can recognise the character.

I've said this many times over the years and on other channel's comment sections. We need a Knuckles the Echidna spin-off game. The gameplay mechanics can be a mixture of his treasure-hunting gameplay from SA 1 & 2 with action/adventure style combat & free-roaming. It'll have an Indiana Jones feel to it. The story would be a prequel taking place sometime after the events of SA1. Knuckles meets Rogue the Bat for the first time as one of the main antagonists trying to take the master emerald as well as a brand new gang of bandits doing so separately. While Rogue Knuckles, and the bandits fight over the emerald, the fight causes the emerald to shatter into pieces and and the pieces scatter all around the Island. Knuckles has to find all the pieces before either Rogue or the Bandits do. During the search, Knuckles will have to fend off Bandit members, Rogue herself as well as other creatures native to the island. Maybe the emerald shards caused some of the little critters to mutate into bigger beasts and go on a rampage. Maybe The bandits Knuckles beats up drops gear that he wears in order to help him further along in the game. Maybe one of items dropped is a familiar-looking safari hat and Knuckles wears for the rest of the game. I think that would be a fantastic concept for a Knuckles solo game. Any thoughts from you on this concept?

as a Knuckles fan, i'm really relieved to see how Knuckles was written in Sonic Frontiers, and i can confidently say that is one of the many reasons it's my favorite recent sonic game. i do hope Knuckles gets his own spin-off game, too! actually i hope Tails and Amy do as well. the ending of Frontiers would be the perfect set-up for it. one of the top comments have said it better than i can say without committing plagiarism. honestly ever since the 2nd Sonic Movie, the team's writers have been treating Knuckles with all the respect he deserves after so long and finally tossing Boom Knuckles to the side to bring our old non-chuckler back!! i really hope it keeps going this direction, as it seems to be with Sonic Frontiers and also TailsTube.

I'm down for sonic crying out of fear from bodies of water or when being forced into slow things. Just not out of grief, or that would be out of character for him. I want shadow to play the important role of facing off against hidden antagonists like in 06 and rivals. Omega would fit well in frontiers. Especially with the combat, then it would really be like DMC or any teen rating combat game. I'm not sure about rouge, though. Doing treasure hunting and spy missions are good enough. I also think that rouge's strength should be compared to knuckles in a way as how batman is comparable to superman. I just don't buy rouge being as strong as knuckles. I would prefer Blaze to only be included in the sonic rush games, and not be in sonic's dimension like she belongs in it. She's the sonic of her dimension. That royal fire cat needs more world building and more characters like marine. The same would go for silver. But unlike blaze, silver actually lives in sonic's dimension and he would just be called out via time capsule or anything that would cause him to travel to sonic's timeline. But he needs to show much impact when he's in the present. And he should not be nerfed. Silver can just be weak to darkness, but that's it. If silver feels too overpowered then he should just remain in his timeline with people or foes that are just as OP as him.

Despite not doing anything tangible Knuckles and Tails were saved by Frontiers. Ian should have been gotten hired as the writer. He already vastly improved the writing quality. It helps that gameplay wise Frontiers is really good as well.

I have listened to several people discuss Knuckles' depiction in this game, and surprisingly, you're the very first I've heard discuss how odd (and mildly hypocritical) it is for him to claim Sonic is "too trusting." Especially on how it represents growth in his character. Good on you for that.

Your pure appreciation for Knuckles made me sub. Good analysis. There's just something about that charcater trope of an "honourable, badass, stoic warrior" who's a bit a dork with a a pinch of that "fish-out-of-water" cluelessness/naivete. It's a delight that he's now on his character writing redemption arc, and it'll be crazy to think what future games will do with the set-up gotten from Frontiers. (Now he's _officially_ allowed to leave M.E. and go do some stuff on his own without seeming out of character.) Meanwhile we've got the upcoming liveaction series so Knuckles fans will be eating. :)

Me too knuckles been my favorite for a long time deserved his respect and hugs and cuddle and cookies and grape he is awesome and badass and it is not his fault he been trick by eggman since he been on angel Island for a long time with nobody with him no friends no family no one just guardian the master emerald or I wish people can stop criticize call him stupid and dumb and native he isn't any of that he is smart as well. And beside it is the writers fault who made him dumb and the butt of the joke in the first place they should made his characteristics better but no I am happy he getting the respect and redemption he deserves and I am happy they are still knuckles fans out th3y the love they red echidna that we know in love in our hearts.

This analysis is amazing! I didn’t even look that deep into Knuckles telling Sonic that “he was too trusting.” It genuinely shows his development in Sonic Frontiers. Seriously excited for the DLC!

I was definitely a fan of Knuckles characterization in Frontiers. The bro moments had me worried about the shippers, as I felt they'd read into it. I really enjoyed that they made him into a history buff in the game. Makes me want to see him pursue archeology. A lot of people already view him as a treasure hunter, and that wouldn't be too far from it. Perhaps they could even give him his Cowboy hat for a spinoff. I really think he'd fit in a beat'em'up 3D platformer.

Knux going from a naive warrior to a dumb*ss to a more grounded warrior who actually learned from his past was something that made me wonder if I was dreaming or not. Knowing it was legit, I felt happy. I honestly do hope we get spinoffs of each character.

It would be cool to see Knuckles, Tails, and Amy being in there own spin-off games. I know Knuckles and Tails have had they're own spin-off games, except for Amy. Speaking of these characters, Sega did confirmed DLC for Sonic Frontiers. First one adding music and photo mode, 2nd DLC adding something for Sonic's birthday and some new Koco and new challenges, and in the 3rd DLC Knuckles, Tails, and Amy will be playable! Plus, a new story as well. My guess is that this new story will probably focus on these characters while they were stuck in cyberspace. Or something. Whatever it is, I'm looking forward to playing these characters. :)

Compared to everything from 2010-2017 (I mean that as 2017 was the last time a mainline series Sonic game was released) the story for Frontiers was far more heavily focused on than that of previous games that had either little, to quite literally none (Looking at you Generations). The game set out to prove itself that Sonic team (if given enough time) can properly write a story with those who genuinely have passion for the franchise, and not those who have only learned about it through Wikipedia.

you know , i wonder some times why people felt upset regarding knuckles in the boom era regarding how he was portrayed in the tv show , like i get how any one feel that way regarding the character in the rise of lyric game , but come on , i always thought that this is a tv show , so it's not like the character got ruined just because they do him dirty in some thing out side the games , and it's really some thing that can not do ANY THING TO the character perception in the eyes of fans , yes the games did not help any way but eventually we got frontiers and it was worth the wait

I don't remember anything about chronicles but i do remember something being knuckles related in it. And the fact that it recanonized super knuckles after that whole 06 and heroes debacle with frontiers doubling down saying hey super knuckles still can be a thing.

Hopefully the success of this video and the Eggman video will encourage you to do the rest of the cast as well! Amy might be weakest of the remaining three, as I'm including Sonic as well due to his greater maturity for this game, but at least Tails deserves a video as well, given that he himself calls out his own inconsistency.

@@lala-jd6emso did you know? Amy used to be capable of supernatural abilities like inflicting curses, invisibility, predicting faith and where a certain person is. Her pico pico hammer was even stated to be magical in sonic the fighters, and that's the game where that hammer originated. Nowadays, she just seemed as physically capable as knuckles and hardly shows anything paranormal or magical in sonic prime or in idw. It would great if amy gets to use those abilities again in the frontiers dlc.

GOOD VIDEOOOOOOOOO GOOD VIDEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO you dont dissapoint!!!! The onyl thing that you prolly got wrong is that this isnt a TONE setter for the future of the series as everything else, sure, the stories will aim to take themselves more seriously, but the mellow tone is specific to THIS game i am PRETTY sure which im excited about cuz i wanna see them in game form on an exciting adventure, i wanna see more of amy's peppyness in a game!! aah! is gonna be good

There were actually two S3&K references in the Super Sonic cutscene with Knuckles. He references his super form, and Super Sonic flinches away from Knuckles' punch. That's a reference to the fact that Knuckles is the only guy capable of hurting Super Sonic without the use of the emeralds or something similarly powerful.

Since I first got into Sonic back during the late dark ages, the original trio(Sonic, Tails and Knuckles), were always the bestest of friends in my eyes. When I learned about the Classic games during my elementary school years, I was intrigued and curious about the deeper lore that took place before the events of the Classic games. Frontiers was the game that finally got the Sonic fanbase in agreement with a good game for the first time since 2011 and while it has it’s issues, this is the first time since Black Knight where there was a Sonic I didn’t want to climb into the tv and strangle the daylights out of. The Meta Era in my opinion is the true dark age of the series as it’s filled with missed potential, sidelining of popular characters, terrible story, terrible dialogue, cookie cutter at best gameplay and just a glorious amount of fear at failure following 06.

I was really glad to see what they did with Knuckles in Frontiers. That and Sonic Movie 2 actually redeemed him for me. The way he acted from the ending of Forces right up to the end of the Metal Virus saga left a really bad taste in my mouth about Knuckles. The way that when the Resistance was over and became the Restoration he just up and left, then all but refused to help during the Metal Virus outbreak until he pretty much had no choice too, and even then he wasn't happy about it. Frontiers gave me hope for Knuckles again, something I've been waiting to have for a long time now. 🙂

Not playable in frontiers yet. Forces had UGH episode shadow this does mean there is potential for dlc focusing on side characters.

I would say that isolating the characters in Cyberspace was the writers way of forcing themselves to ask a key question, "if given time for introspection, what answers would these characters come to with Sonic's help?" Amy realizes she wants to spread as much love as she can in the world. Knuckles sees just how much his duty has left him isolated from the world and how deep down he never really wanted the life that was forced on him. Tails sees how much of his potential is being wasted due to clinging on Sonic for protection. All of them now have the resolve to break their own stagnation because they were put into a situation where they had no choice but to reflect on themselves.

One scene that stood out was one of the "Extra Story" bits where Knuckles talks about ancient architecture (or something, I don't remember exactly). Just that he...knows stuff. He's not dumb, he has knowledge, not on everything, but he knows what he knows and doesn't know nothing. This comment makes no sense

I understand there will be DLC with more playable characters, but we don’t know how in depth they will be or what they will involve yet. And they still weren’t part of the base experience. Glad you enjoyed the video though. 🙂

I honestly feel a good way they could do a spin off game for knuckles would be something like the ps4 Spider man Series. Where he mostly goes on little adventures, helping people out, etc. The big man's out and hopefully going to see the world that he's missed out on for a plethora of years now. Yes, there could also be times where he has to go back to Angel Island, but I'd hope they plan it where it doesn't feel like it's crammed in there.

I hope knuckles plays well in the frontiers dlc. Make him(base form) fight enemies that are atleast near the level of the titan bosses.

A Knuckles spin-off game, for me, would need to focus on fast-paced brawls (akin to the prologue animation) with lots of combos, chaos powers, and environmental destruction. But also lots of exploration and puzzle solving in the context of exploring archaeological sites. Appearances and team-ups of other members of the cast in a similar manner to Shadow's game, but more meaningful interactions would be good too. And of course it's the perfect opportunity to reintroduce Super Knuckles. I would definitely like non-Eggman villains though - a shame SEGA can't use Enerjak or Dr Finitevus, as those were some of the best concepts to come out of the archie comics... Either way, the franchise could really use more recurring villains - another aspect of the comics I loved. A Knuckles game series would be brilliant for wider lore building in the franchise. Although there's a lot of other spinoffs I'd like to see too (Detective Adventure Chaotix game, Rift Apart Styled Silver & Blaze game with the return of Eggman NEGA as antagonist, and another Shadow the Hedgehog or team dark attempt with hopes they'll finally return to greatness!)

My idea for the story is that Knuckles fulfills his dream of traveling the world while Sonic volunteers to guard the Master Emerald for him. He battles various new bandits including Mecha Knuckles MK 2. Sense Mecha Sonic from S3&K is built for brute force rather than speed, Mecha Knuckles’ strength will be insane.

You know, I really liked most of the "Meta era" games (Not Forces, though) and found them to be better than the Dreamcast era... *BUT* I fully agree with you that Knuckles has been done dirty ever since Sonic Rush turned him into "Am Angry! Must! Punch! ROCKS!!!" and I'm glad he's gotten a fair shake for the first time in over a decade. It's good to have him back again. :D

My problem with frontiers' story is that the cutscenes are muscularly short. The scene of him and Sonic talking about his future is like, 30 seconds long so it feels kinda out of nowhere, unlike Tails in Chaos where the whole thing is about his insecurities, Knux only opens up about needing to go out and live at the very end of Ares. I still love the new direction for him and the rest of the cast as it finally presents a change in the status quo, but I think that for him, it could've been a little better paced.

Knuckles has been restored to his former glory and can't wait to see how the DLC treats him. I like what Frontiers did with Knuckles, Tails and Eggman. They were easily the highlights in terms of characterization, Knuckles was my favorite by far. I just wish the same could be said for my favorite character. lol

Do you think Shade would have been a good companion for Knuckles. He could have had some company while he’s guarding the Master Emerald. If only Shade, Emperor Ix, the Nocturnus Clan, and Sonic Chronicles as a whole wasn’t erased from the Sonic universe.

Honestly? Sonic Free Riders to Sonic Forces is where we really see the worst of writing the Sonic series has had for years. While Sonic Boom gave him an entirely new character, he was more of brawn over brains character for comedic effect, which was a big stray from how he was originally best portrayed. I never seen Knuckles as dumb. Yeah, he was gullible, what did you expect from a character that had barely any outside contact until he met Eggman. Frontiers was the best back to form of writing we had for him and I love it!

Hm, how very interesting, it’s good that Knuckles’ Character is finally put back to a good direction, let’s just hope that SEGA follows-up upon it. Honestly, it’s going to be interesting regardless to see where these Characters and the Franchise are going to go now after Frontiers, I hope they doesn’t screw it up again. By the way, have you heard that Knuckles and the other Cyber Prisoners are apparently going to be playable in a DLC?
