On this week’s episode, we tag along with Midwest Whitetail editor Gavin Koterba as he takes us through a multi year quest that ends with him tagging his biggest buck to date. After making the move to Iowa to chase his dream, Gavin's goal has been to shoot a buck on public land. With years of scouting under his belt, multiple encounters with giant bucks, and an attitude to learn as much as possible along the way, hopes were extremely high going into the 2023 deer season. Follow along on the roller coaster ride that ultimately ends in Gavin tagging his biggest buck ever. We are so fortunate to have Gavin as a part of today’s MW landscape. Not only from a production standpoint, but he is such a refreshing throwback to early MW as a story teller. Daniel, first and foremost thank you much for taking the time to watch the entire episode! Gavin's journey for this buck was one we really were excited to share. On the note of the snow, there's no doubt that it made ALL the difference for us on the track. Early on we definitely would have made the attempt at locating a dog to aid us in the recovery. Human eyes without snow would have struggled immensely, a dog we think would have been successful. All in all though it's a memory none of us will soon forget and we hope you enjoyed the show. Hlubkoj1011, we're right there with you on the snow! It made the difference no doubt in being able to track not on the pin drop blood but the actual tracks of the buck as well. Awesome Buck there I’m A 30 year veteran with 64 archery kills 11 pope n young bucks. Shot expandable heads for 3 seasons without that exit hole it makes it tougher. Quit those heads went back to 3 blade fixed pass through Every time @ 65 lbs something to think about Keep up the awesome footage love watching Keep in mind with snow I stay on the blood slowly only because coyotes! I bumped em out of their beds and eventually they are done without feeding those coyotes!

The lack of penetration was scary. I think a one-inch hole straight through is much better than a 2-inch hole with no exit. Glad you got him, that was a great video that ended well.

Congratulations awesome story I definitely would sit back in the off-season and probably switch up some things. I don’t know what your arrow weight is, but I would definitely take that consideration and maybe bump it up a little bit more but all in all great story congratulations again and hopefully you can get another monster on the ground before the season ends.

First off congratulations. Did you see any wound from the first shot and if so where was it? One word of advice for next season tune that bow, those arrows were flying like corkscrews.

In the tree, video shows an expandable head being used, when they find the deer, he is using a "fixed" blade. Will never understand why people continue to use expandable heads. Mechanical devices, "can and will fail", that is just a fact. The shot appeared to have gotten the heart, so what happened? Did the blade not fully expand?

Your arrow did not deflect. That deer was hard quartering towards you at the shot. Exit wound is right in line with arrow travel. Congrats on a great IA buck!!

So they clearly don’t understand trajectory or the internal structure of a deer. His leg was back and you shot behind the shoulder, missing the lungs. The arrow didn’t deflect. It went straight. Not to “hate” on the hunt or whatever the simps are going to say. Just stating facts.

That sir is a public land monarch! I love to hunt public land in Missouri around me. We have some giants in the woods if your willing to put in the work. Buck of a lifetime sir I was genuinely in knots while yall was tracking him. Excellent job finding him it never surprises me just how tough whitetail deer are.

Jim, I hate to say it, but the response to your comment form MW says it all. Classy group. I just don’t get the comments at times. I’m really dumbfounded by some of the hate out there. Gavin explains it extremely well and you can tell he takes the mistakes to heart. Mad props to these guys for consistently putting it out there to some of the harshest critics on the planet! If it weren’t for my love of reliving my hunts, I wouldn’t share my footage at all. Maybe someday it will make sense, but I sure wish everyone the best and as hunters. The one thing we must do is stay strong together.
