Hey y'all! This is Christopher in the Cayenne. I such had a great time out there with all of you and cannot thank you enough for bringing us along and for being patient after the heat and the sand freaked out the computers. Fortunately the purpose for which we build them (there are 3 more just like it) does not involve sand, but it was a good test of the platform that your team made into an awesome experience. Thank you again for being so good at what you do and for being as nice and cool and genuine in real life as you appear on camera. You're a great group of people and we can't wait to wheel with you again (maybe I'll bring my locked and lifted Scout next time though :)

As someone who loves your VinWiki stories above all others, it was amazing seeing your "cameo" in that episode. When will the Porsche episodes be up on VinWiki? Next time you need to bring "El Chapo" down. Did you make your dinner with the B-52s?

Not sure if you knew this but the best way to reset your Porsche and the faults that were causing issues is to close the doors and windows and lock it with the key for a minute. The faults will still be in the computers but the car will usually reset the safety stops that was causing your issues

I ran my own construction crew for a couple decades: one thing I would love to see you guys do is just get a 5 gallon water jug and fill it up with ice everyday.. Make a mount on the wrecker so it's always there (you should have one on every vehicle honestly). But that way, you always have extra water with you-- it's always iced down. You can use it as coolant if something happens, etc. etc. I never went anywhere with my crew without having a full jug of water--- and any time I forgot to fill it, it was immediate regret after only a couple hours; even if we all had drinks. Having that water jug just boosts morale too. I'd love to see it integrated into your gear. It's hard to live without it once you have one there all the time: plus it's easier on your crew, so they don't have to keep buying drinks all the time and wasting their money. Free water FTW

AGREED temperature and time of day makes a huge difference when dealing with sand. This time of the year that changes fast in the winter the sand will be much much firmer and not bottomless like the dealt with on day one. Day two you can see the moisture in the sand as the tires dig in. It has to be dry and bottomless to be the same as their first day.

Relieved to see the wrecker cruise up out of the canyon. It would be interesting to see the other three guys with their rigs, since the Bronco was able to cruise up in one shot. Maybe there is a sweet spot in configuration/horsepower that works well in that extreme sand environment and it seems like it would be valuable to understand that. Besides that, it would be fun to see another mini-wrecker competition and see who really can do the job the best.

The 8.1l does have a decent amount of torque. With sand I always see you need more top end power than the low end torque. I own an 8.1l and have done a ton of research. I really suggest a raylar intake. The stock one is very restricting for top end flow. If you haven't had it tuned with the torque management removed that will help too. They detuned to save the trannys. Black bear would be my suggestion for tuning. Having more power in your power band should help having to shift gears climbing a sand hill. Would be cool to see tire deflation weight per square inch test prior to the sand shoot challenge.

But Rory has a powerful tool in the land anchor he built, would probably only take one try, maybe two and winch out if necessary. I have seen people use land anchors in mud in a four wheel drive race of several hundred mile challenge.

I worked many years in Africa in the Sahara Desert. The Best Time to drive in the sand is around 4 AM after the sand has cooled down and is more compact. Once the Sun comes up and heats the sand, it is a whole different terrain. Running in 2 Wheel Drive sometimes works to if you can maintain a good speed. The Front Wheels act as a Packer. But once again, the sand has to be cool.

The value of preparing for the unforeseen! When we went hiking in the mountains we always took what we needed plus 3 days worth of emergency food. Fill up water bottles at every opportunity. Three days is usually enough time for somebody to notice you are missing and to find you (not if you crash a plane in the Andes in the snow - that took about 3 months!).

A big part of the reason the Bronco did so well, is the modern automatic transmissions Ford uses have so many gear ratios, that are much closer together than anything GM had for a lot of years. They also shift significantly faster. The bronco is able to keep the rpms up higher and be in the optimal power range better than many other rigs today. Very impressive!

Great video as always. I'm quite sure we'd all like to see part 3 of this epic story coming to a screen near you. Also, I'm from Calgary Albert's Canada and we were traveling from Zion to Kanab on Labour day Monday. I took a chance and stopped in to Matt's yard. Matt's son was there minding the store (I picked up some T shirts) and we chatted for a short while. My timing couldn't have been better as Matt returned from a job with the wrecker. Even though I'm shure he would have preferred to go straight to lunch he opened the gate and spent some time showing us around and talking about the equipment and the channel. Also met Ed and Jamie when she arrived a short time later to go for that lunch. I can tell you that on his channel Matt comes across as a really nice, down to earth and caring guy and that's exactly who he is. Thanks so much for taking the time, it's much appreciated.

Hello Matt, just watching your videos on the sand trap show instantly took me to the Sherp videos of the ultimate off-road vehicle, where its tires can air down when needed and you don't need to get out and lock in for 4 x4😊. Everywhere you guy's went with the recovery vehicle's the Sherp can do and plenty of room to sit or just take your equipment. Granted it doesn't have the power of the tow truck, yet the off-road capacitys are endless.

As someone that specializes in getting +10k lbs machinery stuck off road, i can say i did not find a single fault with your thought process. You knew you had o test the wrecker on the hardest part of your job and when it didn’t succeed you developed a game plan to change things in the future. Good choice in simplifying your machine btw. But these last 2 vids were my favorite because it involved real problem solving and hard work to accomplish your task. Gave me ptsd flashbacks to carrying a 50lb winch hook and 3/4 inch cable 400 yds through the Florida swamp to hook on to my tractor. A And yes absolutely let your friends at the hill and yes they will absolutely get stuck especially the tracked jeep with throw a track and it will be very bad, but they have to learn somehow haha!

Every patron of the channel should be happy that Matt is not a pilot. He is willing to take on a challenge with equipment in poor condition (no lockers)(dead batteries) (short on fuel) short on coolant, both human and mechanical. We call that a CLUSTER *%^#$ designed by a KNUCKLE HEAD. Good job Bronco!

What impresses me the most about Matt is how cheerful he always comes across even when the chips are down. It looks like lockers and 5 psi were the secret on the wrecker. Now we need a Lizzy reaction video watching the highlights of this adventure.

Honestly, this makes y'all look better. Humility is important. Failure is good. No doubt y'all learned some things and it shows that sometimes, things don't work out. I appreciate seeing the failures, as well as the successes.

I really loved when Matt said and I paraphrase that "the banana has more power than the Morvair even though the Morvair has an LS". Those straight 6s make great torque at low and mid RPM ranges they start to fall off at hi RPM making them more well suited to off road, V8s make more HP and torque at the HI RPM ranges, producing wheel spin. That was my fathers off road advice to me 40 some years ago. As you can tell I am a huge fan of Jeep 4.0 L its a rock solid tractor motor second only to the Ford Big Six.

That scuz that you're seeing in the cooling system might be a reaction with the Dexcool that that engine was likely running in it's original chassis. Dexcool turns into that brown sludgy residue when it's mixed with traditional glycol based coolants. It wouldn't hurt to fully flush and clean out the wrecker's cooling system.

We came to Utah to visit Zion and just had to stop at the shop while driving through Hurricane. To my delight we saw the entire fleet including the Wrecker right after this video was released. Zack gave us a tour of the yard and represented the company very well. I also think he want to drive the Morvair.

MATT I HOPE YOU SEE THIS!! You should really take those headers off, get them heat protect coated(painted). It will help and its not that expensive, better than wrapping them. You could wrap them as well but with wraps you're vulnerable to moisture getting trapped in between the wrap and exhaust and end up with rust. So id start with painting them and get a good heat shield made. Also get some heat wraps for all the wires and plumbing that gets too hot from the headers

Thank you for sharing the experience! Guess it is time to change out the right front tire on the wrecker and keep the one on it as a spare. Also want to throw in that you are correct in that the only way to learn, is to do. I think it would make great content to have Rory, Paul, and Casey out there. Once the tire is replaced and the lockers repaired, should also try the wrecker from the bottom one more time. I know you said the mid-way is the perfect staging area for it, but I know deep down inside, you want to see it make the whole climb 😂😂

Y'all's international wrecker is badass. With those 9 to axles it's probably hard to get the wheels spinning fast enough. I bet it would pull just about anything you put behind it though. Really impressed it made it out of there on its own. One hell of a truck. I love off-roading and would love to own my own recovery service one day.

When I was a young guy, we would go to the beach and there would be all kinds of big trucks with big mud tires like you have on your vehicles and they would be stuck in the sand . They would pay us to pull them out. You aren't going to believe this but here is what we used, it was a Jeep Wagoneer which had constant four wheel drive and had this little knob in the glovebox which connected the front axel to the rear axel and it had Michelin Street Tires. You could go anywhere in sand without getting stuck.
